HENB | Hassan | April 24, 2016:: The management committee of the Chennakeshava temple in Belur, Karnatak is anxious following a threat by a Pakistan-based terrorist organisation.
It is reported that the Intelligence Bureau (IB) has directed the committee to take steps to intensify the security in and around the temple. The IB informed the matter to temple executive officer Vidulata over the phone.
Now, the temple management has brought the issue to the notice of the district authorities and Superintendent of Police RK Shapurwad, seeking more security.
Without any metal detectors at the entrance, the 900-year-old Channakeshava temple lacks proper security arrangements.
It may be recalled that an international terrorist group had threatened to blast the temple in November 2004. The police department had deputed a special protection force, bomb squad and rapid action force following the direction of the IB. Such Islamist groups always plan to attack Hindu temples and shrines in India to frighten the pilgrims visit there all around.
R.K. Shahapurwad, the SP, said on Saturday that ‘there was a threat to the 900-year-old Hoysala structure way back in 2014 also’.
Back then, temple authorities had received a letter warning of an attack.
The Hassan police have beefed up security around archaeological sites in Belur, Halebidu and Shravanabelagola following an alert from the Internal Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs on a threat to archaeological structures and religious places in the country.
