Why Hindus stopped ‘Taraweeh Namaz’ during Ramzan in Uttrakhand?

Upendra Bharti | HENB | Haldwani | April 4, 2023:: A Hindutva mob on Monday restricted Muslims in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani from offering ‘Taraweeh Namaz’ only to stop a ‘new culture’ in the Hindu area as a tit for tat while Hindus were not allowed for Ram Navami processions in West Bengal’s Howrah (Shibpur)^{[1][2][3][4][5]}  and Hoogly (Rishra)^{[1][2][3][4][5]}  including many Muslim dominates places across India.

Stopping of such ‘Taraweeh Namaz’ in Hindu areas is said to be a repercussion of Hindu society as reflected in the case of the violations of Hindu Rights to take out Ramnavami Processions in many areas dominated by Muslims across India.

The disruption took place around 8.30 pm in Sarna Kothi, an area dominated by Hindus and reports came that the Hindu people also thrashed the Imam to lead Namaz despite repeated objections.

As per reports, around 50 to 60 men from the Hindutva organisation Bajrang Dal disrupted Taraweeh – special Ramzan prayers held at night during which long portions of the Quran are read by the congregation. The activists opposed the new set of Islamic programmes during Ramzan, defined as a ‘cultural invasion in Hindu areas’ bringing ‘Muslims from outside’.

A local co-ordinator of Bajrang Dal told HENB, “Muslims never allow Hindu programmes like Devi Jagran or Ram Navami rallies in their areas and even in Hindu areas. Then how do we allow them inside us to invite more troubles connecting new Mosques, madrasas, Mazars and Dargahs in Hindu areas.”

In a new trend, Muslim private houses and business places are being used as Islamic prayers and programmes for a period and then changed to mosques or a Muslim Institutions for preaching fundamentalism from there.

In Sarna Kothi, the house of Advocate Zafar Siddique was used for  ‘Taraweeh Namaz’ during this Ramzan month. Local Bajrang Dal leader Mukesh Bhat objected to such ‘lengthy’ noise of Taraweeh prayer and the presence of many ‘unknown’ outsiders in Hindu areas frightening the Hindu girls and women of the area.

However, Advocate  Siddique claimed that police officials were present during the attack and accused the administration of supporting the mob. But, the agitating Hindutv people raised their voices against the incriminating proliferation of radical Islam in the Hindu localities and the State.

Nanital Senior Superintendent of Police Pankaj Bhatt told the media that a case has been filed against those who opposed the prayers under Indian Penal Code Sections 147 (rioting), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) based on a complaint from Muslims of the area.
