‘Kumbh Mela’ the greatest show on Earth, says a study

Kumbha Hindu ExistenceLondon | Tue, 18 Dec 2012 | By PTI :: The Kumbh Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, to be held at Sangam in Allahabad early next year has been described as the “greatest show on Earth” in a four-year study by British and Indian researchers.

Up to 100 million people will gather on the shores of the Ganges to celebrate the Hindu festival commencing on January 14, 2013. For four years the team of British and Indian researchers have been studying the event, seeking to understand how people treat each other, how they experience the crowd and what impact the crowd has on their everyday lives.

They will present their findings at a special event at Allahabad University on January 24, 2013. The study described the Kumbh Mela as an incredible event and the “greatest show on Earth”.

The Kumbh Mela attracts worldwide attention as a remarkable spectacle: millions of pilgrims bathing in the Ganges, parades of gurus on thrones, flanked by naked Naga Sadhus smeared in ash.

This research, led by Nick Hopkins at the University of Dundee, Prof Stephen Reicher at the University of St Andrews, and Prof Narayanan Srinivasan at the University of Allahabad shows it to be remarkable in other ways as well.

How is it that a vast city of strangers emerges from nothing every year, and yet it functions harmoniously? How is it that people thrive in an environment that is densely crowded, intensely noisy and often insanitary?

The event in Allahabad will provide the answers to these and other questions about the Mela. It will also provide insights that are relevant, not only to the Mela, but go to the heart of processes that make human social life possible, which create (or undermine) social cohesion and which shape our sense of well being. ‘Sometimes we look at the Mela as an exotic event and focus on how different the pilgrims are from us. Our work shows how the pilgrim experience has lessons for all of us about how to create a good community and to ensure that people thrive in the community,’ Hopkins said. ‘By all the tenets of conventional wisdom, the Mela shouldn’t work. It is crowded, noisy and unsanitary.

One might expect people to be stressed, quarrelsome and conflictual. Yet the event is harmonious and people are serene. Studying the Mela has forced us to reconsider many basic beliefs about how people function in society,’ Reicher said. Narayanan said, ‘This has been the largest ever social science collaboration between the UK and India and possibly the most successful. The event in Allahabad will be very exciting. It will reveal findings that are sure to surprise people. It will change their understanding of crowds and communities.’

Hindu Existence  Post Script:

The Kumbh Mela

Kumbh Mela is a mass Hindu pilgrimage in which Hindus gather at the Ganges, river Godavari and river Shipra, where bathing for purification from sin is considered especially efficacious.

Mainly, the Ardh (half) Kumbh Mela is celebrated every six years at Haridwar and Allahabad, the Purna (complete) Kumbh takes place every twelve years, at four places Allahabad, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. The Maha(great) Kumbh Mela which comes after 12 ‘Purna Kumbh Melas’, or 144 years, is held at Allahabad.

Five Types of Kumbh Melas • Maha Kumbh Mela – occurring every 144 years – only in Allahabad. • Purna Kumbh Mela – after every 12 years – last one took place in January 2001 in Allahabad. • Ardh Kumbh – 6th year after Kumbh Mela. • Kumbh Mela – every 3rd years, rotating through Prayag, Nasik, Haridwar and Ujjain. • Magh Mela – Annual, held every year except years of Kumbh Mela and Ardh Kumbh Mela Held in Magh (Jan-Feb); hence the name. Only in Allahabad.

According to the Mela Administration’s estimates, around 70 million people participated in the 45-day Ardh Kumbh Mela in Allahabad, in 2007.

The previous Kumbh Mela, held in 2010 in Haridwar, was, before it occurred, estimated by the authorities to attract between 30 and 70 million people. Coming Ardha Kumbh Mela will start on 14-January-2013 at Allahabad.

