Champak Kalita | HENB | Guwahati | Aug 5, 2023:: Police in Assam’s Darrang district have arrested two members of Rashtriya Bajrang Dal for allegedly holding an arms training camp at a private school in Mangaldoi in end-July.

The camp was attended by Rashtriya Bajrang Dal members from across the Northeast, who stayed on the campus. The school, which has about 2,000 students from nursery to Class XII, was on vacation.

Darrang Superintendent of Police Prakash Sonowal told PTI that two members of the outfit — Bijoy Ghosh and Gopal Boro — have been arrested for organising the camp between July 24 to July 30 at the premises of Maharishi Vidya Mandir school in Mangaldoi.

The Rashtriya Bajrang Dal claimed that 350 youths across Assam were trained in handling air-Rifle, toy pistol, smoke gun, bow & arrows, wooden-swords and martial arts, besides lessons on arts, politics and spirituality at the four-day camp organised in the Maharishi Vidya Mandir school. In the training no unauthorized arms and weapons were used anyway. The training was designed to boost up physical and mental strength, personality development, social responsibility and national building.

It is also told by RBD that the organization is dedicated to the country with a National spirit of Hindutva and it is not linked with any anti-national or subversive activities.

The Rashtriya Bajrang Dal  (RBD) was launched by former VHP leader Pravin Togadia in 2018.

The police arrested two Rashtriya Bajrang Dal (RBD) members on Wednesday and produced them in a local court. Gopal Boro was arrested from his home at Dimagusi in neighbouring Udalguri district, about 60km from Mangaldoi, and Bijay Ghosh was picked up from his Mangaldoi home.

They were remanded in a day’s police custody, following which they were sent to judicial custody. A search is on for the others involved in the camp.

On Tuesday, the police had arrested school principal Hemanta Payeng and senior office employee Ratan Das but they were granted bail around 9pm.

They had told the police that permission had been granted by the school authorities to an RBD member, Abhijit Ghose, to hold a yoga camp, not an arms training camp, sources said.

The police said the arrests were made on a complaint that was filed after a video surfaced on Monday purportedly showing an arms training camp being conducted at the Mangaldoi Maharishi Vidyamandir Vidyalaya.

The case has been registered under IPC Sections 153A and 34 dealing with promoting enmity between different groups and criminal acts by several persons in furtherance of common intention.

But, it is also surfaced that Raijor Dal president and MLA Akhil Gogoi has written a letter to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and questioned if the training camp was a “preparation to carry out communal clashes” in the state. Raijor Dal is believed as a left-liberal wing advocating Socialist politics linked with Urban Naxals.

“Will there be any disturbance before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls? The role of Home Department, which is under you, and Assam Police have made citizens of Assam concerned,” he added.

Gogoi also demanded adding other stringent provisions of the law such as the National Security Act (NSA) and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UA(P)A) in the case.

“Mr Chief Minister, you have demolished several madrassas for carrying out alleged jehadi activities. Now, will you not take strong action against Maharishi Vidya Mandir School for the arms camp? Will this discriminatory action not create hatred in people’s minds against the government?” he asked.

The Raijor Dal has also filed a complaint against the Rashtriya Bajrang Dal at Nalbari Police Station for organising the arms camp.

On Tuesday, Leader of the Opposition in Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia of Congress had written to the Chief Minister, demanding action against the organisers and an enquiry into the role of the district administration.

Under the pressure of Raijor Dal and Assam Pradesh Congress, Assam Police had issue an notice to the Central President of RBD, Manoj Kumar alias  Manoj Singh.

From the row of Mangaldoi Training Camp, it is evident that the anti-Hindu forces in the State is trying to ban Rashtriya Bajrang Dal in BJP ruled Assam by putting many false allegations against the organization. But, the Raijor Dal or Assam Congress have never questioned anything against the real terror camps throughout North East India.
