Hindu Tamil Rights Activists arrested in Sri Lanka for highlighting Genocide & Disappearances.

Posted by hinduexistence on March 15, 2014

Tamil Rights Activists belonging to their Hindu Roots are facing utter humiliation and persecution in Sri Lanka.

Kilinochchi Disappearances Activist and her 13 Year Old Daughter arrested after Hours Of Interrogation.

Hindu Tamil Activists under ArrestHindu Existence Special Correspondent | Ontario – Canada | 14 March 2014:: Activist groups in Sri Lanka are now confirming that a Tamil widow from Kilinochchi, a Kilinochchi Disappearances Activist named Balendran Jeyakumari and her 13 year old daughter named Vidushika  have been arrested by police investigators following a five hour raid on their home at Dharmapuram last evening. Both of them are reportedly being held in Vavuniya.

Reports that Balendran Jeyakumari a prominent campaigner for families of the disappeared in the Kilinochchi District and her daughter were being detained inside her home which is in the Indian Housing scheme broke late afternoon yesterday (13th March). Balendran Jeyakumari and kumari Vidushika hail rom their traditional orthodox Tamil Shaiva faith. And the persecutor Sri Lankan Govt. is oppressing all these Hindu activists in their faith of fake Buddhist faith. The ruling Govt in Sri Lanka is doing all the harmful activities against humanity just violating all the norms of real preaching of Lord Buddha.

Media and Tamil politician Gajen Ponnambalam reported that Jayakumari’s home had been surrounded by police and armed forces personnel at about 4:30 P.M. on Thursday (13). Ponnambalam and other friends who called Jayakumari on her phone reported that the woman had first answered and that later her phone was snatched away by men claiming to be police, who said there was an investigation under way before switching off the mobile. Neighbours reported the sound of screams and crying by Vithushaini at the home. Media personnel rushing to the scene were not permitted to get close to Jayakumari’s residence, with police cordoning off the area near her home. For several hours no reports emerged about their whereabouts, although late Wednesday night, Ponnambalam said there were unconfirmed reports Jayakumari and her daughter had been arrested.

Police meanwhile, told reporters in Colombo that one policeman had been injured in an attack when a team of police personnel was attempting to arrest a suspected Ex-LTTE cadre in Kilinochchi. Police Spokesman Ajith Rohana told the BBC on Thursday that the suspect had been in a house in which there were two women who were now being investigated. More unconfirmed reports are emerging about further police casualties.

Jayakumari and her daughter Vithushaini are familiar faces in disappearances protests and were heavily photographed during the missing peoples’ protest in Jaffna when British Prime Minister David Cameron visited the area during CHOGM in November last year. Jayakumari had four children – two sons were killed in the war and a third went missing after she handed him over to the military in May 2009. Her 13 year old daughter is her last remaining child. Both Jayakumari and her daughter handed over documents of their family members last whereabouts and information to Channel 4′s Jonathan Snow who was mobbed by the demonstrators in Jaffna during Cameron’s visit. Sources said that the two women were being harassed on suspicion of having been informants for the British Broadcaster.

Video of demonstration at Nallur Kovil Jaffna prior to Cameron’s arrival in the North shows Jayakumari and her daughter are in the first row of protesters. Click here to watch the video.

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) protests in the strongest terms for such unjustified arrest of Rights activists.

The TNA is shocked and appalled at the conduct of the authorities in this regard. The high-handed conduct of the government, even while its human rights record is under scrutiny at the current sessions of the Human Rights Council, is illustrative of the government’s disdainful conduct towards the Human Rights Council. The TNA demands that Jeyakumari and Vidushika be produced before a Magistrate forthwith and released. We remain deeply concerned for the safety and well-being of Jeyakumari and Vidushika, particularly given the context of reported widespread sexual violence against women in the Northern Province. We urge the international community to take all possible measures to ensure the safety and release of Jeyakumari and Vidushika.

In last two decades the Tamils of Sri Lanka saw a deadly genocide in a terrific hell, most of the victims of which are Tamil Hindus.

Dalai Lama praised the pattern of Coexistence in Hindu majority India. While he urges China to learn this coexistence, why he is silent about the Hindu-Tamil Genocide in Sri Lanka?

Dalai Lama Asks China to Learn from India’s model of coexistence. But, why he is silent about the Hindu-Tamil Genocide in Sri Lanka, a Buddhist Country?

