Upendra Bharti | HENB | Dehradun | Dec 25, 2022:: In Uttarakhand activists of a Hindutva organizations disrupted a Christmas program for alleged conversion in a fraudulent way. In the name of 25^th December mass there was a plan to covert more Hindu people into Christianity. Due to this, there has been a stir in Uttarkashi and in this case the police have arrested six people including the head of the church.

According to reports, more than 30 Hindutva activists of many organizations attacked a Christmas event in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, alleging that they were being converted. This time, some people who came to the Christmas program were also beaten up. Apart from this, there was a lot of fighting between the people who had come for the Christmas program and the crowd. After getting information about this incident, the police rushed to the spot and intervened in the matter and settled the dispute. The video of this shocking incident is also going viral on social media.

 As per reports, residents of Purola village in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district on Friday alleged that a forced conversion was being carried out by a Christian organisation.

The villagers allege that a large number of people gathered for “conversion.”

A total of 12 Nepal residents and some locals had gathered at an under-construction building of the Christian centre ahead of Christmas celebrations.

There was a fierce dispute between the villagers and the organisers of the event over a suspected case of forced religious conversion.

The residents raised slogans and called for action against those involved in the alleged conversion row.

Police later detained six people, including Pastor Lazarus Cornelius and his wife Sushma Cornelius who were attacked by the men claiming to be from some Hindu organisations, and were later released saying the matter has been amicably resolved.

The protest at Hope and Life Centre in the village, around 150 km from state capital Dehradun, took place around noon. The pastor belongs to Union Church, Mussoorie, was leading prayers.

After this incident, the administration has deployed a large number of police forces at various places in the city during the Christmas festival. Apart from this, the chief minister of the state has taken cognizance of this matter and has ordered the administration to take necessary measures.

Police registered a cross FIR in connection with the attack by a group of people, alleging forced conversion at a Christmas program in Purola village. FIR registered on the complaint of both parties & the police are probing the matter, said Uttarakhand DGP.

The protesting Hindu Organisations submitted a memorandum addressed to the Governor Gurmit Singh, demanding action. The governor recently gave his assent to the Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Bill passed by the state assembly on November 30 making unlawful conversion a cognisable and non-bailable offence punishable with a maximum of 10 years’ imprisonment besides a fine.

Chief Minister Dhami said the sole purpose of bringing the Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Act is to deal sternly with people who indulge in in forceful conversions.

“We brought in a stronger anti-conversion legislation solely to take stern action against those who force religious conversions by intimidating people or luring them. In this particular case also we will act toughly,” he said.
