‘Ghar Wapsi Utsav’ Marks National Purification Day; Five People Re-enter Hindu Faith in Solapur.

Upendra Bharti | HENB | Mumbai | August 4, 2026:: A special Ghar Wapsi Utsav (Homecoming Festival) was organized in Solapur on the occasion of National Purification Day  (Rashtriya Suddhikaran Diwas), during which five individuals voluntarily re-entered the Hindu faith through traditional purification rituals. The programme, jointly organised by the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti and the Hindu Rashtra Sena, was held at the Lotus Multipurpose Hall in Ashok Chowk and commemorated what organisers described as the 350th anniversary, according to the traditional Hindu calendar, of the purification and re-entry into Hinduism of Netaji Palkar, the second Commander-in-Chief (Sar-Senapati) of Hindavi Swarajya under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

According to the organisers, the event was inspired by a historical episode in which Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj facilitated the re-entry of his trusted military commander, Netaji Palkar, into the Hindu faith after he had embraced another religion under difficult circumstances. Organisers described this act as an enduring example of social acceptance and religious restoration, stating that it laid the foundation for a tradition of welcoming individuals who voluntarily seek to return to their ancestral faith.

Speaking on the occasion, Sunil Ghanvat of the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti said the programme was conducted to honour this historical legacy and to encourage awareness about the concept of Shuddhikaran (purification) and voluntary Ghar Wapsi. He stated that five individuals in Solapur, who had previously adopted other religions, chose of their own free will to formally re-enter the Hindu fold through the prescribed religious rituals conducted during the event.

Netaji Palkar’s Historic Shuddhi

Netaji Palkar, the celebrated Sarnaubat (Commander-in-Chief) of the Maratha Empire and one of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s most trusted generals, shared not only a close military association with the Maratha ruler but also a familial bond through marriage. Historical accounts note that Shivaji Maharaj’s daughter, Kamalabai, was married to Janoji Palkar, the son of Netaji Palkar, further strengthening the ties between the two families. After Netaji Palkar was captured by the Mughals and, according to historical records, compelled to convert to Islam under Aurangzeb’s rule, he eventually returned to the Maratha kingdom seeking readmission into his ancestral faith. On June 19, 1676, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj authorised a formal shuddhi (purification) ceremony, welcoming Netaji Palkar and his family back into the Hindu fold. The event is widely regarded as a landmark episode in Maratha history, symbolising religious reintegration, social acceptance, and Shivaji Maharaj’s commitment to restoring those who voluntarily sought to return to their ancestral faith.

Observance of National Purification Day

The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti appealed to Hindus across the country to observe the day as National Purification Day, describing it as an occasion to remember historical efforts aimed at restoring members of the community who wished to return to their ancestral faith.

Ghanvat also referred to the life of Dharmveer Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, stating that the Maratha ruler endured severe persecution but refused to renounce his faith. He said Sambhaji Maharaj’s sacrifice continues to inspire efforts aimed at preserving religious identity and cultural heritage.

Religious and Social Leaders Address Gathering

Several religious and social leaders addressed the gathering and spoke about the historical and cultural significance of Ghar Wapsi. Among those who guided the participants were Ravi Gone of the Hindu Rashtra Sena, social analyst Sarvesh Mehendale, Mahant Mavjinath Maharaj of Shrikshetra Tuljapur, and Prasad Pandit, the presiding religious authority of Pragyapuri Gyanpeeth.

The speakers emphasised the importance of preserving civilisational traditions, strengthening cultural awareness, and ensuring that individuals wishing to return to their ancestral faith are welcomed through peaceful and voluntary religious ceremonies.

Historical Legacy and Contemporary Relevance

Organisers said the programme sought to connect a historical event associated with the Maratha era with contemporary discussions on religious identity and cultural continuity. They maintained that the observance was intended to commemorate the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Netaji Palkar while highlighting the principle that individuals should be free to voluntarily return to the faith of their ancestors.

The event concluded with religious rituals, blessings from spiritual leaders, and a call by the organisers for wider public observance of National Purification Day in the years ahead.
