Muslim ‘cop’ assaults Hindu woman for wearing bindi in Bangladesh, police probe on, protests all around.

Upasana Das | HENB | Dhaka | April 5, 2022:: A Muslim cop in Bangladesh assaulted a Hindu woman verbally and physically for wearing a bindi (a coloured dot worn between the eyebrows, especially by Hindu women), according to local media reports.

Lata Samaddar, a theatre and media studies lecturer at Tejgaon College in Dhaka, alleged that a “man in uniform” harassed her after spotting bindi on her forehead while she was going to the campus on Saturday morning.

She said the incident took place near Shezan Point shopping mall around 8. 30am.

“A policeman in uniform was sitting there on a parked motorbike. When I was passing by, he started harassing me, seeing a teep (bindi) on my forehead and hurling abuse at me. As I protested, he started the bike and tried to run me over. I tried to move away but got injured severely by falling,” The Daily Star newspaper quoted said Lata as saying.

The woman then filed a complaint with the police and provided the registration number of the motorcycle. Lata said that she could not remember the police officer’s name.

Afterwards, the policeman who reportedly harassed and teased the female teacher for wearing a bindi (teep) in the capital has been identified as constable Nazmul Tareq.

Departmental action would be taken against the constable, Sher-E-Bangla Nagar police station OC Utpal Barua told The Business Standard.

The Tejgaon College teacher, Dr Lata Samaddar filed a general diary (GD) with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station against the policeman for harassment and alleged attempt on her life for wearing a “teep” (bindi).

Islamic intolerance is all time high in Islamic Bangladesh. Minorities in Bangladesh are subject to Islamic persecution by the jihadi elements there as a regular routine.

The incident of harassing a Hindu teacher for wearing a bindi triggered widespread criticism and protests both online and offline in liberal society all around.

Women’s activist organisation Naripokkho staged a protest against the harassment incident.

Actor Subarna Mustafa MP, at a point-of-order in the National Parliament Sunday, denounced the reported harassment and said it is a shameful incident for all.

Famed Bangladeshi writer and women liberation activist Taslima Nasreen (now in exile in India) also condemned the incident and tweeted, “College teacher Lata Samaddar was harassed by a fanatic police in Bangladesh for wearing a bindi. Since then men & women from all communities have been wearing bindis & protesting against the harassment. They (Fanatic Muslims) want no attack on Bengali culture.“
