Hindu Resistance Grows Against Jihadi Expansion in Nepal.

Communal Violence Between Hindus and Muslims Grips Southern Nepal.

Upananda Brahmachari | HENB | New Delhi | Aug 7, 2026:: Several towns in southern Nepal remain on edge after days of communal violence between Hindu and Muslim communities. The unrest began last week following a dispute over an annual Hindu religious procession in the Sunsari district, near the Indian border.

Communal unrest erupted in southern Nepal in late July 2026 after a dispute between Hindu and Muslim groups over a religious procession in the Sunsari district. The clashes resulted in at least three deaths, dozens of injuries, and the enforcement of curfews by security forces, prompting Prime Minister Balendra Shah to appeal for calm.

Background and Context

The Trigger:
The clashes began on July 26, 2026, in Dewanganj, Sunsari district, during the annual Hindu Bolbam procession following disputes over loud music and the display of religious flags. It was nothing but Muslim hooliganism unleashed against a peaceful Hindu procession (the Shravani Kanwar Yatra) to demonstrate Islamic strength in Nepal. However, Hindus responded firmly, confronting the Muslim hooligans and retaliating forcefully.

Spread of Unrest:
The violence and tensions spread to several other districts in Nepal’s southern plains (the Madhes region), including Sarlahi, Dhanusha, Siraha, and Saptari.

Government Response:
Authorities, with support from the Nepal Army, deployed additional security personnel and imposed strict curfews to contain the violence. Prime Minister Balendra Shah addressed the nation, urging restraint and warning against the spread of communal hatred, hate speech, and unverified rumours on social media.

Misinformation and Social Media Rumours

Several viral videos circulating online have falsely linked old or unrelated footage—including videos from incidents in Bangladesh—to the ongoing communal violence in Nepal, claiming they depict targeted anti-Muslim attacks.

Independent fact-checking organisations and official authorities have urged the public to ignore unverified claims, inflammatory content, and fabricated ultimatums circulating on social media platforms, warning that such misinformation could further inflame communal tensions.

Growing Hindu Resistance and Cultural Concerns

The recent communal unrest has also drawn attention to a growing section of Nepal’s Hindu community, which argues that the violence should be viewed against the backdrop of broader concerns over preserving the country’s traditional Hindu identity. Hindu organisations and activists have expressed apprehension over what they describe as the rapid expansion of Islamic religious infrastructure in parts of the Terai and other southern districts, citing the construction of large mosques, the establishment of Islamic seminaries, and religious congregations attended by foreign Islamic clerics. They have also alleged that incidents of public cow slaughter—an act regarded as deeply offensive by many Hindus because of the cow’s sacred status—have heightened communal sensitivities and contributed to social tensions. These groups contend that such developments have prompted increasing Hindu mobilisation aimed at protecting Nepal’s Hindu-majority cultural heritage and religious traditions. However, these assertions remain matters of political and social debate, and authorities have urged all communities to refrain from inflammatory rhetoric and to resolve disputes through lawful and peaceful means.

Although various media outlets, including the Islamist broadcaster Al Jazeera, sought to portray the entire episode as a Hindutva uprising in Nepal, it is clear to its supporters that many Hindus in Nepal view these events as part of a movement toward restoring Nepal as a Hindu Rashtra, while resisting what they describe as anti-Hindu jihadist and evangelist forces that they believe are actively operating in the country.
