Protests at the University of Jammu over Jinnah Chapter in the Syllabus.

ABVP Protests at Jammu University; Debate Intensifies over Jinnah’s Representation in Curriculum.

Upananda Brahmachari | HENB | New Delhi | March 22, 2026:: Protests erupted at the University of Jammu after the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a student organization affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), objected to the inclusion of a chapter on Muhammad Ali Jinnah in the postgraduate political science syllabus. The development has triggered a wider debate over historical interpretation, academic autonomy, and ideological influence in education.

According to reports, ABVP activists gathered on campus under the leadership of Jammu and Kashmir Secretary Sannak Shrivats, raising slogans against the university administration and demanding the immediate removal of the chapter. The contested content is part of the module “Modern Indian Political Thought” under the paper “Minorities and the Nation.” Protesters also tore posters depicting Jinnah and warned that their agitation would intensify if the demand was not met.

Critique of Historical Narratives

During the protest, ABVP representatives advanced a broader critique of prevailing historiography in India. They argued that what they described as a “leftist school of historians” has disproportionately emphasized the contributions of Mughal rulers and certain Islamic figures while, in their view, underrepresenting or diminishing the role of Hindu historical figures. According to the protesters, this perceived imbalance has led to calls for a re-evaluation and rewriting of Indian history to better reflect what they consider indigenous perspectives.

Focus on Jinnah’s Historical Role

A central point of contention remains the portrayal of Muhammad Ali Jinnah. ABVP leaders argued that Jinnah’s political legacy cannot be separated from the events leading up to Partition in 1947. In particular, they referenced the Direct Action Day of August 16, 1946, which was called by the All-India Muslim League under Jinnah’s leadership. The day witnessed large-scale communal violence, especially in Calcutta, resulting in significant casualties and long-term social repercussions.

Protest leaders contended that such events make Jinnah a deeply polarizing figure and questioned his inclusion in a module that examines minority representation. They also reiterated objections to presenting figures like Jinnah and Sir Syed Ahmed Khan as representative voices of minority communities within an academic framework.

Demand for Institutional Review

The ABVP has urged the University Grants Commission (UGC) to review the matter in line with its concerns. Protesters maintained that academic content should be sensitive to what they termed “national sentiments” and argued that figures they view as divisive or communal should not be accorded prominence in university curricula.

University’s Response

The University of Jammu, however, has defended its syllabus. Baljit Singh Mann, Head of the Political Science Department, stated that the inclusion of Jinnah and other historical thinkers is guided by academic considerations and aligns with UGC norms. He emphasized that universities across India include diverse political figures in their curricula to enable critical analysis and comprehensive understanding.

Wider Debate on Education and Ideology

The controversy has reignited a broader national conversation about the intersection of education and ideology. While some support calls for revisiting historical narratives, others caution that academic spaces must remain committed to critical inquiry, multiple perspectives, and scholarly rigor.

As tensions persist, the issue underscores the ongoing challenge of balancing historical interpretation, academic freedom, and public sentiment within India’s higher education system.
