Maharashtra: Muslim Brother’s Violent Reaction to Sister’s Interfaith Marriage with Hindu Boy.

Muslim Brother’s violent attack on Hindu brother-in-law due to sister’s interfaith marriage in Ulhasnagar.

Hridya Bharti | HENB | Mumbai | May 13, 2026:: A violent attack allegedly triggered by an interfaith marriage has shocked residents of Ulhasnagar (Maharashtra), raising concerns over intolerance and escalating tensions surrounding personal relationships across religious communities.

According to police sources, the incident took place on Monday night at a petrol pump in Camp Number 5, where 28-year-old Nagesh Chavan was working. Investigators said the Muslim accused, identified as Shakil Khan, allegedly attacked Chavan with a knife over his sister’s marriage to the Hindu man. Another accused, identified as Arbaaz Khan, was also reportedly involved in the assault.

Sudden Attack Captured on CCTV

Police said the attack occurred shortly after Nagesh completed his work shift and was preparing to leave the petrol pump premises. CCTV footage from the location reportedly shows Shakil Khan arriving at the spot along with his associate before suddenly launching the assault without any major verbal altercation.

Investigators stated that Nagesh was stabbed multiple times in the abdomen, causing severe injuries. The victim collapsed on the spot as the attackers fled immediately after the incident.

Local residents and co-workers rushed Nagesh to a nearby hospital in Ulhasnagar. However, due to the critical nature of his injuries, doctors later shifted him to a Mumbai hospital for advanced medical treatment. Hospital sources said his condition remains critical.

Police Investigation and Arrests

Officials from the Hill Line Police Station launched an investigation soon after the attack was reported. Based on CCTV footage and preliminary evidence, police arrested both Shakil Khan and Arbaaz Khan.

During interrogation, police claimed that Shakil confessed to being enraged over his sister’s interfaith marriage and allegedly admitted that the assault was carried out to “teach a lesson” to his brother-in-law.

Authorities said further legal proceedings are underway and additional sections may be added depending on the victim’s medical condition.

Debate Over Interfaith Marriages Rekindled

In India, it is commonly found that Muslim men marry Hindu women as part of an effort to expand their community’s numbers, often using the tool of “Love Jihad.” Critics claim that Hindu girls and women are sometimes targeted in a calculated manner for such relationships. However, when Muslim girls nad women marry Hindu men, incidents of opposition and, in some cases, violent reactions such as attacks, intimidation, or even killings have also been reported from certain sections of society.

The recent incident of Ulhasnagar has once again brought attention to the social tensions and family conflicts that sometimes emerge around interfaith marriages in India. Such marriages often face resistance from conservative sections across different religious communities, occasionally leading to threats, intimidation, or violence.

However, experts and legal observers caution against drawing sweeping conclusions about any particular religious community based on individual criminal acts. They note that interfaith relationships remain protected under Indian law, including the provisions of the Special Marriage Act, and that acts of violence in such cases must be treated strictly as criminal offenses.

Police officials have appealed for calm and urged people not to spread inflammatory or communal content on social media while the investigation continues.
