As per reports, the victim,. Ankita Singh  was a class 12th student in Dumka, Jharkhand who was allegedly set on fire by the accused, a construction worker, Shahrukh, on August 23 after she refused his proposal.

The victim was initially admitted to Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital in critical condition with 90 per cent burns, and was later shifted to another hospital. However, she succumbed to the burn injuries on August 28.

The victim had filed a statement before a magistrate when she was in the hospital where she had named the accused asking for justice. On the same day, the accused was arrested by the police.

As per ANI, the Jharkhand Police also constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the murder.

“10 member SIT constituted for investigation; evidence being collected by the forensics team. The case will be supervised by the Superintendent of Police. This a serious case,” DIG Dumka SP Mandal said.

As the People’s protest in Dumka and all around in ground level and social media platforms were highly reflective; the administration, police and judiciary came forth in action without delay.

As a result of severe protests by the locals in unrest, Section 144 was imposed in some areas. One accused identified as Shahrukh was arrested on August 23 and on Monday one Naeem alias Chottu Khan was also arrested.

Ankita was cremated as per Hindu rites on Monday morning.

Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren on Monday ordered the Dumka administration to provide Rs 10 lakh assistance to the kin of the girl.

According to the chief minister’s office, Soren also directed the proceedings against the accused arrested to be done from the fast-track court.

The director general of police has also been directed to give an early report on the progress of research by the ADG rank officer in the said case.

Meanwhile, Soren on Monday assured the “earliest” punishment to the arrested accused and also called for laws to “further strengthen the existing laws for such incidents”.

Some persons in social media published some joint pictures of Ankita (victim) and Shahrukh (stalker/accused) which indicate an affair between them. Then it may happened that Ankita tried to refuse Shahrukh  after revealing Shahrukh’s Muslim identity or for his vulgar advancement. Anyway, the case is very indicative to the fatal end of a relationship between a Muslim boy and a Hindu girl.
