To grow the devotional spirit within Humankind; Science, Maths, Management Professors perform Nama-Kirtan (praise the Lord’s name in song) programmes.

Upananda Brahmachari | HENB | Kolkata | July 22, 2018:: In the process of praise the Lord’s name in the form of devotional song, i.e. through Nam-Kirtan the mind comes blissful. Nam-Kirtan gives enormous joy and creates love and compassion to everybody. Not only that, the ego, stress, anxiety and fidgetiness and all kind of mental and psychological disorders come under control or otherwise disappear with the practice of Nam-Kirtan. This is the realization about Nam-Kirtan as perceived by Dr Arijit Ghosh (M.Sc., Ph. D., PGDIM, PGDOM, GDOR), the Head of the Department of Maths at Department of Commerce Morning Faculty of eminent St. Xavier College, Kolkata.

This realization is not of Dr Ghosh as an exceptional case, but at least 11 Ph. D holders and eminent professors working in various faculties of eminent colleges of West Bengal feels the developing energies, liberty of mind, generosity, immunity against ailments, joy and bliss though the regular practice of Nam-Kirtan.

Dr Gautam Bandopadhyay, Associate Professor in the Dept. of Management Studies, National Institute of Technology, Durgapur feels regular Nam-Kirtan, even once a day after one’s daily engagements and tight schedule of job is over, can give unique change in life to attain the liberation. These professors and masters all joined hands to create a group named ”Prabhuji”  for spreading the joy and love of Nam-Kirtan in the public. The devotional group already performed over 60 Nam-Kirtan programmes in last two-three years in Kolkata and other places in West Bengal. “Prabhuji” conducts all their programmes obviously free of cost if they gets invitations in time to perform Nam-Kirtan in any desired destination.

The Bengali Culture has its own Nam-Sankirtan tradition since ages back to Chaitanya Maha Prabhu (1486 –1534 AD) who was the icon of Bhakti movement and introduced the “Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare” mahamantra for all for realization of godhead. Harichand Thakur (1812-1877 AD) who introduced the Matua practices in subsequent Bhakti movement as a social engineering to uplift the backward people of Bengal, he also emphasized on Hari-Nam-Sankirtan. As an epicenter of Shakti-Sadhana (Worship of Mother Power), Bengal inculcated the Kali-Kirtan and Sadhak Ram Prasad (1718-1775 AD) and Paramhans Ramakrishna Dev (1836-1886 AD) both infused the spirit of Kali-Kirtan in the public mind. Even Bengal has the tradition of Ramnam Sankirtan in every Ekadashi (the eleventh lunar day) in many places in Bengal. And, obviously, most of the initiated Bengali persons attached to any Ashram-Math-Mission take part in Guru Nam-Sankirtan.  Though, the Bengal legacy of Nam-Sankirtan or Nam-Kirtan is nothing new, now it is exploring the campuses of colleges and universities in Bengal, hitherto known as the dane of communists and naxalites! 

On Sunday, there was a Khunti Puja (Pole worship) on the occasion of Ultorath Yatra (Back Chariot Festival) in a club near Thakur Pukur Police Station. Many clubs in Bengal do the Khunti Puja to start the pandal of Durga Puja with a vibe now-a-days. The full team of Nam-Sankirtan group ”Prabhuji” was invited by the club authorities to show their excellence in devotional feat.

The audience present in the programme was so overwhelmed in the beauty and serenity of the Nam-Sankirtan, they could not resit themselves from participating the chorus culminates the spiritual essence of divine life. The melody of Nam-Kirtan by ”Prabhuji” filled the venue within minutes attracting the neighboring mass and passers by in a magical way. The traditional musical instruments Khol, Kartal, Harmonium were used in a very appropriate way to flow the nectar of Nam-kirtan in every hearts.

Dr Arijit Ghosh, Assistant Professor of St. Xavier College narrates his initial interest in Nam-Sankirtan conspicuously. He was doing his research under the guidance of  Dr Gautam Bandopadhyay of NIT, Durgapur and Dr Bandopadhyay was a Master of Nam-Kirtan.

“I did well in my Ph. D in Maths under the guidance of Dr. Bandopadhyay. But, I was equally enriched with the divine grace with the association of Dr Bandopadhyay. The spirituality or the divinity lies in a latent stage in everybody, but it awakens exactly with the association of right person and proper atmosphere. Every body has its spiritual appetite. Nam-Sankirtan fulfills it well and meaningfully. So, I came to the world of Nam-Sankirtan”, Dr Ghosh recounts his early days of entry into his Nam-Sankirtan life.

The other dignitaries in ”Prabhuji” Nam-Kirtan Group, Prof. Siddhakam Bhattacharya, Anupam Dey, Maloy Bhattacharya and others manage time after teaching sessions in their colleges and other engagements. After colleges are over, they find some time to practice Nam-sankirtan regularly and try to invite new friends in their devotional dimension. They believe that Nam-Kirtan can build the Harmony, Peace and Development without any fear, corruption and discrimination.

Hopefully, the devotional venture of Prabhuji is increasing in an outstanding way. The eminent professors in science, maths and stats are now grossly engaged too to make solutions for the crisis of Humanities through “Nam-Kirtan” along with serving their faculties as usual.
