Upendra Bharti | HENB | Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh | June 1, 2026:: The murder of 17-year-old Hindu student Surya Pratap Chauhan in Ghaziabad’s Khoda Colony and the subsequent encounter death of the main Muslim accused, Asad, have intensified public debate, with conflicting accounts emerging over the motive behind the crime.
Surya Pratap Chauhan, a Class 11 student and resident of Navneet Vihar Colony in Khoda, was allegedly stabbed multiple times during a confrontation near Sharma Dairy on May 28. He was initially taken to a local hospital and later shifted to a private hospital in Noida, where he succumbed to his injuries on Friday.
According to a complaint filed by his elder brother Yash, Surya was with his friends Ayush and Vicky when they encountered Asad. The complaint alleges that an argument broke out, after which Asad stabbed Surya four times in the abdomen.
Police subsequently registered a case against multiple accused persons named by the family.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (City) Dhawal Jaiswal, police acted on specific intelligence regarding the whereabouts of Asad, who had allegedly been absconding since the incident.
Police stated that when officers attempted to intercept him in the Khoda area early Sunday morning, Asad allegedly opened fire on the police team. Officers returned fire in what police described as self-defence, injuring the accused. He was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Authorities had earlier announced a reward of ₹50,000 for information leading to his arrest.
Following the encounter, Surya’s mother demanded strict action against all those allegedly involved in her son’s murder. She said she wanted confirmation that the person killed in the encounter was indeed Asad and stated that she wished to see his photograph.
She further demanded that the remaining accused also face severe legal consequences. According to her statements to the media, seven individuals were involved in the attack on her son, and she expressed a desire to see similar encounter action taken against the other accused as well.
A different version of events has emerged from statements attributed to Surya’s friend Vicky.
According to sources cited by friends of the victim’s family, Surya had argued against cow slaughter during the upcoming Bakrid festival. These sources allege that Asad responded by saying that no power in India could stop cow slaughter and that Muslims were fond of beef. The same sources further claim that derogatory remarks were made about Hindus and their reverence for the cow.
These allegations have not been independently verified by investigators in the information currently available.
According to Vicky’s account, Surya, Vicky and Ayush had gone to the accused’s locality after being invited earlier in the day by a neighbourhood youth. Vicky alleged that a conversation escalated into a confrontation.
He further claimed that Asad said, “Aao dikhate hain” (“Come, we will show you”), while referring to the killing of a goat. According to Vicky, when Surya attempted to leave the area, he was abused and then attacked, leading to the fatal stabbing.
Police have also presented an alternative line of investigation. According to reports citing preliminary findings, investigators believe the victim and accused were known to one another and that an argument related to riding a motorcycle may have escalated into violence.
However, this explanation has been questioned by some supporters of the victim’s family and other commentators, who argue that the motorcycle-dispute theory may not reflect the actual cause of the confrontation. They contend that the incident stemmed from a communal dispute and view the motorcycle angle as an attempt to downplay that possibility.
At present, these claims remain competing narratives. Authorities have not publicly released conclusive findings establishing either motive.
Police have already arrested several accused persons in connection with the case, while investigations into the roles of the remaining suspects continue.
The case has attracted widespread attention due to the brutal nature of the stabbing, the encounter death of the principal accused, and the ongoing dispute over whether the killing arose from a personal altercation, a communal confrontation, or a combination of factors.
As the investigation proceeds, the final determination regarding motive and the involvement of each accused will depend on evidence examined by law-enforcement agencies and the courts.
