Nihal Ranjeet Singh | HENB | Amritsar | Nov 22, 2025 :: The Punjab Bachao Andolan (PBA), a prominent organization, has demanded strict action against Christian missionaries allegedly involved in large-scale conversions in Punjab. The PBA claims that these missionaries are using “miracle cures” to lure people into Christianity, violating existing laws.
Allegations Against Missionaries
The PBA alleges that around 65,000 pastors are operating in Punjab, engaging in conversions through enticement, coercion, and fake miracle cures. The organization claims that foreign nationals are also involved in these activities, often on tourist or work visas, despite requiring a missionary visa.
Demand for Anti-Conversion Law
The PBA has demanded the introduction of an anti-conversion law in Punjab, citing the significant increase in the Christian population in the state. According to the organization, the Christian population has risen from 1.26% in 2011 to nearly 15% in recent years.
Concerns Over Land Use and Funding
The PBA has also raised concerns over the diversion of agricultural land for building temporary Christian worship centers, known as “deras”, and the use of loudspeakers and advertisements, which disturb the peace and religious sentiments of others. The organization has demanded an investigation into alleged foreign funding of Christian groups and the withdrawal of reservation benefits for Christian converts.
Next Steps
The PBA plans to submit memorandums to the chief minister, governor, and chief justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, and file public interest litigations (PILs) on the issue. The organization is also seeking an updated religious census to reflect the accurate number of Christians in Punjab.
The PBA’s demands have sparked a debate about the role of religion in Punjab and the need for stricter regulations on conversions. The issue is likely to escalate in the coming days, with the PBA determined to take its demands to the highest authorities.