Chinese intolerance against Buddhists.

Chinese intolerance against Buddhists. Brutal.

Upananda Brahmachari | Shillong | 7 Feb 2014:: On 3rd February in his first holy visit to North Eastern India, the Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness Dalai Lama said, China should learn from India the practice of harmonious co-existence of different people, languages and lifestyles.

“They should learn from India, which has apart from different regions, different people, different languages, different scripts and different lifestyles. Yet they all live harmoniously,” the Dalai Lama said while addressing the sixth convocation ceremony of the Martin Christian Luther University here at Shillong.

The spiritual leader, who visited Meghalaya for the first time since he made India his home, termed his adopted country as “wonderful and very nice” to live in.

He likened the country to the United Nations in its embracing a multi-cultural, multi-racial and multi-religion society, while blaming Chinese hardliners for infusing hatred against people living in Tibet. “We are not seeking separation from China. We belong to China with common interests and common economic development,” HH Dalai Lama emphasized.

“Modern India is multi-cultural, multi-linguistic and multi-racial. It is like the United Nations. I feel the greatness of India. Its people are harmless, and it is an example to the rest of the world as people are living together happily,” the Buddhist spiritual leader and the Nobel Peace laureate said.

Claiming to be a disciple of Gandhi’s principle of non-violence, the spiritual leader said he nursed a hope that India’s “concept of peaceful living” would make a better Asia and in turn make a better world.

“Over 3,000 years ago, India had the concept of Ahimsa (non-violence). Because of that it commands respect,” he said, adding that India was the living example of religious tolerance and culture.

His Holiness Dalai Lama holds the highest position in contemporary Buddhist order, he is the messenger of peace and ahimsha as propounded by lord Buddha and also the Nobel Peace laureate. HH Dalai Lama is also a living founder member of VHP established in 1964. We never put any question about his honor and wisdom to shower the peace and good to the mankind.

After reaching Bharat on 30 March 1959 at Bomdila (Arunachal Pradesh) he felt secured in his life long exile after being thwarted  from his seat of Tibet by the then tyrannic Communist Govt of China.

Sri Lankan genocide against Tamil-Hindus. Barbaric.

Sri Lankan genocide against Tamil-Hindus. Barbaric.

In his long experience of exile in India, His Holiness Dalai Lama definitely perceives the greatness and generosity of Bharat and her people. And HH Dalai Lama must not disagree that this coexistence, harmony, liberty and the trend of respects to others are only possible as the majority people here have granted this unique and imparallel culture as a basic tenets of Hindu faith and life-style. And for this Hindu spirituality and majority everybody can stay, grow and glow in a very Hindu environment. Any challenge or charter against this Hinduness of this land can move this country towards an Islamic fatal, Christian debacle or a Communist blaze without any option.

But, never could I remember any statement HH Dalai Lama to protect this Hinduness of this land under attack in the recent past.

The Dalai Lama went to Shillong to attend a function of a Christian College, the authority of which, i.e. the Missionaries and Evangelic groups promote huge conversion of Hindus-Buddhists in North East. Christians have made the major portion of the NE as just opposite to the Indian Culture. The NE Christian people do tolerate any Hindu or Indian-ness in that region. HH Dalai Lama did not address this important matter to request the Christian missionaries to stop their conversion agenda.

HH Dalai Lama asks China to restore peace and liberty in Tibet through a practice of Indian tradition and culture of coexistence in China.

But, is it not right to be implemented the same practice of Indian coexistence in Sri Lanka too?

Sri Lanka has its Buddha Sasana. And under this Buddha Sasana, it is told a largest genocide of Tamil-Hindus were occurred there through various operations be inhuman ruling parties in SL.

Various International bodies, UN, Amnesty, dignified Tamil bodies and Hindu Existence Forum have condemned the Hindu-Tamil Genocide in SL. But is not a concern of Buddha Sasana, as if.

While HH Dalai Lama speaks against Chaina rightly for making a peaceful coexistence of everybody in Tibet and China, He cannot be silent about Sri Lanka where the simple existence of Tamil-Hindu people are now positioned before the peace canon of Rajapakshe under a very inhumane stand against the non-Buddhist people in Sri Lanka.

HH Dalai Lama please hear the appeal of victimized Tamil-Hindu people of Sri Lanka for sending a strong message to the rulers of Sri Lanka to stop barbaric activities upon the Tamil –Hindu people in SL.

