God Particle – CERN – Lord Shiva (Nataraj).

DANCE OF SHIVA IN CERN.

Upananda Brahmachari.

‘God Particles’ have no scientific relation with GOD as per the atheist point of view. Rather they claim that the discovery of God particle is a landmark “win for science over superstition”. In an article in Washington Post under the heading God particle discovery is a win for science over superstitionRick Wingrove claims: “The discovery is yet another demonstration of Scientific methodology as the scrupulous process by which humankind acquires and authenticates all knowledge. The importance of this becomes more obvious when contrasted against the current resurgence of rabid religionism, especially the unabashed and exuberant anti-intellectualism of those who assert that they hold special knowledge, supplied by talkative deities, and who strive to supplant Science with bronze age origin fables.” (WP dt July 11, 2012).

Actually, there is a huge bronze Nataraj statue in front of CERN the European Center for Research in Particle Physics in Geneva, Switzerland. And CERN is the present authority to draw all attention on the God particle through its dedicated research all around.

This bronze statue of Nataraja is not made in the Bronze Age by some ancient people. Modern sculptors of Bharat (India) have made it in a very artistic way and this was presented to the CERN authority by the Indian Science Mission as it was sent by Govt of India in 2004.

The statue of the Indian deity Shiva at CERN was unveiled by His Excellency K M Chandrasekhar (seated), Dr. Anil Kakodkar (left) and Dr. Robert Aymar (centre).

On June 18, 2004, an unusual new landmark was unveiled at CERN, the European Center for Research in Particle Physics in Geneva — a 2m tall statue of the Indian deity Shiva Nataraja, the Lord of Dance. The statue, symbolizing Shiva’s cosmic dance of creation and destruction, was given to CERN by the Indian government to celebrate the research center’s long association with India. The statue of Lord Shiva at CERN was unveiled by His Excellency K M Chandrashekhera, the Indian ambassador to WTO, Geneva, Dr Anil Kakodkar  (eminent Indian nuclear scientist) and Dr Robert Aymar (Director General of CERN (2004–2008), with a mighty pleasure  of other CERN scientists.

‘In choosing the image of Shiva Nataraja, the Indian government acknowledged the profound significance of the metaphor of Shiva’s dance for the cosmic dance of subatomic particles, which is observed and analyzed by CERN’s physicists. The parallel between Shiva’s dance and the dance of subatomic particles was first discussed by Fritjof Capra in an article titled “The Dance of Shiva: The Hindu View of Matter in the Light of Modern Physics,” published in Main Currents in Modern Thought in 1972. Shiva’s cosmic dance then became a central metaphor in Capra’s international bestseller The Tao of Physics, first published in 1975 and still in print in over 40 editions around the world.

A special plaque next to the Shiva statue at CERN explains the significance of the metaphor of Shiva’s cosmic dance with several quotations from The Tao of Physics. Here is the text of the plaque:

Ananda K. Coomaraswamy, seeing beyond the unsurpassed rhythm, beauty, power and grace of the Nataraja, once wrote of it “It is the clearest image of the activity of God which any art or religion can boast of.”

More recently, Fritjof Capra explained that “Modern physics has shown that the rhythm of creation and destruction is not only manifest in the turn of the seasons and in the birth and death of all living creatures, but is also the very essence of inorganic matter,” and that “For the modern physicists, then, Shiva’s dance is the dance of subatomic matter.”

It is indeed as Capra concluded: “Hundreds of years ago, Indian artists created visual images of dancing Shivas in a beautiful series of bronzes. In our time, physicists have used the most advanced technology to portray the patterns of the cosmic dance. The metaphor of the cosmic dance thus unifies ancient mythology, religious art and modern physics.”‘

In traditional Indian point of view the Science has no contradiction of Dharma, mostly misunderstood as Religion. While religion is some restrictions for a section to run a particular belief fermented with some ethos, Dharma is a far different from that concept. Dhrama is the reality of attributes of entire life process in a method of sacrifice of individual for the society and good hood. In Vivekananda’s word it is ‘manifestation of divinity already in man’. It is Dharma and certainly not religion.

