Kaberi Das | HENB | Islampur | Sept 20, 2018 (updated on Sept 21, 2018):: A Hindu student succumbed to bullet injuries and at least nine others, including some police personnel, were injured after a students’ agitation turned violent over the appointment of teachers at a school in Islampur of Uttar Dinajpur in West Bengal on Thursday.
The incident took place at Darivit High School in Ponditpota area after thousands of students alongwith local residents blocked roads for protesting against the state education board’s decision to appoint of ‘unnecessary’ Urdu teachers at the government-sponsored institution.
The students demanded that they needed teachers in other subjects, and not for Urdu, as the school already had two teachers for that subject.
The student claimed that there were no students in Urdu in that school in fact. And there is no Urdu Stream in that school, as reported.
According to the students, they had been agitating for the last three days at the Darivit high school against authorities appointing three new teachers for some languages (two for Urdu and one for Sanskrit) while allegedly ignoring other subjects like history, geography and math. A police team was escorting the new teachers to the school today when students blocked the road and clashes erupted.
The deceased has been identified as Rajesh Sarkar (21 yrs), a former student of the school. Sarkar was doing a diploma course in Islampur ITI, as per report. Sarkar suffered fatal bullet injuries in the back to chest and was declared dead on arrival at the Islampur hospital.
The police claimed that the protestors pelted stones and even hurled crude bombs at them when they tried to remove the blockade. In order to disperse the mob, they had to resort to lathicharge, lob teargas shells and rubber bullets, said the police.
The police, albeit, denied firing bullets at students. But, police kept silence on whose bullet killed the student and fatally injured another ex student of Darivit High School being treated in North Bengal Medical College. The name of the student divulges as Tapas Barman**.
A source in ABVP, the student wing of RSS, connected with BJP told HENB that the deceased student Rajesh Sarkar was an ‘executive committee member of ABVP of Uttar Dinajpur District’.
Some girl students complained police abuse and molestation in the odd of incident.
Hours after the clashes, considerable tension still prevailed in the area.
While CPIM Leader and MP of Islampur, Mohammad Selim described the incident as shocking and utter humiliation in the educational system in the state; the BJP State president Dilip Ghosh narrated the incident as a total lawlessness in the state under TMC ruling.
However, a District TMC leader hinted a BJP’s hand to infuriate the students picking up the issue of Urdu in a very communal line.
The BJP has called for Islampur bandh (dawn to dusk) in the area tomorrow on Friday.
In a protest, SFI called a students’ protest day on Saturday throughout West Bengal.
** As per update sent by our reporter from Islampur, Tapas Barman, one ex student of Darivit High School (presently was an under graduate student of Islampur College) succumbed his bullet injury in the early morning of Friday (21/09/2018) at North Bengal Medical College in Siliguri.
The death toll for Islampur Student agitation touched to two. The Friday Bandh called by BJP and School Bandh called by ABVP in Islampur and adjacent places in Uttar Dinajpur showed its impact on public life.
