Rajasthan to Pioneer Sanskrit Education at Pre-Primary Level.

A New Era for Sanskrit: In a First, Rajasthan to Make it Compulsory at Pre-Primary Level.

Upendra Bharti  | HENB | Jaipur | Aug 9, 2025:: In a groundbreaking move, the Rajasthan government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is set to become the first state in India to introduce Sanskrit as a compulsory subject at the pre-primary level in all schools. This initiative aims to promote the ancient language and cultural heritage among young learners.

A Historic Decision

According to Priyanka Jodhawat, Commissioner of Rajasthan’s Sanskrit Education Department, “Rajasthan will be the first state in India to teach Sanskrit at the pre-primary level. A proposal has been sent to the cabinet in this regard earlier this year. We have prepared the curriculum framework and also launched the books. We will start the classes once the cabinet gives the final nod.”

Phased Implementation

An official from the Education Minister’s Office confirmed to HENB that the project will be implemented in three phases. “In the first phase, we will start at the pre-primary schools only under the Sanskrit education department. There is no pre-primary school running in the Sanskrit schools in Rajasthan. However, at least 757 pre-primary Sanskrit schools are proposed, which will be starting in a month. Sanskrit will be a must subject in all those schools from the start,” the official said.

The initiative will be extended to 962 Mahatma Gandhi English Medium Schools (MGEMS) and 660 PM-Shree Schools in Rajasthan in the second and third phases, respectively, next year.

Curriculum and Books

The curriculum framework and books have been prepared by the Rajasthan State Council for Educational Research and Training (RSCERT) and approved by both the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and the state government. The three books, named Sanskritpraveshah: Balvaatika Pratham Vaag, Sanskritpraveshah: Balvaatika Dwitiya Vaag, and Sanskritpraveshah: Balvaatika Tritya Vaag, are designed like comic books to attract children and introduce them to basic vocabulary and grammar of Sanskrit.

A Step towards Cultural Preservation

The introduction of Sanskrit at the pre-primary level is a significant step towards preserving and promoting India’s cultural heritage. The initiative is expected to benefit students in multiple ways, including enhancing their cognitive development, language skills, and cultural awareness.

A New Era for Sanskrit Education

The launch of the books by Education Minister Madan Dilawar and Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma during the state-level Bhamashah Felicitation Ceremony on June 28 marks a new era for Sanskrit education in Rajasthan. With this initiative, Rajasthan is poised to set a precedent for other states to follow in promoting Sanskrit education.

Impact on Students and Society

The introduction of Sanskrit at the pre-primary level is expected to have a positive impact on students and society as a whole. It will help students develop a deeper understanding of their cultural heritage and promote interfaith understanding and respect. The initiative will also contribute to the preservation and promotion of Sanskrit, a language that is an integral part of India’s rich cultural legacy.