Most Significant Days During The Kumbh Mela

Makar Sankranti  (14th January 2013 Sunday) - Shahi Snan

Kumbh-the greatest show on earthA Holy bath during this period carries special significance. Those who take a holy bath in the rivers Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri acquire pious credits . Ganga is considered as the river of heaven. This river came to earth by the religious austerity of Bhagirath and river had conjunction with ocean for the reclamation of ocean. The day Ganga dissolved in ocean was the day of Makar Sankranti. Hence, the virtue of bathing in Ganga today is much more than any other day. In Kolkata, lakhs of devotees come to take bath in Ganga sagar. In Allahabad as well, great masses come for bathing and doing charity on the banks of Sangam. One month of Kalpvas(kumbh mela) is also started in Allahabad from the day of Makar Sankranti, which is been followed since the era of Ramayana.

Paush Purnima (27 January 2013 Sunday)

The day occurs when the moon is full in the Hindu month of Paush. This is the last full moon of winter. By this time, the sadhu and hundreds of thousands of pilgrims arrive at the Kumbh Mela. On the day of Paush Purnima, devotees take baths in various sacred rivers like Ganga and Yamuna. People take baths at various places including Haridwar and relieve themselves of all their sins and problems. Taking baths, donations, charities etc are considered very sacred on this day. The baths of Magh month start with Paush Purnima and hence, this day is considered very important. It is believed that all wishes come true on this day.

Ekadashi Snan (6 February 2013)

Ekadashi, Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month  Magha, 2069 Vikram Samvat. At times Ekadashi fasting is suggested on two consecutive days. It is advised that Smartha with family should observe fasting on first day only. The alternate Ekadashi fasting, which is the second one, is suggested for Sanyasis, widows and for those who want Moksha. When alternate Ekadashi fasting is suggested for Smartha it coincides with Vaishnava Ekadashi fasting day. Ekadashi fasting on both days is suggested for staunch devotees who seek for love and affection of Lord Vishnu.

Mauni Amavasya Snan (10 February 2013 Sunday) - Shahi Snan

For the holy men and women, this is the main bathing day. New members to various holy monastic orders receive their first initiation on this day. The Amavasya of Magh Masa is called the Mauni Amavasya. Sun and Moon enter and the Capricorn sign, because of the transit, on this day. This day is celebrated as the birthday of Manu Rishi. It is believed, Lord Brahma gave origination to Maharaja Manu and queen Shatrupa. Hence, this day is considered as the beginning of the universe creation. Capricorn sign has the Yoga of Sun and Moon which increases the significance of this Amavasya. Bathing in Sangam of Allahabad, gives virtues to an individual, on this day. According to some scholar, Maun Vrat should be observed. Maun (silent) Vrat means to control all our senses. It depends on a person for how long he wants to observe silence. People take the resolution of Maun Vrat for a day, or a month, or for one year.

Basant Panchami Snan (14 February 2013 Thursday) - Shahi Snan

This is the fifth day of the luminous half of the lunar month and is the beginning of spring in North India. Vasant Panchami day is dedicated to Goddess of learning Maa Saraswati, the source of knowledge, enlightment, music, arts, science and culture.  Goddess Saraswati is worshipped on Vasant Panchami day. Vasant Panchami is also known as Shri Panchami and Saraswati Panchami.

Rath Saptami Snan (17 February 2013 Sunday)

Rath Saptami festival is observed on the seventh day of Shukla Paksha in the Magh Month (January – February) in the traditional Hindu calendar.

Bhishma Ekadasi Snan ( 21 February 2013 Thursday)

On this day, Bhishma Pithamaha, the oldest, wisest, most powerful and most righteous person belonging to the Kuru dynasty (approx. over 5000 years ago), narrated the greatness of Lord Krishna through Sri Vishnu Sahasranama to Yudhishtira, the eldest brother of Pandavas.

Maghi Purnima Snan (25 February 2013 Monday) Magh Purnima or Magha Pournami, also known as Maha Maghi, is one of the auspicious Pournami days for Hindu devotees. Purnima is considered as significant in terms of spiritual practice and performing religious rituals.Samudra Snan or Punya Nadi Snanan (holy dip in holy waters) on Maha Maghi is highly meritorious deed. It is auspicious for Snana, Daana, Japa, and Parayana.

And at last Mahashivratri Snan on 10 Mar 2013 Wednesday.

Ayodhya: Twenty years on, a refusal to see the truth of Ramjanmabhumi.

