4 Hindu Sadhus Assaulted In Maharashtra On Child-Lifting Suspicion, Police Tell 6 Arrest.

The mob was seen mercilessly beating the Sadhus with sticks. The mob also seen trying to drag one of the sadhus out of the car by his leg. They then assaulted him with a belt.

Sumitra Sawant | HENB | Sangli | Sept 14, 2022:: The Palghar incident in 2020 to assault and murder Hindu sadhus (monks) in the regime of Uddhav Thackeray’s Maha Vikash Agadi Govt again repeated in Sangli in 2022 in the regime of Eknath Shinde -Devendra Fadanvish Govt. But, no casualty so far reported in the present humiliation on Hindu sadhus so far. However the attacks on Hindu sadhus has a trend-set in Maharashtra these days unfortunately.

Four sadhus were assaulted by a mob on the suspicion of being child lifters in Maharashtra’s Sangli district on Tuesday, a video of which has gone viral. The incident occurred at Lavana village in the district. The locals were seen checking the Aadhaar card of one of the sadhus before they tried to drag him out of the car by his leg. They then assaulted him with a belt.

The four sadhus from, Uttar Pradesh had asked a boy for direction on their way to the temple town of Pandharpur from Karnataka’s Bijapur which led to the locals suspecting that they may be from a gang that kidnaps children, news agency PTI reported citing the police.

The victims had stopped at a temple in the Lavana village and the incident occurred when they were resuming their journey, the report said. The police found that the sadhus were the members of an ‘akhada‘ in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, police said.

The police reached the spot and took the sadhus to hospital. Since they had to go visit a temple, they did not register a complaint, said Dixit Gedam, Superintendent of Police, Sangli. “The police took suo moto cognisance of the incident and registered an offence for hurt and riot. Six accused have been arrested and a search is on for the other accused,” he said.

According to the FIR lodged at the Kaila Devi police station, some men entered the local mosque a few days ago and announced that a child-lifter was active in the area. Based on the FIR, Arman, Waseem, Aslam, Kausar, and Shakruddin were arrested, the police said.

Satendra and Anas, the accused named in the second FIR, allegedly told residents of Garhi that a child-lifter was active in the area. Based on this FIR, the police arrested Satendra and are looking out for Anas.

So, the arrested six persons (5 Muslims and 1 Hindu) are not related the to the Lavana village mob attack on Hindu monks directly.

So, the arrest of 6 persons as told by police is nothing but an eyewash.

Maharashtra BJP MLA Ram Kadam condemned the incident and said the state government will not tolerate such “misbehaviour” with the sadhus. Strict action will be taken against the accused, he said in a video message.

“In the sadhus killing case in Palghar, then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s government meted out injustice to them. But the current Maharashtra government will not allow any injustice against any sadhu,” he said referring to the 2020 incident.

But, the Uddhav Thackeray led faction of the Shiv Sena called the incident “unfortunate” and sought to know how many BJP leaders will visit Sangli. Terming the assault as an attempt to murder the sadhus, spokesperson Anand Dube said the government must clarify if it is with the Hindus or stop pretending that they are “Hinduvadi”.

  “While the government claims to be pro-Hindu and that it protects Hindus, sadhus are being assaulted in Sangli. It was easy to level allegations when we were in power – that our government was anti-Hindu. The government must take cognizance and take stern action against the accused,” he said.

Sangli District Religion Census 2011 shows that the Hindu population is 86.47 % ; Muslim, 8.49 % ; Christian, 0.32 % ; Sikh, 0.04 %. Even then such attack on Hindu Sadhus shows an undercurrent of anti-Hindu mechanism in the area.

Taking his twitter handle Radharamn Das expressed his concern as: “4 Sadhus from Mathura, who were going to Pandharpur on pilgrimage were beaten by a mob in Sangli, Maharashtra. This whole region is where missionaries & mullas have converted villages after villages. Who had Imagined that one day Sadhus can’t even walk on the streets in Bharat?….. The sadhus killed in Palghar r still awaiting Justice. Nobody gives a damn about Hindu lives. Judiciary & Gov both sleeping.”
