Upendra Bharti | HENB | Lucknow | March 17, 2026:: A Hindutva leader, Prashant Mishra—popularly known as “Chota Yogi” or “Yogi Junior”—has sparked controversy after allegedly making inflammatory remarks in a viral video, in which he threatens violence against individuals involved in cow slaughter and calls for hoisting a saffron flag atop a mosque.
According to available reports, the video, purportedly recorded in the vicinity of Ghaziabad, shows Mishra declaring: “I will kill cow slaughterers; I will climb atop a nearby mosque and hoist the saffron flag.” The authenticity and exact timing of the video have not yet been independently verified by authorities.
The remarks have triggered widespread concern among critics and civil society groups, who argue that such statements directly challenge the state’s law-and-order framework and risk exacerbating communal tensions. Observers have also raised questions regarding the response—or lack thereof—from the Uttar Pradesh police, with some alleging leniency toward individuals making incendiary public statements.
Cow protection remains a highly sensitive and politically charged issue in India, often intersecting with religious identity and legal enforcement. Mishra’s statements appear to go beyond rhetorical advocacy, as they invoke stronger intent and symbolically charged actions involving religious sites. His reference to “kar seva”—a term historically associated with religious mobilization, particularly in disputed site movements—has further intensified concerns about potential communal implications.
Analysts note that such pronouncements emerge within a broader socio-political context marked by the rising prominence of Hindutva ideology, often framed by its proponents as a movement to protect “Sanatan” (traditional Hindu) values and sentiments. However, critics argue that rhetoric of this nature risks deepening societal divisions and undermining constitutional principles of secularism and public order.
As of now, there has been no official statement from law enforcement authorities regarding any action taken in response to the video. The incident continues to draw attention, with calls for a thorough investigation and appropriate legal measures to address potentially ‘inflammatory’ speech.
Cow slaughter is fully or partially prohibited in several Indian states, including Uttar Pradesh, under varying legal frameworks. Islamic violations of these laws—whether alleged or confirmed—have periodically led to local tensions, particularly when they intersect with religious sensitivities surrounding the cow, which is revered by many Hindus. Disputes over enforcement, illegal slaughter, and perceived provocation have, in some instances, contributed to communal friction, prompting calls for stricter regulation and more consistent law enforcement to maintain public order.
In a related development, Swami Avimukteshwarananda Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath (Badrikashram), has initiated a movement in Uttar Pradesh advocating for the declaration of the cow as “Rashtra Mata” (Mother of the Nation) as part of his ongoing Go-Pratistha Yatra. He has also announced a subsequent 81-day Abhiyan, titled the “Kavishti Yatra,” scheduled to begin on May 3, which aims to raise awareness about cow protection and mobilize public support across approximately 1.08 lakh villages in the state. The Shankaracharya has issued a 40-day ultimatum to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to declare the cow as the “Mother of the State,” warning of public criticism if the demand is not fulfilled. He has further called upon supporters to participate in programmes in Lucknow, positioning cow protection as a significant socio-political issue. As the deadline approaches, attention remains on the state government’s response and the potential political implications of the campaign.
