Sankirtan Das | HENB | Berhampore | Aug 5, 2026: On Tuesday evening, August 4, 2026, during the Hanuman Aarti at the Hanuman Temple in Berhampore (Near Mohan Mall), Murshidabad (West Bengal), members of a Muharram Challisha procession (marking 40 days since Muharram) allegedly attempted to incite communal tension. According to the inputs, the procession participants brandished weapons, attempted to disrupt the temple’s worship rituals, hurled verbal abuses, played loud DG music, and engaged in self-flagellation near the temple premises.
The inputs further allege that aggressive elements in the Muharram Challisha procession attempted to disrupt the recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa and the distribution of prasad, thereby creating a communally charged atmosphere.
Smt. Piku Lahiri Chatterjee, a woman office-bearer of the organization Bharat Raksha Manch, objected to the alleged disruption. She, along with other members of the organization, subsequently lodged a formal complaint at the local police station, which reportedly helped prevent the situation from escalating into a communal riot.
According to available reports, 28 individuals allegedly involved in the incident have been detained by the police.
Timely police intervention is reported to have prevented the alleged attempt to trigger large-scale communal violence in Berhampore.
The police investigation into the incident is currently ongoing.
