Upendra bharti | HENB | New Delhi | Aug 26, 2026:: A video circulating widely on social media has sparked controversy in Canada after it allegedly shows Ron Banerjee, a Toronto-based Hindu nationalist activist known for his outspoken criticism of Islam, confronting an elderly Muslim man at Yonge-Dundas Square in downtown Toronto.
According to posts circulating online, the elderly man was at the busy public square distributing copies of the Quran when Banerjee approached and confronted him. The footage has since been shared across social-media platforms, prompting sharply divided reactions.
The available social-media reports describe the incident as harassment of the elderly man. However, the precise circumstances surrounding the confrontation, including whether any physical assault occurred, could not be independently established from reliable news reports reviewed for this story. It would therefore be premature to characterize the incident as a physical “attack” without further confirmation.
Ron Banerjee is a familiar figure in Toronto-area controversies involving Islam and Muslim religious practices. He has for years identified himself with Canadian Hindu advocacy and has participated in protests concerning Muslim religious accommodation.
In 2011, CityNews reported that Banerjee organized a protest against Muslim Friday prayers at Valley Park Middle School in Toronto. At the time, he argued that allowing Muslim students to pray at the school amounted to preferential treatment. The Toronto District School Board defended the arrangement as a religious accommodation for its predominantly Muslim student population.
Banerjee was again at the centre of controversy in 2012 when he became associated with efforts to screen the controversial anti-Islam film Innocence of Muslims in Toronto. CityNews reported that other mainstream Hindu organizations had distanced themselves from his views and said they did not represent mainstream Canadian Hindu opinion.
Banerjee’s confrontational rhetoric toward Muslims has previously resulted in legal controversy.
In 2018, he apologized to Toronto-area restaurateur Mohamad Fakih after making defamatory and disparaging remarks about Fakih and his restaurant, Paramount Fine Foods. Global News reported that Banerjee acknowledged in a video apology that his comments were wrong and that he should not have attacked Fakih because of his religion or where he came from.
The Pointer reported that the settlement included a confidential payment and a $100,000 consent judgment that could apply if Banerjee made similar statements about Fakih or his business in the future.
Banerjee has also previously been documented in connection with a physical confrontation at a Toronto-area protest. The Canadian Anti-Hate Network reported in 2021 that Banerjee was present during a violent confrontation at a demonstration and alleged that video showed him punching a demonstrator.
The latest video has revived debate over Banerjee’s conduct in public spaces and the boundaries between political or religious expression and harassment.
Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Square is one of the city’s most prominent public gathering spaces, where political demonstrations, religious outreach and public advocacy frequently take place. Any confrontation involving religious activists therefore has the potential to attract significant public attention.
At present, the circulating footage should be treated as evidence of a confrontation rather than definitive proof of a physical assault. Further information from the Toronto Police Service, witnesses or the individuals involved would be necessary to establish exactly what occurred.
The incident nevertheless comes against the backdrop of Banerjee’s long history of public disputes involving Islam and Muslim religious practices in the Greater Toronto Area.
Ron Banerjee has long criticized Islam and the public distribution of the Quran, which he describes as a source of conflict between Muslims and non-Muslims and as a text that can inspire jihadist ideology. He argues that passages concerning jihad and relations with non-Muslims contribute to hostility towards non-Muslims. These are Banerjee’s stated views, and they remain contested by fanatic Muslims and blind-faith Islamic scholars, who reject his interpretation.
Against this backdrop, the latest confrontation at Yonge-Dundas Square has drawn attention because the elderly Muslim man was reportedly distributing copies of the Quran when Banerjee confronted him. The incident is consistent with Banerjee’s longstanding opposition to what he regards as the public propagation of Islamic teachings. However, the available footage establishes a confrontation but does not, by itself, establish that Banerjee physically assaulted the man.
