Yog-siksha now compulsory in Tripura schools from this year.

Left-ruled Tripura makes yoga compulsory for I-VIII standard school students.

Soumik Das | HENB | Agartala | Jan 1, 2016:: The Tripura government has introduced yoga as a subject in schools from classes one to eight from the current academic year beginning January, as stated by Chief Minister Manik Sarkar.

“Yoga would be introduced as a subject in government-run and government-aided schools from classes one to eight from next academic year beginning January,” Mr Sarkar said, addressing a function organised in connection with a state-level yoga competition.

“Due to a shortage of yoga trainers and teachers, it would not be introduced in all schools from the next academic year. All schools under a block would be made into a cluster for teaching yoga,” he said.

The state’s school education and sports and youth affairs departments has already drawn up a plan for this purpose, the chief minister said.

“We will introduce yoga in phases. In the first phase, 100 schools from across the state will be chosen, “state education minister Tapan Chakraborty said.

These schools will be selected from urban, rural and Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) areas. The decision was taken in a meeting of the council of ministers chaired by Chief Minister Manik Sarkar.

He urged the yoga associations to help the government in making the plan a success.

As such Tripura, a leftist ruled State  becomes the second state after Gujarat to make yoga compulsory in schools.
