‘The Kerala Story 2- Goes Beyond’ gets strong X reviews: ‘Not just a film, it’s a warning,’ – netizens urge families to watch.

‘The Kerala Story 2’ Released After Legal Hurdles; Producer Vipul Shah Welcomes High Court Verdict as Social Media Reactions Pour In.

Upendra Bharti | HENB | New Delhi |March 3, 2026:: After days of legal uncertainty and mounting public debate, The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond has finally hit theatres across India. The film’s release follows a series of significant court interventions, culminating in the Kerala High Court lifting an interim stay that had temporarily halted its theatrical debut. As the film screens nationwide, producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah has publicly welcomed the court’s decision, while social media platforms—particularly X (formerly Twitter)—have witnessed an outpouring of strong and polarized reactions.

Legal Developments Surrounding the Release

The controversy surrounding the film intensified when a single-judge bench of the Kerala High Court, led by Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas, imposed a 15-day stay on its release. The court also criticized the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for allegedly granting certification “without applying its mind,” and directed the Board to re-examine objections raised against the film.

However, the producers promptly appealed the order. In a special evening session held at 7:30 pm, a Division Bench comprising Justices SA Dharmadhikar and PV Balakrishnan overturned the earlier ruling. The Bench lifted the temporary stay, thereby clearing the way for the film’s theatrical release.

In parallel, the Madras High Court addressed concerns over potential copyright infringement. Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy granted an interim injunction restraining cable television operators and internet service providers from unlawfully broadcasting the film. The order came in response to petitions filed by Sunshine Pictures Limited, which expressed apprehension about copyright violations. At the same time, the court observed that the broad scope of relief sought might affect legitimate business interests and directed the plaintiff to furnish an indemnity.

Producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah Responds

Following the Kerala High Court’s ruling, producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah held a press conference in Mumbai, describing the verdict as a vindication of the CBFC’s certification process.

“Now, there is no point in further discussion following the High Court’s order. The honorable judges did not find any shortcomings in the functioning of the CBFC,” Shah said, according to media reports.

Shah elaborated on the certification process, stating that an eight-member examining committee reviewed the film instead of the standard five-member panel. He noted that the committee included two social workers from Kerala to ensure that there was no misrepresentation related to the state. Additionally, a Delhi-based professor with expertise in socio-political subjects was invited to the screening.

“After these three experts viewed the movie and shared their feedback, the certificate was granted by the CBFC,” Shah stated. He added that while the initial bench may not have considered these details fully, the Division Bench acknowledged the expert input and found no grounds to question the certification.

Controversy Over Content

The film has drawn scrutiny primarily due to its subject matter. The trailer depicts Hindu women allegedly being targeted by Muslim men under the guise of romantic relationships, presenting such relationships as instruments of manipulation and coercion leading to religious conversion.

While recognizing the importance of artistic freedom, the Kerala High Court had earlier observed that branding the film as inspired by true events and explicitly linking it to Kerala could potentially lead to public misunderstanding or unrest.

Written by Amarnath Jha and Vipul Amrutlal Shah and directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh, the sequel builds upon themes similar to those explored in the 2023 film The Kerala Story, which also generated nationwide debate.

Cast, Plot, and Release

The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond stars Ulka Gupta, Aditi Bhatia, and Aishwarya Ojha in leading roles. The narrative follows three young women—Surekha Nair (Ulka Gupta), Neha Sant (Aishwarya Ojha), and Divya Paliwal (Aditi Bhatia)—whose lives are depicted as being transformed by relationships that allegedly result in religious conversion.

Originally scheduled to release on February 27, 2026, the film’s debut was delayed due to the interim stay. With the legal barrier now lifted, it is screening across multiple states, including Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Strong Social Media Reactions

The film’s release has sparked intense reactions online. On X, several viewers have described the movie as more than entertainment, characterizing it as a “warning” and urging families to watch it together.

One viewer wrote after a first-day screening, “This is not just a film. It’s a warning shot straight at your comfort zone… It shakes you, but it also wakes you up.” Another post described the film as “uncomfortable but necessary,” emphasizing awareness as a form of protection.

Another reaction highlighted empowerment rather than fear: “I didn’t walk out scared. I walked out more aware. And awareness is power.”

One of the viewers of the film conveyes: “Watched #TheKeralaStory2 movie. The film is an eye opener for entire Hindu Samaj. The movie has been shown very very close to reality. Hats Off to makers of the film”.

While many posts praise the film for addressing what supporters call “uncomfortable truths,” critics have raised concerns about its portrayal of interfaith relationships and the potential for reinforcing stereotypes. The polarized response underscores the film’s sensitive subject matter and the broader socio-political debates it has reignited.

A Film at the Intersection of Law, Art, and Public Discourse

With theatres reporting strong footfall amid heightened curiosity, The Kerala Story 2 has positioned itself at the intersection of cinematic expression and judicial scrutiny. The legal battles preceding its release have arguably amplified public interest, transforming the film into a focal point for discussions on censorship, artistic freedom, religious sensitivity, and social responsibility.

As audiences continue to respond—both in support and criticism—the film’s long-term cultural and commercial impact remains to be seen. For now, it stands as one of the most debated releases of the year, demonstrating how cinema in India continues to engage deeply with contentious and complex social themes.