Ramjanmabhumi: Twenty years on, a refusal to see the truth

- Dr. Subramanian Swamy

Swamy on Janmabhoomi1 DEC 2012  | New Delhi  | Daily Pioneer ::  The pseudo-secular narrative has triumphed on the Ram Janmabhoomi struggle which climaxed twenty years ago on December 6. The tragedy is that all the blood and gore could have been avoided through a negotiated settlement

On December 6, 1992, a superstructure called the Babri Masjid standing in the city of Ayodhya, came crashing down. It remains even today a traumatic event for the nation, because modern Indians have not yet been weaned on a true history of India, and hence a large section of our educated classes still view the destruction of the structure as criminal vandalism. What happened exactly? There was a superstructure built on the site of an ancient temple after demolishing it. That was the real vandalism.

Two years earlier, by a coincidence, on the same month and day, I had met representatives of the VHP and BJP at a house, next door to mine, on Mathura Road. The newly sworn in Prime Minister, the late Chandrashekhar, had asked me (I was then his newly sworn in senior most Cabinet Minister) that as the new Union Law& Justice Minister, I should talk to them about withdrawing their proposed nation-wide stir slated to begin on December 9, 1991 for building a Ram temple at the site the super-structure had then stood in its gloomy glory. He told me to assure the VHP that our government would get removed the Babri Masjid with the consent of Muslim leaders through discussions.

The VHP and BJP leaders I met readily agreed to call off the stir since we were a new government. Their decision to go on a stir was taken when VP Singh was in power – his government fell in November. Thereafter, in January 1991, talks initiated by Chandrashekhar himself began with the Muslim leaders. Unfortunately, despite the zig-zag progress in the talks, our government did not last long enough to fructify it. Had history taken a different turn and our government lasted for a year more, I am confident we would have amicably liberated the Ranjanmabhoomi for building a befitting Ram temple, that too with the consent of the Muslim community, even though the Government was in the minority in the Parliament.

From my personal experience as a Minister in a minority government, I can therefore say that lack of majority is no excuse for implementing any agenda, if the leadership had the mindset to get things done. As a Minister of Law &Justice, for instance, I got the controversial Sessions Judge of Faizabad, KM Pandey, a High Court judgeship, despite the fact that the previous V.P. Singh’s “three-legged” government had issued orders on file that since Pandey had directed the locks on the so-called Babri Masjid be removed in 1986, he should never be made a High Court judge.

Mulayam Singh was our Chief Minister of UP, but with firmness I got his protests sufficiently moderated to his permit me to go ahead. He cooperated because he knew I would do it anyway– make Pandey a judge of the High Court-and hence he acquiesced since he wanted other things done for him by me,. The same clarity enabled the Chandrashekhar government to get Saifuddin Soz’s kidnapped daughter freed without releasing any dreaded terrorists. There are methods for doing that-mostly based on retaliation. In each case it is the mindset of those elected to high office that matters, not the size of the parliamentary majority or lack of it.

It was this mindset that enabled the Chandrashekhar government to nearly solve by an agreement the question of building of a Ram temple in Ayodhya. However, the government however fell before it could be clinched. But could the Babri Masjid have been demolished in a more legally authorised way? Hindus should not be defensive in the face of an onslaught by the fashionable secularists about removing mosques built on where temples had once stood, because the Supreme Court has held in the Faruqui vs. Union of India case [(1994)6 SCC360], that a masjid is not an essential part of Islamic theology, and these can and have been be demolished for public good.

Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and even in British-ruled undivided India, Masjids have been demolished to facilitate roads. The government of Saudi Arabia did not think twice before demolishing the Bilal Masjid in Mecca where Prophet Muhammed used to read namaz. A masjid, like a church, is not a religious place in the sense a temple is. Masjids and Churches are places for worship, i.e., buildings which serve as facilitation centres for namaz and prayer. Namaz can be read anywhere even on a railway platform. In the United States, the VHP buys disused Churches and converts them into temples, and yet no Christian there objects.

But temples, once it is shown that a prana prathista puja has been performed to build it, is where God or deity resides, and belongs to God forever. As Union Law&Justice Minister in 1991 I got our government legal team to prove this to the satisfaction of the House of Lords in Britain, to bring back a Nataraja statue taken from a disused Thanjavur temple. It was at Rajiv Gandhi’s request I took interest in the case!

