Shut Down Jamia Millia if Anti-Hindu, Anti-National Activities Persist.

Why Has the Authority Not Shut Down the Allegedly Anti-Hindu, Anti-National Activities at Jamia Millia Islamia University?

Upendra Bharti | HENB | New Delhi | Oct 24, 2026:: The Congress-affiliated student organisation, the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), and the leftist student organisation, the All India Students’ Association (AISA), are staging protests and a hunger strike at Jamia Millia Islamia University, demanding the commencement of student union elections.

Attention should be drawn to the slogans reportedly painted on the university walls during the agitation, as they raise questions about the political and ideological direction advocated by the groups involved.

The first slogan reads: “Bring Back Islam.”

Critics interpret this slogan as a call for the revival of Islamic rule in India. They argue that it evokes historical figures such as Aurangzeb and Babur and raises concerns about the implications of such rhetoric for India’s civilisational and national identity.

The second slogan reads: “Free Kashmir.”

Critics contend that this slogan raises questions about the protesters’ position on Kashmir’s integration with India. They interpret it as support for Kashmir’s separation from India, either in favour of Pakistan or as an independent state. They also argue that such demands disregard the sacrifices made by Indian soldiers in defending the country’s territorial integrity.

The third slogan reads: “Free Sharjeel Imam.”

Sharjeel Imam has faced allegations related to speeches calling for the disruption of essential transport links between the northeastern states and the rest of India. He has also been accused in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots. Demands for his release have therefore drawn criticism from those who view his political rhetoric as a threat to national unity. However, the legal status of the cases against him and the allegations involved must be distinguished from any established judicial findings.

The fourth slogan reads: “Kill the RSS/ABVP.”

If accurately reported, this slogan raises serious concerns about the use of violent language against the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Critics argue that such rhetoric reflects hostility towards organisations associated with Hindutva and those advocating Hindu interests.

The reported slogans have prompted concerns about the political and ideological atmosphere on the university campus. Critics argue that slogans advocating religious revivalism, Kashmir’s separation from India, the release of controversial political activists, or violence against rival organisations warrant serious scrutiny.

However, it remains important to establish the authenticity and context of the slogans and determine who was responsible for displaying them. Any allegations of unlawful activity should be investigated impartially and in accordance with the law.

No Police Acrion?

If no police action has been taken despite credible evidence of threats or other unlawful conduct, the Delhi Police should examine the matter and take appropriate action. Universities must uphold freedom of expression while ensuring that their campuses do not become spaces for threats, incitement to violence, or activities that violate the law.

The authorities must act firmly against any unlawful or violent activities on the Jamia Millia Islamia campus. Allegations of communal hostility or attempts to undermine national unity should be investigated on the basis of evidence, with accountability ensured wherever violations are established.
