Upendra Bharti | HENB | New Delhi | March 13, 2026:: The UK chapter of Overseas Friends of BJP UK has urged authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and stronger security measures for Hindu cultural gatherings after a disturbance disrupted a Holi celebration in Harrow earlier this month.
In a letter addressed to the High Commission of India in London, the organisation expressed serious concern over the incident that occurred during a Holika Dahan celebration on 3 March 2026 in Harrow, north-west London. The event, held as part of the Hindu festival of Holi, reportedly witnessed clashes between a group of Muslim youths and members of the Hindu community after music at the celebration was forcibly stopped.
Highlighting the gravity of the disturbance, Overseas Friends of BJP UK called for appropriate diplomatic engagement to ensure a comprehensive investigation and accountability for those responsible. The organisation also appealed for stronger protection for religious and cultural events organised by the Indian diaspora in the United Kingdom.
“We also request that the broader issue of security for Hindu temples, religious gatherings and community institutions in the United Kingdom be discussed with the UK Government,” the letter stated.
According to the organisation, while security support has been extended to some religious institutions, many members of the Hindu community believe that comparable protection and funding for Hindu temples and community organisations facing hate incidents remains limited. The matter has become particularly sensitive following earlier communal tensions involving Hindu communities in parts of the Midlands and in the city of Leicester.
The group further suggested that the Indian High Commission could engage with local Indian residents, businesses and community organisations in Harrow to help restore confidence after the incident.
The Holika Dahan event was organised by the International Siddhashram Shakti Centre at the Harrow Civic Centre car park and was attended by nearly 1,000 people, including local mayors and councillors.
The programme began around 7 pm with traditional prayers and the ceremonial lighting of the Holika fire, symbolising the triumph of good over evil. However, the atmosphere reportedly turned tense later in the evening.
According to the centre’s founder, Shri Rajrajeshwar Guruji, three teenagers arrived at the venue around 8:30 pm and allegedly pulled out wires from the sound system, damaging the speakers and disrupting the music.
Minutes later, the youths reportedly returned with a group of 15–20 individuals, some wearing balaclavas. One of them was allegedly carrying a sword. The group is said to have thrown beer cans and glass bottles into the Holika fire and clashed with security personnel before fleeing the scene when police sirens were heard.
The Insight UK described the incident as, “Muslim youth attack Holi celebrations in Harrow.”

According to Daily Haunt, ” On 3rd March (Tuesday) evening, a group of young Muslim men who reportedly came from a nearby mosque created unrest in the former Harrow Civic Centre parking lot in London, obstructing a Holi festival that was attended by hundreds of Hindus. The video of the incident has gone viral on social media. The authorities have apprehended a 14-year-old regarding the attack on Hindus.”
However, the Harrow Online reports: “A 14-year-old boy has been arrested after a disturbance during Holi celebrations at the former Harrow Civic Centre. Police say racial slurs were made towards the Black community, but confirmed the incident was not linked to the Holi event and was not targeted at Hindu or Muslim communities.”
Despite the incident, Overseas Friends of BJP UK emphasised its willingness to work with the Indian High Commission and diaspora organisations to promote dialogue and peace-building initiatives.

“Overseas Friends of BJP UK stands ready to work with the High Commission and diaspora organisations to facilitate peace meetings, dialogue and constructive community engagement to ensure lasting safety and harmony for the Indian diaspora in the United Kingdom,” the letter said.
The organisation added that its collective objective is to ensure that cultural celebrations such as Holi continue to be observed peacefully, allowing the Indian diaspora in the UK to feel secure, respected and confident in practising its traditions.
Concerns have been raised in recent years about rising communal tensions involving sections of radical Islamist groups in the United Kingdom. The violence that erupted in Leicester in 2022, where clashes targeted members of the Hindu community, had already drawn international attention. The recent disruption of Holi celebrations in Harrow has once again highlighted these anxieties among sections of the Indian diaspora. Critics argue that attempts by extremist elements to assert Islamic dominance in certain neighbourhoods—sometimes described as “no-go zones” for non-Muslims—and to promote practices such as the enforcement of Sharia and Halal norms have contributed to social friction in what has historically been a Christian-majority country. Community observers also allege that some Islamic institutions and networks have played a role in shaping this Jihadi atmosphere of affected areas, raising questions about oversight and governance under the administration of London Mayor Sadiq Khan.