Of course, because of this fact about masjids and churches, no one in a democracy has the right to take the law into his own hands to demolish them. But on the other hand, a government can remove in a legal and orderly way the masjids in Ayodhya, Kashi, and Brindavan (this mention is supposed to be Mathura as the birth place temple of Lord Krishna – Ed. HE), in fact in 300 other places, to rebuild the original temples under law. We can get Muslims to cooperate in this. I am confident of this. Babri Masjid was built as an affront to Hindus. Otherwise it could have been built anywhere else since namaz can be offered anywhere. Hindus have however prevailed because despite 800 years of Islamic and 200 years of Christian domination, Bharat today is still over 80 per cent Hindu and a continuum of an ancient civilisation. Hence, now we must resolve to rectify what is essential to rectify and reclaim. For that, the restoration of three holy sites, in Ayodhya, Vrindavan, and Kashi, is necessary. Patriotic politicians must resolve: Come our way or go the highway.

But it is easier said than done to expect that politicians would do or die for it. As our rudderless democracy has drifted, we are today in a “match-fixing mode” even in electoral contests. In Tamil Nadu, the DMK and AIADMK are bitter enemies, but in most crucial constituencies, a match-fixing arrangement for money have been worked out for decades between Sasikala of the AIADMK and Arcot Veerasamy of the DMK, who are alter egos of their respective top leaders, and determined to keep out the Hindutva forces from Tamil Nadu.

The same match-fixing disease has spread to other parties nation-wide. We have to cure it before it completely debilitates and destroys our democracy as it has done in Banana Republics of Latin American countries such as Colombia and Peru.

The reluctance today to confront and expose the anti-Hindu personages in Parliament, academia and media because of this disease of “match-fixing”. It is said that such attacks would be “personal” and “counter productive”. There is however nothing “personal” in such directed and organised attacks. Just as the world focused on Hitler or Mussolini, without thinking of it being personal, therefore we should identify and expose especially the person who today has emerged as the fountain head of the anti-Hindutva campaign.

But we cannot prevail in this struggle, if we have in our midst those suffering from the “Arjuna virus” as-the late Swami Chinmayananda once pointed out, referring to Arjuna’s initial reluctance to fight at Kurukshetra. The Babri Masjid legacy is that virus we still have to cure twenty years later.

Why Hindus are not safe in Pakistan?

BJP Demands Citizenship for People Displaced From Pak.

KHANDWA (MP) | SEP 12, 2012 | Source: Outlook India :: Condemning the alleged atrocities and forcible conversion of Hindus in Pakistan, the Madhya Pradesh BJP executive committee today adopted a resolution demanding not to send back displaced persons to the neighbouring country and allowing them to stay in India.

The resolution, moved by BJP’s Indore district unit president Shankar Lalwani after the two-day meeting of the committee ended her today, demanded granting citizenship to the displaced persons by amending rules and also that they should not be forced to go back to Pakistan where they were facing problems.

It said the attitude of Pakistan towards the minority community was not secular and incidents of kidnapping, loot, rape and forcible religious conversion were a routine feature.

In view of the above conditions, the committee adopted a resolution that the rules for granting citizenship to such persons who stayed back in Pakistan after partition should be relaxed and they should not be sent back to there, against their wishes.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has assured that nobody would be sent back to Pakistan from Madhya Pradesh and he will take up the issue with the Centre, Lalwani said.

Instead of seven-year rule for availing citizenship, such persons, especially from Pakistan, should be granted it after six-months of stay in the country, as was the case prior to 1965.

Over 10,000 such persons in Madhya Pradesh and about 35,000 in India were staying even after expiry of their visa and since they do not want to back to Pakistan, they should not be forced to go back, he stressed.

Devotees glorified Rama’s Arrows on Ramnavmi. Mosques kept covered, Muslim felons went underground during Hindu-Sikh-Jain March in Hyderabad Town.

Jai Sri Ram - Hyderabad Style! Hyderabadi Islamists will remember it forever!!

