Manas Das | HENB | Guwahati | June 30, 2023:: Communal tension gripped different places of the Cachar district, including Silchar and Katigorah areas on the day of Bakrid on Thursday, the second biggest festival of Muslims allegedly over the slaughtering of cattle.

According to a senior police official, while a number of people were injured and a few vehicles ransacked in Panchayat Road locality of Silchar City, five persons were arrested in the Siddeshwar locality of Katigorah Circle.

Communal tension broke out in Silchar’s Panchayat Road area on Thursday after a scuffle between Hindus and Muslims in which a few persons were injured. Some vehicles were also vandalized.

According to a section of locals, the tension broke out over the alleged slaughter of a cow inside a Muslim house when the Hindu people of neighbouring areas protested against it.

The situation eventually snowballed into a verbal spat after people from both the communities gathered in huge numbers and it was followed by a brawl in which some people, from both the communities, were injured. Some commuters, including women, were harassed and abused by the locals in the area.

Deputy inspector general (southern range) Kankan Jyoti Saikia and Cachar superintendent of police Numal Mahatto reached the spot with security forces after receiving information of the brawl and brought the situation under control.

Security personnel were deployed in large numbers in the area to prevent escalation of violence. Mahatto said the matter was being investigated to find out the circumstances which led to the scuffle and that lawful action would be taken after the probe was completed. He
appealed to the people to avoid spreading rumours.

According to the report of Barak Bulletin, BJP’s Silchar MLA, Dipayan Chakraborty visited Panchayat Road in the evening yesterday where tension has been mounting since morning following a communal clash between the two communities. MLA Chakraborty wished “Eid Mubarak” to the locals there and condemned the untoward incident that occurred in the morning.

Speaking with Barak Bulletin, MLA Dipayan Chakraborty said, “As per the direction of the Honourable Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, I have visited the spot where some tension broke in the morning. I have assured them that the Police are investigating the matter and justice will be served to both parties while the culprits found guilty will be booked. Police will do their job but let us all maintain peace and tranquility is what I appealed to the people there.”

MLA Chakraborty has also announced that a sum of Rs 5 lakh will be sanctioned for the Panchayat Road, Jame Masjid committee to build a community hall that can be utilized for productive activities or educational purposes.

The local residents of Panchayat Road lauded the efforts put in by Dipayan Chakraborty, MLA of Silchar in order to restore peace and tranquility in the area. “The MLA has sanctioned a fund of Rs 50,000 from his side for immediate work at the Masjid and his gesture today gave us a lot of assurance. We are grateful to the MLA for extending his concerns and support and at the same time, for putting efforts to restore brotherhood,” said a local resident who was present during the visit of the elected representative.