If HH Dalai Lama thinks that Hindu-Buddhist unity is a must to survive these two oldest faiths against the threats of Christianity, Islam and Communism, he must condemn the Hindu-Tamil Genocide in SL and convey the same message of coexistence of Indian pattern to Sri Lankan rulers, as he already conveyed to China.

Before CHOGM, the Largest Hindu Organisation of the World VHP warned Sri Lankan Govt to stop attack on Tamil Hindus and Hindu Temples to avoid ‘counter reaction’.

DAMBULLA HINDU TAMIL KOVIL DEMOLITION

Attack on Hindu Temples in Sri Lanka may invite worldwide Counter reaction by Hindus: Dr Pravinbhai Togadiya, Int. President, VHP.

VHP Staement over Demolition of Hindu Temples in Sri LankaUpananda Brahmachari | New Delhi | 9 Nov 2013::  As Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council) has received complaints from Dr. N. Kumar Guruparan,Western Provincial Councillor and the Deputy Leader of Democratic Peoples’ Front and Spokesman for the Hindu Front of Sri Lanka against demolition of Goddess Bhadrakaali Amman Temple at the historically inhabited Tamil area of Dambulla in Sri Lanka by Government forces  in night of 28th Oct. last, Dr Pravinbhai Togadiya, International President of VHP condemned such attack upon Hindu Temples and Tamil Hindu culture through a strong press statement issued today.

Earlier Dr Guruparan’s reported the following points inviting particular attention:

 1.     Hon’ble Sri Lankan Parliamentarian R. Yogarajan and Dr. N. Kumar Guruparan both appealed to His Excellency Mahinda Rajapakse, President of Sri Lanka, to ensure the safety of the Bhadrakaali Amman Temple at Dambulla;

2.     When Government forces in civilian dress along with the monks went for demolition, the Temple Trustee Smt. Lechhumi Ammah requested them to give time till Wednesday for performance of prescribed religious rites for the closure of the temple. But they did not pay heed to this reasonable request and went ahead with their demolition drive immediately on 28th October, 2013 night. [https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/30-year-old-dambulla-badhrakaali-amman-kovil-completely-demolished-last-night/]

The Hindu Existence Forum also highlighted the demolition of age old Bhadrakaali Kovil (Temple) through a worldwide publicity under its reporting and authenticated video footage under the caption : 30 Year Old Dambulla Badhrakaali Amman Kovil (Hindu Temple) Completely Demolished by Buddhist Fanatics in Sri Lanka.

This press statement has been released by Sri Prashant Hartaltak, Central Secretary, VHP has an immense importance before the commencement of CHOGM in Sri Lanka  on 15-17 Nov 2013.

The press statement deeply expressed its concern over the attack upon Tamil Hindu People by a dint of destroying  Hindu Temple Culture of Sri Lanka.

“During the long civil war hundreds of Hindu temples have been demolished in Sri Lanka. Now the civil war is over. Even in this peace time we are hearing of destruction of Hindu temple which is very disturbing and provoking.” – the statement narrates on.

In a strong protest against the premeditated pulling down of a living Hindu Temple in Sri Lanka, the Working President of VHP Dr Pravinbhai Togadiya said, “Vishva Hindu Parishad is deeply distressed to hear news reports that Mother Goddess Bhadrakaali Amman Temple at the historically inhabited Tamil area of Dambulla in Sri Lanka has been completely demolished and uprooted by design. VHP strongly demands from the Sri Lankan Government authorities that immediate steps be taken to reconstruct and restore the sanctity of the temple.”

Dr Togadiya said, “As both Hindus and Buddhists are brothers in Dharma, we do not expect such offense and transgression from our Buddhist brethren committed on a Hindu place of worship. The message has gone all over the world that Hindu Temple has been demolished by government forces along with Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka. We take serious note of this wrongdoing and request the Government of Sri Lanka to refrain from such sacrilege against Hindu places of worship and ensure that such acts are not repeated in future anywhere in the Island Nation, otherwise the Sri Lankan Government will be responsible if such acts invite counteractions by the Hindus.”

In his strong note Dr Togadiya pointed out the offensive steps so far taken against the Tamil Hindu Culture and the Hindu people in Sri Lanka by an arrogant  Sri Lankan Government and some irresponsible and inhumane Buddhist monk may create counter attacks on the tree of the offenders if not ceased to produce its poisonous fruits further.