So the properties of a particle is Dharma, attribute of human being is Dharma, the enforcement of nature is Dharma and all pervading Dharma is the inherent basics of everything. It is not at all superstitions. It is the synthesis of science, philosophy, knowledge, intuition and everything in a single and supreme entity, which religion doesn’t. This relates to Truth. Not any myth at all.

So far, CERN is concerned to that supreme truth of the creation, particles and predominance, it has no contradiction of Dhrama.. God particle is  now giving some hint of creation, preservation and destruction from a single source, which is artistically simulated in the Dance of Nataraj. So the presence of Nataraj in front CERN is very much significant.

As per Hindu realization (one may degenerate it by calling it Hindu mythology) with a subtle scientific approach, Lord Shiva (Nataraja) is described as Devadideva, the primordial god of all gods, the supreme creator and the Mahadeva, the greatest god, the supreme source of energy. Shiva is the cosmic dancer who performs his divine dance to destroy a weary universe and make preparations for god Brahma to start the process of creation afresh. This new creation is harmonized and preserved by god Vishnu, obviously by the force of trinity in the singularized and unique entity originated from that Devadideva or Mahadeva. Lord Shiva, the Grand Designer. Lord Mahakal. The reality of Infinite Time and Space. The circular continuity of creation, preservation and destruction. Shiva. Shiva. Shiva. I think CERN has that same reverence to that truth behind Statue of Lord Nataraja situated in front of the CERN Head Quarter in Geneva.

We find the majestic dance of Lord Shiva in front of CERN institute. Shiva is dancing in an aureole of flames with a rhythm of time infinite so beautifully, lifting his left leg and balancing over a demon or dwarf (Apasmara) who symbolizes ignorance and evils. Om Namah Shivay. It means adorn all endeavors in the light of truth, prosperity and maturity engrossed in eternity divulged both in science and philosophy.

    Dear Upananda,

The discovery of God Particle supplements the wisdom Vedanta, that says, “everything in the Universe are arising out of a single source Brahman”. If science is a venomous snake, Islam, Christianity and Judaism are frogs distancing them from science to save their lives.. But Hindu Dharma is a skilled snake charmer that readily catches the snake and puts in the basket.

Thank you for writing such a good article.

    Dear Sir,

The Indian Nuclear Scientist name is DR ANIL KAKODKAR and not Anil Kaodar. Please make necessary correction.

Lord Nataraja’s cosmic dance of creation and destruction is the dance of subatomic matter. The universe knows something we don’t. And it acts on cosmic scales. When we look up to the stars we see matter everywhere we look, across vast distances and far back in time. Lord Nataraja’s cosmic dance of creation and destruction represents the changes in the universe, as matter and energy constantly bump into each other, create and destroy systems and keep renewing the world. This cosmic dance of creation and destruction is the interaction of matter and antimatter. We have more matter than antimatter, which means that this particular cosmic ballet is unbalanced, and the Lord Nataraja’s cosmic dance of creation and destruction is a constant reminder of this fact. We don’t know why nature prefers to matter to antimatter, and until we know why we can’t really claim to understand how the universe works.

Every atom of the universe may be classified into the 5 elements: Namasivaya (earth, water sun/fire, wind and ether) Human beings consist of Namasivaya.

Every one who believes God tends to interface everything with God. Actually God exists out of sheer Faith. Science exists out of sheer experiments. Whether Science can experiment God or Science can be completely pushed to the domain of Faith is a never ending question. We are presented in this Universe with many entities which are separable into two main Domains namely God and Science. The correlation between Lord Shiva’s Cosmic dance and Scientist projection of sub atomic Particles Cosmic dance is nevertheless zero. I think Human era will pursue the link between the Two dances till its extinct and perhaps fail.