Ram devotees on. Islamists gone. Mosques kept covered, Muslim felons went underground in Hyderabad during huge Sri Ramnavmi Procession, 2012.

Make a Hindu Road Map in Hyderabad Line.

~ Upananda Brahmachari.

Bhagyanagar, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh | 1st April, 2012.

Starting from Rani Avanti Bai Community Hall, Dhulpet, the Rally took a mammoth shape of Bajrangvali gradually.

Only Hindus in such a joint combination can teach a right lesson to the Islamists allover. Mosques kept covered, Muslim felons went underground in Hyderabad when Devotees of Lord Rama flooded the roads in Ramnavami Procession 2012. Yes, the pigs can be roasted as per your dish of like.

Glorious Victory of Hindus in Bhagyanagar. It’s Hindu unity again proves its enormous strength to ‘cow down’ the ‘Islamic bull’ in Bhagyanagar , where anti Hindu Congress Party and its ally MIM took a challenge to stop the Ram Navmi Procession at any cost.

Bhagyanagar has set an example that if such rallies are organized in each state twice a month in different places with a definite Hindu Cause with the whole hearted participation of all the Hindu Wings jointly, the Islamic demon in India have to take an refuge in Pakistan or Afghanistan without any option.

Sri Ram Navami Maha Aarti at Hyderabad,  2012 .

Bhagyanagar Shri Ram Navmi Utsav Samiti along with other Hindu organizations successfully organized grand procession in the city today on 1st April Sunday at 12 PM. The Shobhayatra created history with presence of more than 1.5 lakh devout Hindus. As per Shriram Channel’s Facebook page, more than 3 lakh Hindus participated in the event.

Ye Desh Veer Jawono ka Song Sri Ram Navami 2012 Hyderabad.

Also it was slap on the face of those, who tried to brand this Shobhayatra as ‘threat to communal harmony’ as there was not even single violent or unlawful incident.

Concluding session at Hanuman Vyayam Shala, Hanuman Tekdi.

The procession has faced lot of obstacles especially from the anti-Hindu Congress Government in Andhra Pradesh and its ally a Muslim political party MIM (Majsilh e Ittehadul Muslimin) . MLA of MIM Akbaruddin Owaisa had demanded complete ban on procession taken out in the city on the occasion of ‘Shriram Navami’ and ‘Hanuman Jayanti’. Subsequently, Hindu leader Sriman Thakur Raja Singh had been arrested with fake case few days ago. The procession was expected to be grand than last year and it appeared also by the Grace of Lord Rama.

From Delhi, Maharashtra and Karnataka, several Hindu organizations took part here. Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena, Sri Ram Sene, VHP and Hindu Janajagruti Samiti were participated. Special guests were VHP’s Mr. Surendra Jainji and Sadhvi Prachi Devi. Hindu leader Shri T Raja Singh in his short speech said, “ The Congress government will never do anything for Hindus. If you want to save this country and save Hindus, then completely oust the Congress government .”

Mandir Ohi Banayege  Song at Sri Ram Navami 2012 Hyderabad.

While addressing the youth Shri Singh said, “This country’s youth have to fight and raise their voices. Each Hindu brother have to be like our national heroes Bhagat Singh and Chandrashekhar Aazad”. Compared to the last year the police didn’t force the Hindus to divert their regular route.

Ramji ki Sena Chali Song at Sri Ram Navami 2012 Hyderabad.

Like no surprise this time also the police seemed protecting Muslim Masjids (mosques) rather than lacks of Hindus participated in the procession. (One should note that Hindus had never attacked Mosques or Churches in the processions taken out on the occasion of Hindu Festivals. Such acts of Police expose their pro- Muslim stance !)

The procession began from Rani Avanti Bai Community Hall, Dhulpet and it ended in Hanuman Vyayamshala in Sultan Bazar. The speech of the guests held in Hanuman Vyayamshala at the end of the procession.

2. Groups of kids who were dressed as Shriram, Lakshman, Sita Mata, Hanuman and Vanar played various incidents in Ramayana.

3. The length of the procession was 7 kilometers.

Islamists are putting hurdles to Shri Amarnathji Yatra. Hindus will retaliate eventually.

