India Urges Focus on Hindu Temple Attacks in U.S., Rejects USCIRF Report as ‘Distorted and Selective’.

MEA Pushes Back at U.S. Religious Freedom Report, Calls for Focus on Attacks Against Hindu Temples.

Upananda Brahmachari | HENB | New Delhi | March 18, 2026:: India has strongly rejected the latest report by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), accusing the body of presenting a “distorted and selective picture” of the country while overlooking incidents of religious intolerance in the United States, particularly attacks on Hindu temples.

Responding to the report on Monday (March 16, 2026), Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal criticized the Commission for relying on what he described as “questionable sources” and “ideological narratives” rather than objective assessments. He argued that such portrayals not only misrepresent India’s record on religious freedom but also undermine the credibility of the USCIRF itself.

“For several years now, the USCIRF has persisted in presenting a distorted and selective picture of India,” Mr. Jaiswal said. “Such repeated misrepresentations only weaken the institution’s standing.”

The USCIRF’s latest report had recommended “targeted sanctions” against India’s external intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), as well as the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The Commission alleged their involvement in or tolerance of violations of religious freedom and called for measures such as asset freezes and travel bans against associated individuals and entities.

India, however, dismissed these recommendations as unfounded and politically motivated. In a pointed response, the MEA urged the Commission to broaden its focus and take note of religious intolerance beyond India’s borders. Specifically, officials highlighted incidents of vandalism and defacement targeting Hindu temples in the United States—episodes that have raised concerns within the Indian diaspora.

Over the past few years, several Hindu temples across the U.S. have reported acts of vandalism, including graffiti with anti-India or anti-Hindu messages. While investigations by local authorities have been ongoing, community leaders have repeatedly called for stronger recognition of these incidents as hate crimes and for greater institutional attention to the issue.

The MEA’s remarks come at a time when discussions around religious freedom are increasingly intersecting with geopolitical considerations. Analysts note that reports such as those issued by the USCIRF, while influential in shaping policy debates in Washington, have often been contested by countries that view them as intrusive or lacking contextual balance.

At the same time, advocacy groups in the United States maintain that independent monitoring bodies play a crucial role in highlighting rights violations globally. The USCIRF, a bipartisan federal commission, has consistently defended its methodology, stating that its findings are based on extensive research, expert testimony, and field reports.

The diplomatic exchange also reflects broader tensions in how religious freedom is defined, assessed, and politicized across international contexts. While India emphasizes its pluralistic traditions and constitutional protections, critics—both domestic and international—have raised concerns about the treatment of minority communities.

Against this backdrop, the MEA’s call to address attacks on Hindu temples in the United States adds a new dimension to the conversation, shifting attention toward challenges faced by minority religious communities within Western democracies. Observers suggest that a more balanced global discourse on religious freedom would require acknowledging violations across all regions, rather than focusing selectively on specific countries.

As the debate continues, the issue underscores the complexity of navigating religious rights in an interconnected world, where domestic developments and international scrutiny are increasingly intertwined.