As a matter of fact, thousands of Lankan Buddhist people come to Hindu Majority Bharat to visit the holy Buddhist shrines amidst the warm reception of their Hindu counterparts. But, these same Buddhist people do not show any concern to protect the old and heritage Hindu temples in Sri Lanka anyway.

The probable ”counteractions by the Hindus’ as a consecutive chain of agitation against Sinhala tourist or the Buddhist people in general  may vitiate the Hindu-Buddhsit traditional  bondage in this sub-continent. This may be a headache for the Indian delegates reaching CHOGM 2013 in Colombo. Tamil people and political parties have already condemned and protested the participation of Indian Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, in the CHOGM. Some of them pointed out that Dr Singh should follow the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper who has already boycotted CHOGM over the issue of SL Govt’s negation on the probe on killing of 40,000 Tamil civilians by the Sinhala Army in the LTTE wartime.  The estimates of Tamil Hindu Genocides in Sri Lanka by various agencies touch a unbelievable lot of 1,40,000 so far.

Objections raised against removal of deity from Dambulla Bhadrakaali Kovil.

India should boycott CHOGM 2013 in Sri Lanka to protest a mammoth genocide of Hindu Tamils there.

Indian participation at the CHOGM.

Boycott CHOGM 2013 in Sri LankaUK Tamil News | London | 04 May 2013:: The indication that the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, is more likely to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Colombo comes as a relief to Sri Lanka, which is busy putting in the last minute touches to its roads and buildings in preparation for the high-level meeting to be held from 15-17 November.  It will be the first such high-level meeting since the Non Aligned Summit of 1976.

The indication of the Indian Prime Minister’s participation comes despite the heavy pressure brought on the Central Government by Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa Jayaram, is against India’s participation at the CHOGM in Colombo as a protest against Sri Lanka’s many alleged human rights violations against its own people, and the snail’s pace at which the rehabilitation of the North and its efforts at reconciliation following the end of the war more than four years ago, are taking place. These bickerings come at a time when Sri Lanka is leaning heavily on Beijing for funds, and Islamabad for military equipment, and also moral support from the two countries, ostensibly in a tit-for-tat move to spite India.

Of course India does have a grievance in that Sri Lanka, instigated by the hard line constituent parties of the government, has, in the run up to the Northern Provincial Council election and thereafter, seriously considered diluting the powers of Provincial Councils. These powers were devolved on them through the Indo-Lanka Accord-backed 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which also specified the merger of the Northern and Eastern Provinces. The North and East were subsequently de-merged through a Court order.

However that may be, India’s strong ties with Sri Lanka going beyond 2,500 years, and the country maintaining a strong influence in the region, are good enough reasons for that country to attend the important Commonwealth Meeting in Colombo, especially because Sri Lanka will be the chair for the next two years.

SRI LANKA: NO COMMONWEALTH SEAL OF APPROVAL FOR ABUSES.

Canada has decided to boycott the Commonwealth Summit over allegations of human rights violations and war crimes. Reportedly, it is also considering withdrawing its funding to the Commonwealth. In fact its Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, had many months ago openly stated that he would not be attending the meeting in Colombo, and elected to send a low-level delegation instead. Britain has also decided to withdraw funding, but amidst heavy opposition in the country, Prime Minister, David Cameron, will be attending the summit, and will have a tough message for the Sri Lankan Government on the need to make concrete progress in matters such as human rights, reconciliation and political settlement. According to British Foreign Secretary, William Hague, Prime Minister, David Cameron, will also be visiting the North to obtain a first-hand knowledge of what is going on there.

Though the Indian Premier’s attendance is not still confirmed, the new Chief Minister of the North, C.V. Wigneswaran, has sent a letter inviting him to visit the North, which has been misconstrued by some as an invitation to him to attend the CHOGM. However, the Northern Chief Minister’s invitation would be enough excuse to attend the CHOGM in Colombo and preserve India’s stature as South Asia’s most powerful nation.

India must assert its position in the region. It should not lose its clout and let its position be usurped by other countries, especially China and Pakistan, on which the Sri Lankan Government leans heavily at the moment. Therefore India’s decision regarding the Commonwealth Summit in Colombo must be influenced by this reality and not by parochial interests of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, since this involves foreign policy.
India’s Central Government must remain steadfast in making its own decision in this matter and not lose its position as South Asia’s most powerful nation if there is to be peace in the region. [e UK Tamil News. ]

Why International Hindu Community is reluctant about the erasing Hindu Tamil People from Sri Lanka?