Posted by hinduexistence on February 28, 2012

Amarnath yatra curtailed to 39 days under the pressure of Islamists.

Jammu, Feb. 26 2012 | HE Correspondent

It is not a new thing that the Pak sponsored Islamist groups and the Hurriyat Conference tie-up always put many hurdles before the Hindu pilgrimage of World famous  annual Amarnath Yatra in the recent years including blasts and attacks upon the Hindu-Sikh Pilgrimage in this occasion.

In 2008, 6 Hindus were killed and 100 injured during the 61 days agitation and hartaal in Jammu and adjacent areas for the agreement to temporary transfer 99 acres of land to the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board. Then the seperatists and the Hurriyat Conference vultures declined to hand over such lands meant for the facility for the pilgrimage. Those vultures alleged a demographic change due to the 60 days Pilgrimage coming in Kashmir for Amarnathji Yatra. Ultimately, Hindus won the war for that phase.

Now, Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB)  headed by the Jammu and Kashmir governor has cut the duration of this year’s Amarnath pilgrimage to 39 days, angering Hindutva activists in Jammu, Delhi and various parts in India. It is reported that the authority has bowed down to the pressure group of the Islamist lobby, working on a total ban on Hindu pilgrimage in Jammu and Kashmir.

A Raj Bhavan spokesperson said the yatra would start on June 25 and end on Rakhsha Bandhan or Shravan Purnima, which falls on August 2.

The Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board had curtailed the yatra from 60 days to 45 days last year, triggering fierce protests from Hindutva groups, which threatened to start an unofficial pilgrimage 15 days earlier.

The groups relented after the board promised to form a sub-committee, headed by its member Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, to fix the duration of future pilgrimages in consultation with religious heads.

The Raj Bhavan spokesperson said this year’s schedule was fixed on the recommendation of the Ravi Shankar committee, whose other members included Swami Avdeshnandji of Haridwar, Swami Gyaanandji of Vrindavan, chamber of commerce president Y.V. Sharma and other civil society members.

The board’s explanation is that the twin routes from Pahalgam and Baltal to the cave shrine become fit for movement only around June-end and that Raksha Bandhan falls on August 2 this year, against August 13 last year.

To placate potential protesters, the board has decided to arrange a special puja on Jaishtha Purnima, which falls on June 4, at the cave or some suitable location depending on the weather.

Also, if weather permits, the board may advance the yatra by a few days, the Raj Bhavan spokesperson said.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad president Rama Kant Dubey said: “We want the yatra to last two months. There will be no compromise on this.”

The board today also issued a list of dos and don’ts. They will now need a doctor’s certificate before they can undertake the arduous yatra. Cardiac arrest and accidents killed 107 pilgrims last year.

The yatra’s duration has been a subject of controversy since 2003 when then governor S.K. Sinha decided to extend it to two months despite strong opposition from chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.

Sayeed had to relent and the yatra was extended first by 15 days in 2004 and then by another 15 days two years later.

Separatist zealots  led by Hurriyat vulture  Syed Ali Shah Geelani want the yatra to be curtailed to 15 days, claiming that was the practice before 1990.

Now, the Islamic propagators of Kashmir think that the Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and others are the subject of the Muslims in J&K. Muslims are less in numbers, contributors and participators in every foot-step in the National cause as they bear the more Pan Islamist legacy than the Indian nationalism. But they are supported by the Indian Govt also very unfortunately.

In India, Hindus will decide the time frame of the Hindu pilgrimage, rituals and religious festivals. Not, the Muslims. Otherwise Hindus will be compelled to check the Muslim festivals as a stanch repercussion.     It is well known that united Hindu force successfully stopped Shariah for Hind  Project in India in recent days. Rest is bound to  happen in due time.

Hindus Existence urges all the Hindu saints and leaders in SASB and in all other forums to take hard steps to keep high the sentiment and the dignity of Hindu Pilgrimage in a land of Hindus, i.e. Bharat. Jai Hind.

INDIA TV : Thursday, 10 November, 2011 ||Nearly 1,500 Indian pilgrims arrived in Lahore on Saturday to join the birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev at Nankana Sahib.

