Hridya R | HENB | Thiruvananthapuram | April 4, 2026:: : Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje has stirred controversy by alleging that Kerala is facing multiple forms of what she described as “jihads,” including “love jihad,” “business jihad,” and “land jihad.” Her remarks, made during a recent political address, have intensified debate over governance, social dynamics, and development in the state.
Karandlaje claimed that Kerala’s socio-economic landscape has been adversely affected by alternating administrations led by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF). According to her, the state is witnessing a steady outflow of youth seeking better opportunities in education and employment outside Kerala. She further alleged that sections of Hindu and Christian communities are leaving the state out of fear, although she did not present data to substantiate these claims.
Highlighting economic concerns, the Union Minister argued that Kerala requires substantial structural reforms to unlock its development potential. She emphasized the need for increased industrial investment and more effective utilization of natural resources, particularly in sectors such as marine products and agriculture. Karandlaje asserted that fishermen and farmers should be direct beneficiaries of economic policies, accusing both the ruling and opposition fronts of prioritizing corruption over public welfare.
Positioning the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as a viable alternative, she claimed that governance under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership would enhance both development and security in Kerala. She also criticized what she described as political inconsistencies among national alliances, alleging that parties that oppose each other at the national level often engage in coordinated political strategies within the state.
Addressing concerns over the Foreign Contribution Regulation framework, Karandlaje defended its provisions, stating that actions are taken only against illegal foreign funding. She dismissed objections raised by minority groups and non-governmental organizations as unfounded, maintaining that legitimate entities would not face undue restrictions.
Echoing similar concerns, former Director General of Police (DGP) and NDA leader R. Sreelekha criticized the state government’s handling of law and order, particularly regarding crimes against women. She alleged that incidents of such crimes have increased significantly in recent years and accused authorities of failing to act decisively, even in serious cases.
Sreelekha, who is contesting from the Vattiyoorkavu constituency, stated that improving women’s safety would be a central focus of her agenda if elected. She argued that systemic changes, including stronger safety mechanisms and more responsive governance, are necessary to address the challenges facing the state.
The statements by Karandlaje and Sreelekha have drawn attention across political and civil society circles, with critics demanding evidence for the claims and calling for a more data-driven discourse. As Kerala continues to navigate complex social and economic issues, the remarks are likely to remain a focal point in the state’s evolving political landscape.