Posted by hinduexistence on January 23, 2013

Hindu Tradition in Sri Lanka

Mainly Hindu Tamil Culture in Sri Lanka is facing a notorious Sinhala outrages. Crisis of a diminishing people out of multiple attack of ruling powers.

Sri Lanka erasing Tamil language, culture: Karunanidhi

The Hindu | January 20, 2013 | Chennai :: DMK president M. Karunanidhi has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to take steps to ensure that the Sri Lankan government gave up, what he called, its programme of erasing Tamil language, culture and religion. He sought their help in putting an end to alleged drive by Sri Lankan authorities to rename Tamil villages with Sinhala names.

In identical letters to Dr. Singh and Ms. Gandhi, Mr. Karunanidhi said many more such tactics were being employed by the Sri Lankan government. “Tamils in Sri Lanka are living in an oppressive environment,” he alleged.

Bringing to their notice “disturbing developments” in Sri Lanka vis-à-vis the Tamils, he said: “The Sri Lankan government is now carrying out an intensive and systematic programme of erasing the Tamil language, culture and religion and diluting the concentration of Tamils in areas where they have historically been predominant. This manifests itself in the renaming of Tamil villages, redrawing of village, district and town boundaries, demolishing Hindu temples, non-allocation of funds to resettle and rehabilitate internally displaced Tamil families.”

He said: “The Sri Lankan government is also not allocating funds to schools, hospitals and other infrastructure where the Tamils live predominantly. It is also promoting Sinhala settlements on Tamil land and Sinhalese take over of the economic life of Tamil areas, which impoverishes the Tamils, and the deployment of army camps to intimidate them.” India had a moral obligation to stop this as it involved the eradication of a great culture and ancient religion in our backyard, he said.

Giving details, Mr. Karunanidhi said 89 villages had been renamed with Sinhala terms and 367 Hindu temples had been demolished. There were 148 mini and 13 main army camps in Mullaitivu district alone.

In Amparai district, the Tamil heritage village ‘Potthuvil’ was renamed as ‘Pothuvila’, and ‘Thirukovil’ was renamed as ‘Srikovila’ and ‘Tharavaikulam’ as ‘Tharakkulam’ while ‘Vagarai’ became ‘Vagara’ in Batticalao district and Nilaveli was renamed as Nilvaella, and Alankulam as Gemburuweva in Trincomalee district.

In Jaffna district, Vaddukottaii was renamed as Battakote and Paruththiththurai as Pethuruthoduva, and Nainatheevu as Nagatheeba. With name change, Kilinochchi became Granika, Mullaitivu Mooladoova and Vavuniya, Vannimava, he said.

Sri Lanka: Is Delhi Dumb?

Paper No. 5371| January 20, 2013 | Dr Kumar David | South Asia Analysis Group :: Dumb is used to describe a person who is bereft of brains, and of course its literal meaning is to be deprived of the faculty of verbal articulation.

Not many people fit both definitions at the same time, but the Government in Delhi has managed a Double First! The international community (IC) has expressed itself in no uncertain terms and the governments of the United States, UK, Canada, and even Australia in low key because of other sensitivities, International Commission of Jurists, UNHCR, International Crisis Group, Asian Human Rights Association, Bar Associations of several countries including UK and even Indian newspaper leader writers. There has been universal condemnation and expressions of shock at the flagrant violation of the constitution, an unheard of kangaroo-trial of a Chief Justice (CJ), a witch-hunt, and finally a lynching by Executive President Mahinda Rajapakse and the sycophant parliament that kneels before him. Through it all Delhi has remained brain dead and voiceless!

The common explanation is that India has enough on its plate both internally and with Pakistan and China that is does not want anymore and does not wish to intervene in the internal affairs of a neighbour. This is unacceptable when matters go so much out of hand that the fabric of democracy is ripped and freedom of life and liberty of the people of Lanka imperilled. Don’t take my word for it; here are abbreviated extracts from what an international body located in Geneva, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, with no particular axe to grind on behalf of CJ Shirani Bandaranayke, stated on 18 January.

