Multiple FIRs Against BJP MLA Asim Sarkar Over Remarks on Quran After Lynching of Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh. Gets Life Threats. 

Tungish Kiran Mitra | HENB | Kolkata| Dec 2, 2026::  A major political and communal controversy has erupted in West Bengal following the lodging of multiple FIRs against BJP MLA from Haringhata, Asim Sarkar, over his remarks on the Quran made in the backdrop of the brutal lynching of Hindu garment worker Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh on allegations of blasphemy.

Sarkar’s comments, delivered last week, quickly went viral on social media, triggering sharp reactions from Muslim organisations and leaders across the state. While Sarkar claimed his remarks were meant to expose what he described as “hate-inciting verses” that allegedly lead to violence against non-Muslims, sections of the Muslim community in West Bengal perceived the statements as a direct insult to the Quran and Islam.

FIRs Filed Across Multiple Police Stations

The first complaint against Sarkar was filed by West Bengal Minister of State for Power Akhruzzaman at Raghunathganj police station. Another FIR was registered at Basanti police station.

In Shamsherganj, Trinamool Congress MLA Amirul Islam lodged a separate complaint, stating:

“A video clip went viral and Sarkar is seen making derogatory, uncouth statements. He tried to demean Islam and it seems that he did that deliberately. It is also clear that he tried to intentionally hurt the sentiments of Muslims. Being a representative of the people, he should have shown restraint in his comments.”

Additionally, the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) filed a complaint against Sarkar at Domkal police station. The religious organisation Jamaat-e-Islami Hind also strongly condemned Sarkar’s remarks, calling them “unconstitutional,” “insulting,” and “unparliamentary.”

BJP Distances Itself From Sarkar’s Remarks

Amid mounting pressure, the Bengal BJP leadership distanced itself from Sarkar’s statements. BJP’s Bongaon MP and junior Union minister Shantanu Thakur said:

“Asim Sarkar made a remark and we don’t want to comment on that. I hope that he reads things before speaking on them.”

Viral Video and Sarkar’s Controversial Statement

In the now-viral video, Sarkar strongly condemned the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, calling it the killing of an innocent Hindu worker on a false blasphemy charge. During his address, Sarkar went on to say that if any religious book incites violence, he would urinate upon it, a remark that drew widespread outrage.

Sarkar also sang a Bengali verse-song written by him during the commentary:

If the killing of Dipu Das is God’s decree,
Then the Quran is an enemy of boundless humanity.
You Hindus, unite to uphold your honor and dignity,
Then the Quran is an enemy of boundless humanity.
If the Holy Quran contains messages of hatred,
Then the seeds of hatred will spread throughout the world.
Does the country run by the Quran or by the Constitution?
Then the Quran is an enemy of boundless humanity.

References to Quranic Verses and Allegations of Hate Speech

Sarkar further cited several Quranic verses — 9:5, 9:28, 9:37, 5:57, 4:101, 33:61, 21:98, 32:22, 48:20, 8:69, and 66:9 — to argue that Islam harbours hatred towards non-Muslims. He categorically claimed that “hate-filled scriptures are dangerous to civil society and could destroy civilisation.”

Q 8.69 “So consume what you have taken of war booty [as being] lawful and good, and fear Allah . Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.”
Q 66.9 “O Prophet, strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them. And their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the destination.”

But what may have burned Dipu Chandra Das in a hell of blasphemy fire in Bangladesh could have been instigated according to the direct dictum of the Quran.

“Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our verses—We will drive them into a Fire. Every time their skins are roasted through, We will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted in Might and Wise”. (Quran. 4:56)

Threats and Abuse Alleged by Sarkar

Following the controversy, Sarkar claimed that he has been receiving life threats (Sar Tan Se Juda) and excessive verbal abuse over telephone, adding that the situation has raised serious concerns for his personal safety.
