B Upendran | HENB | Tiruchirappalli | Dec 10, 2025:: In the heart of Tamil Nadu, a centuries-old tradition was facing an unexpected challenge. The Tamil Nadu government had moved the Supreme Court against a Madras High Court order allowing devotees of the revered Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple to light the traditional Karthigai Deepam lamp at the Deepathoon, a stone lamp pillar near a dargah in Madurai. The issue had the potential to ignite tensions, but RSS Chief Dr. Mohan Bhagwat remained diplomatic.
Speaking at the “100 years of Sangh Journey- New Horizons” event in Tiruchirappalli, Bhagwat exuded confidence that the Thiruparankundram issue could be resolved within the state, leveraging the strength of Hindus in Tamil Nadu. “The awakening of Hindus in Tamil Nadu is enough to bring about the desired result,” he asserted, emphasizing the role of local Hindu organizations in finding a solution.
When asked about escalating the issue nationally, Bhagwat’s tone turned measured. “If the Thiruparankundram issue needs escalation, it will be done,” he said, his words carrying a sense of quiet determination. “The matter is now sub-judice, let it resolve.” Yet, he made it clear that the RSS was prepared for all eventualities, adding, “If needed, the Hindu organizations working in Tamil Nadu will let us know, and then we will think about it.”
Bhagwat’s emphasis on local resolution was evident as he stated, “At present, I think the issue can be resolved here only on the basis of Hindus’ strength in Tamil Nadu.” But the undertone was unmistakable – the RSS would not hesitate to amplify its efforts if required. “We will not need to escalate it,” he said with conviction, “But one thing is pakka (for sure), that the issue will be resolved favourably for Hindus.”
The story of Thiruparankundram became a microcosm of the larger narrative of Hindu identity and resilience. With Bhagwat’s guidance, the RSS was poised to navigate the complex web of politics and faith, ensuring that the rights of Hindus were protected and their traditions honored. The outcome, as Bhagwat had predicted, would be a testament to the power of collective strength and determination – either through local resolve or a more pronounced presence, the RSS would see the issue through.