“The removal of the Chief Justice through a flawed process is gross interference in the independence of the judiciary and a calamitous setback for the rule of law in Sri Lanka. Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayke was served notice of her dismissal and removed from her chambers and official residence on 15 January, in spite of a Supreme Court ruling that the parliamentary procedure to remove her violated the Constitution.  Sri Lanka has a long history of abuse of executive power, and this latest step appears to strip away one of the last and most fundamental of the independent checks and balances.”

The jurist sworn in by the President as the new Chief Justice on 15 January, the former Attorney-General and Legal Advisor to the Cabinet, Mr. Mohan Peiris, has been at the forefront of a number of government delegations to Geneva in recent years to vigorously defend the Sri Lankan government’s position before the Human Rights Council and other human rights mechanisms. This raises obvious concerns about his independence and impartiality, especially when handling allegations of serious human rights violations by the authorities.

Just this morning we have received alarming reports from the Independent Bar of Sri Lanka of a series of death threats, acts of intimidation and even a couple of reported murder attempts against lawyers who have been supporting Chief Justice Bandaranayke, and the rulings of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal on her case”. END QUOTE.

And this is by no means the strongest statement made by international commentators; it seems that the Government of Canada has decided to boycott the Commonwealth Heads meeting scheduled for late this year in Lanka and has been backed by the Canadian Bar Association in the decision.

It would be too repetitive to summarise what has happened in the last four months or to add to the avalanche of criticism. Indian readers will find a good cross section of views and comments and a ball-by-ball commentary of events on the Colombo Telegraph website (www.colombotelegraph.com/). Those who do not have time to go to original sources must take my word for it; flagrant trampling underfoot of the constitution, a rushed, botched “trial” by a parliamentary select committee that violated the norms of natural justice, and a comedy in parliament where a government Minister (Vasudeva Nanayakkara, MP) even shouted “We have told the judiciary to go to hell.”

And why did Rajapakse fling the Chief Justice out? The reason is that when the Divineguma Bill came to the Supreme Court for determination of its constitutionality, a three judge bench presided over by the CJ decided that it was inconsistent with the constitution and would need a 2/3 majority for passage. I discussed the Bill (now enacted) in this column on 26 October 2012 (“Queer happenings in Serendib”; Paper 5265) and pointed out that thereafter 64% of the budget of the Sri Lankan government is controlled by departments and/or ministries under three of the siblings (Mahinda, Basil and Gothabaya Rajapakse). The fourth sibling Chamal Rajapakse, parliamentary speaker, steered the impeachment through the House. His Master’s Voice cabinet ministers have now been instructed to tout his name as the next Prime Minister. Even a hat-trick is not enough for these power gluttons; they want all four top-order slots. >>Read details here.

India must change its Colombo policy, pleads Sri Lankan MP

Chennai | Jan 21, 2013 | (IANS) :: A prominent Sri Lankan MP wants India to change its Sri Lanka policy, warning that its hands off attitude was encouraging Colombo from meeting the legitimate political aspirations of the island’s Tamil minority.

Suresh Premachandran also said in a telephonic interview that the government of President Mahinda Rajapaksa was not sincere in having a dialogue with the elected leaders of the Tamil community.

“One could understand a certain Sri Lanka policy India followed when the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) was there,” the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) member told IANS here.

“Now that the LTTE is no more, India must change its (Sri Lanka) policy,” he said. “Otherwise the Sri Lankan government’s attitude will not change.”

India solidly — both tacitly and openly — backed Colombo when the latter waged war on the LTTE, leading to its destruction in May 2009.

Since then, however, the Rajapaksa government has gone back on some of the promises it made to Indian leaders on pursuing a path of reconciliation with the Tamil community.

And Tamil leaders say that India is not putting enough pressure on Sri Lanka to implement what it told Prime Minister Manmohan Singh including on providing genuine autonomy to Tamil areas.

According to Premachandran, Sri Lanka was emboldened vis-a-vis the democratic world because of the support it gets from China.

“They (the regime) don’t care about the US and Europe, and they say they can manage India too,” said the MP, whose TNA is the main Tamil voice in parliament and which was earlier seen as the LTTE’s political arm. “They feel that with China with them, they can manage the UN too.”  >>Read details here.

Ruins of Hindu Temples in Sri Lanka. Stop this Hindu-Bouddha Clash and State sponsored Terrorism in Sri Lanka.

Hindu Temple destroyed in Sri Lanka in 1983 and onwards.

Input by Kumarathasan Rasingam.

