Samarpita Roy | HENB | New Delhi | Feb 2, 2025:: The largest Hindu temple in the Southern Hemisphere has opened today on Sunday in Johannesburg, South Africa. This massive temple and cultural complex, developed by the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, spans over 37,000 square meters and features a 2,500-square-meter temple intricately crafted with traditional Indian architecture.
The temple was inaugurated with a grand ceremony, attended by thousands of devotees, and was led by 92-year-old spiritual leader Mahant Swami Maharaj, who traveled from India for the occasion. The complex will serve as a hub for faith, education, and community service, promoting Hindu principles and values.
Some of the key features of the temple include:
– Cultural Center: A vast cultural center dedicated to learning and social upliftment.
– Sustainability: Eco-friendly construction practices prioritizing water efficiency, solar readiness, and environmental conservation.
– Community Services: The complex will host various courses in art, dance, language, and faith, as well as house BAPS charities.
This iconic temple is expected to become a significant cultural and spiritual landmark in South Africa, promoting intercultural dialogue, exchange, and community engagement.

Despite Hindus making up less than 2% of South Africa’s population, Hinduism is the predominant faith among the country’s Indian community. Thousands of devotees gathered before dawn to participate in consecration rituals, led by 92-year-old Mahant Swami Maharaj, the spiritual head of BAPS, who traveled from India for the occasion.
According to Hemang Desai, a BAPS spokesman, the organization aims to establish the site as a hub for intercultural and inter-religious dialogue, exchange, and prayer. The temple complex, described as the largest Hindu cultural complex in the Southern Hemisphere, will offer various courses in art, dance, language, and faith, catering to the diverse linguistic needs of the South African Hindu community. Additionally, the site will house BAPS charities.
The location was chosen due to Johannesburg’s existing large Hindu following and the growing number of expat Hindus moving to the region. The temple’s inauguration was preceded by a vibrant Nagar Yatra procession, featuring devotional music, marching bands, and dancers, led by dozens of monks.