“Some 1,500 yatris (pilgrims) have arrived in the first special train and a couple of hundred others are expected in the second train,” Fraz Abbas, Deputy Director of Pakistan’s Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB), said.

Abbas expressed satisfaction over the arrival of such a large number of Indian pilgrims in testing times.

Earlier, Pakistani authorities persuaded their Indian counterparts to allow special trains to cross the border to transport Sikhs who wished to participate in the celebrations despite the advisory against visiting Pakistan.

Abbas said the Indian Railways had on Friday refused to allow Pakistan’s special trains to go to Amritsar to transport the pilgrims.

“On the request of the Evacuee Trust Property Board, the Indian High Commission in Islamabad persuaded its government and got the issue sorted out,” he said.

ETPB Chairman Asif Hashmi and other officials greeted the pilgrims at the Wagah border.

After completing immigration procedures, the pilgrims left for Gurdwara Janamsthan at Nankana Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Nanak, where a three-day festival will begin on November 2.

Jageer Singh, a member of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee, told reporters at Wagah that he was satisfied with the security arrangements.

“Though the law and order situation in Pakistan is not ideal, we are not afraid of coming here no matter what happens because this place is very sacred for us,” he said.

The ETPB, which maintains shrines of minority communities and arranges visits by foreign pilgrims, has put in place strict security measures in the wake of a series of terrorist attacks across Pakistan.

Pakistan Rangers have been deployed for the security of the pilgrims.

Senior officials of the Indian High Commission have also been sent to Lahore to oversee arrangements for the pilgrims.

The Indian government had on Tuesday advised pilgrims against visiting Pakistan in view of the deteriorating security situation.

“The government of India is of the view that it is not advisable for Indian pilgrims to visit Pakistan in the prevailing situation when frequent terrorist attacks are taking place in Punjab province… where all gurdwaras are situated,” said a statement from the home ministry.

The Statue of Shiva with Ravana handing Atma Linga to Bramhin boy(Lord Ganesha)

History
The name “Murudeshwara” means Shiva or Eeshwara. The significance of this holy town dates to the time of Ramayana. By penance dedicated to the AtmaLinga, the divine Lingam of Shiva procures invincibility and immortality to the Hindu Gods. Ravana, the Lanka King worshipped Shiva with devotion to attain immortality by obtaining the AtmaLinga. Lord Shiva appeared before Ravana and asked him what he wanted. By this time Lord Vishnu to change Ravana’s mind on behest of Narada. As a result of this plot, Ravana asks for Goddess Parvathi, and Lord Shiva offers him.
On his way back to Lanka Narada tricks Ravana that the real Parvathi was in Pathala. So Ravana lets off Parvathi and went to Pathala and marries a king’s daughter thinking that she was Parvathi. When he returns back to Lanka his mother then asks for linga. Ravana knowing that he was tricked is angry with Vishnu and meditates to please Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva appears and Ravana asks for His forgiveness. And this time, Ravana requests the AtmaLinga as his boon. Lord Shiva agreed to give him the boon with a condition that it should never be placed on the ground. It is believed that the AtmaLinga was ever placed on the ground, all the powers would return to Lord Shiva again. Having obtained his boon, Ravana started back on his journey to Lanka.
Sage Narada, realised that with the AtmaLinga, Ravana may obtain immortality and create havoc on earth, approached the Lord Ganesh to help him. As Ravana was nearing Gokarna, Lord Vishnu blocked the sun to make it appear as dusk. Ravana now had to perform his evening rituals but was worried because with the AtmaLinga in his hands, he would not be able to do his rituals. At this time, Lord Ganesh, disguised as a Brahmin boy came near him.
Ravana requested him to hold the AtmaLinga until he performed his puja, and told him not to place it on the ground. Ganesh struck a deal with him saying that he would call Ravana thrice, and if Ravana did not return within that time, he would place the AtmaLinga on the ground. As predicted, before Ravana could return after completing his rituals, Ganesh had already placed the AtmaLinga on the ground. Vishnu then removed his illusion and it was daylight again.
Ravana got really angry that he was tricked and tried to uproot the AtmaLinga and destroy it but could not. In a fit of rage he threw the case covering it to a place called Sajjeshwara, 23 miles away. Then he threw the lid of the case to a placed called Guneshwara (now Gunavanthe)and Dhareshwara, 10-12 miles away. Finally, he threw the cloth covering the AtmaLinga to a placed called Mrideshwara in Kanduka-Giri (Kanduka Hill). Mrideshwara has been renamed to Murudeshwara.