During the state sponsored ethnic cleansing /riots against the Hindu  Tamils in Sri Lanka, hundreds of Hindu Temples  were attacked/destroyed/damaged.  A short list of Hindu Temples attacked or destroyed in 1983 by state sponsored terrorism incited by Sinhala Government.

It is hard to believe that cabinet ministers in Sri Lanka do not know what goes on in the country they govern. They get information from briefings, internal memos and all sorts of other inside sources. In addition they also have access to the numerous, public and private, reports by outsiders. For example, at the March 1998 UNCHR hearing in Geneva, Joaquin Mbomio of North-South XXI, while condemning the attack on the Dalada Maligawa, stated, “some 1,800 Hindu temples have been destroyed by Sri Lanka’s military.”

The ministers might not know the exact number of temples destroyed by their army, but surely must be aware that the number runs in the hundreds…. (Ref : Taliban and the Sinhala Buddhists).

Sri Lanka's Killing Fields

Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields: War Crimes Unpunished

Screened at the UN in Geneva and New York and also shown to politicians at the House of Commons, the European Parliament and key figures in the US Senate, Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields prompted comment from leading political figures around the world, including Prime Minister David Cameron. Yet these war crimes still have yet to be properly investigated or those responsible brought to account – despite UN sources suggesting the Sri Lankan government forces killed up to 40 thousand civilians – perhaps many more in this period.

This powerful follow-up film, also presented by Jon Snow, presents damning new video evidence of war crimes including contemporaneous documents, eye-witness accounts, photographic stills and videos relating to how exactly events unfolded during the final days of the civil war. It investigates who was responsible – the results point to the highest levels of the Sri Lankan government and complicity at the top of the army.

Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields: War Crimes Unpunished forensically examines four specific cases and investigates who was responsible. The cases are: the deliberate heavy shelling of civilians and a hospital in the ‘No Fire Zone’; the strategic denial of food and medicine to hundreds and thousands of trapped civilians – defying the legal obligation to allow humanitarian aid into a war zone; the killing of civilians during the ‘rescue mission’ and the systematic execution of naked and bound LTTE prisoners – featuring new chilling video footage of a 12-year-old boy who has been brutally executed.

Despite pressure from human rights groups and the report by a UN-appointed panel of experts which called for a thorough international investigation into alleged violations of international humanitarian and human rights law, the Sri Lankan government’s internal inquiry, ‘The Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission’ published in December last year, failed to conduct any kind of rigorous investigation into the allegations of war crimes. It specifically denied that any civilians were knowingly targeted with heavy artillery. Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields: War Crimes Unpunished explores the reasons behind the apparent international inaction at the time, in calling the government of Sri Lanka to account.

Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields: War Crimes Unpunished presents shocking new video footage and evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity which trace ultimate responsibility up the highest echelons of the chain of command. This film asks questions of those who still hold the reins of power in Sri Lanka – President Rajapaksa, commander in chief and his brother Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaska – and two former army chiefs who have landed prime diplomatic posts since the war ended and immunity from prosecution.

With the England cricket team set to tour Sri Lanka once again this month and Sri Lanka now confirmed as the venue for the next commonwealth heads of government meeting in 2013, this film is a stark reminder of the terrible suffering of a people who have been failed and forgotten by the international community.

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 14 March 2012, 01:38 GMT]

Even though diffusing, deviating and hijacking the need to address the crux of the crisis in Sri Lanka, the US-tabled resolution at the UNHRC and the associated diplomatic deliberations and muscle-flexing seem to be artfully fixing the onus on India, in lines with the long legacy of Indo-US competition ruining the aspirations of genocide-affected Eezham Tamils. India could seize the opportunity and could come out with alternative righteous options to counter the trap, but the guilty-filled Congress regime is incapable of them. As New Delhi’s stand has been repeatedly proved an impediment to justice in the island and at the same time New Delhi is also not doing anything on its own other than shopping there, the question comes whether removal of the Congress regime is a prerequisite to India’s progress in the region and in world affairs, writes TamilNet political commentator in Colombo. Read more…..

Danilo Reyes program officer from Asian Human Rights Commission (Hong Kong) spoke on the topic of “Accountability in constitutionally entrenched impunity”. He explored whether is it possible to find accountability in a country where violations find impunity from the constitution.   He urged that this has to be combated and addressed if we are to make any progress with respect to accountability in Sri Lanka.
