Pawar’s ‘Radicalisation’ Remark on Warkari Sect Sparks Political Storm; Hindutva Leaders Hit Back.
Upananda Brahmachari | HENB | New Delhi | April 12, 2026:: A fresh political controversy has erupted after Sharad Pawar, chief of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) and a Rajya Sabha MP, raised concerns about what he termed the “growing influence of radical elements” within the centuries-old Warkari tradition of Maharashtra.
Pawar Flags ‘Worrying Shift’ in Warkari Movement
Speaking through a souvenir published for the All-India Marathi Literary Conference of Women Government Officers held in New Delhi on April 11–12, Pawar warned that a movement historically known for equality and inclusiveness is witnessing a shift.
The Warkari sect, devoted to Lord Vitthal—a form of Vishnu/Krishna/Hari—is rooted in the pilgrimage town of Pandharpur and is widely regarded for its emphasis on devotion, social equality, and simple living.
Pawar claimed that nearly 60% of individuals associated with Warkari kirtans and preaching networks are aligning in ways that could empower “radical forces,” while only about 40% continue to uphold the sect’s traditional egalitarian ethos. He described the trend as “worrying” for a movement that has historically guided society through spiritual and moral teachings.
But the Warkari leaders labelled Sharad Pawar’s claims as ‘absurd’ and ‘politically motivated’.
Strong Pushback from Hindutva Leaders
Pawar’s remarks triggered sharp reactions from leaders aligned with Hindutva ideology.
Tushar Bhosale, associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party, accused Pawar of being “anti-Hindu” and said his comments insulted the Warkari tradition. The National Warkari Council also condemned the statement, calling it baseless and divisive.
Maharashtra Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat of the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) rejected the allegations outright. He emphasized that the Warkari sect has historically included followers from all castes and communities, and warned against attempts to “divide Hindu society.”
Support from Opposition Camp
However, Pawar found support within sections of the opposition.
Ambadas Danve of the Shiv Sena (UBT faction) backed Pawar, stating that there was nothing objectionable in his remarks. Danve went further, alleging that several Warkari preachers are “on the BJP’s payroll,” hinting at political influence within the religious network.
Political Undercurrents and Recent Alignments
Political observers note that the Warkari sect has, in recent years, appeared closer to the ruling establishment in Maharashtra. The sect’s participation in initiatives like the RSS-backed “Jagte Raho” campaign—aimed at promoting Hindu unity—has drawn attention.
The Mahayuti government led by Eknath Shinde has also taken steps seen as outreach to the Warkari community. These include the formation of a Chief Minister’s Warkari Sect Board, allocation of ₹50 crore in funding, and the introduction of a pension scheme for senior citizens participating in the Pandharpur Wari pilgrimage. Analysts believe such measures may have contributed to the alliance’s electoral gains in the state.
Concerns Over Women’s Role
Beyond ideological concerns, Pawar also highlighted gender-related issues within the movement. He pointed out that women remain underrepresented in the knowledge traditions of the sect and expressed concern over the increasing instances of derogatory remarks about women during gatherings.
He further warned that a rise in hardline views among some women kirtankars could signal a troubling shift in discourse within the community.
Critics See Political Frustration
Critics of Pawar have dismissed his comments as politically motivated, suggesting they reflect frustration over diminishing influence of his party within Warkari organisations. According to this view, the controversy is less about ideological change and more about shifting political alignments in Maharashtra’s influential socio-religious networks.
Ugly Political Intension
The controversy surrounding Sharad Pawar’s remarks has once again highlighted the complex intersection of religion, politics, and social reform in Maharashtra. While concerns over ideological shifts within traditional movements have sparked debate, the sharp political reactions underscore how deeply intertwined such religious institutions have become with contemporary electoral and ideological battles.
Such unnecessary tendencies of political forces to assert control over religious domains for party consolidation and electoral mileage represent a deeply concerning trend, and are detrimental to the health of Indian politics.