Sikh Sangat in Lahore prevented from celebrating Martyrdom of Bhai Taru Singh at Naulakha Bazaar Gurudwara.

Sikhs kept out of their own temple for Shab-e-Barat

LAHORE: The Sikh community in Lahore have been prevented from observing a religious celebration at a gurdwara, their musical equipment thrown out and their entry barred, after a religious group persuaded the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) that celebrating the Muslim holy day of Shab-e-Barat was more important than the Sikh religious festival.

Police have been deployed outside the temple to prevent the Sikhs from conducting their religious ceremonies until the end of Shab-e-Barat, which falls on July 18 this year. The Sikh community wanted to commemorate an eighteenth-century saint on July 16.
The Gurdwara Shaheed Bhai Taru Singh, in Naulakha Bazaar, Lahore, is built to honour the memory of a Sikh saint who was executed in 1745 on the orders of the Mughal governor of Punjab, Zakaria KhanEvery July, the Sikh community has held religious ceremonies to commemorate his sacrifice in the service of humanity.

Bhai Taru Singh was executed in 1745 on the orders of a Muslim Governor.

While the temple was taken over by the ETPB after Partition, the Sikh community had been allowed to continue using it with relatively few restrictions.

Until four years ago.
It was then that a gang of young men from the Dawat-e-Islami, a Barelvi proselytising group, claimed that the gurdwara was located on the site of the burial place of a fifteenth century Muslim saint, Pir Shah Kaku. The group claims that Kaku was the grandson of Baba Fariduddin Ganjshakar, an implausible claim since Ganjshakar died in 1280, while they claim that Kaku died almost 200 years later, in 1477.
The Sikh community had approached the ETPB, which had then allowed both communities to observe their religious rituals according to their own beliefs at the temple. The group used it every Thursday for prayer services while the Sikh community used it once a year for the anniversary of Taru Singh’s martyrdom.
This year, however, when young men from the Sikh community went in to set up their musical instruments on July 13, they were thrown out by the men from Dawat-e-Islami and prevented from re-entering.
Members of the Sikh community, many of whom fear to be identified, said that the leader of the group of men, Sohail Butt, claimed that the temple was now a mosque and that they would not be allowed to bring in their musical instruments any more.
Butt admitted to preventing the Sikhs from performing their ritual, claiming that the temple was inside the courtyard of the mosque.
“Shab-e-Barat is more important than the Sikh ritual,” Butt said, adding that the ETPB had accepted his group’s stance.
Officials from the ETPB admit that they have asked the Sikh community to postpone their celebrations until after Shab-e-Barat.

Amarnath Yatra crosses 234000 pilgrimage in less than two weeks this year.

Posted by hinduexistence on July 11, 2011

Jammu, July 10 (IANS) Less than two weeks into the annual Amarnath pilgrimage 2011, more than 230,000 pilgrims have visited the cave shrine till Sunday and many more are on their way, shrine board officials said.

Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) CEO R.K. Goyal said pilgrims were using both the tracks in north and south Kashmir to shrine to Lord Shiva, located at the height of 13,500 feet above sea level. The cave shrine houses an ice stalagmite formation that is believed to be a symbol of the deity.

Till Sunday noon, 2.34 lakh pilgrims have visited the shrine,’ he said, in a press release.

The number comes despite the number of suspensions of the pilgrimage, that started on June 29, because of hostile weather, rains and slippery tracks and jams on the highway and tracks leading to the shrine.

According to estimates if the current flow of the pilgrims continued, the number would cross more than half a million. About 475,000 pilgrims had paid obeisance at the shrine last year.

The pilgrimage is scheduled to conclude on Raksha Bandhan Day (Aug 13).
