Ties with Several Hindu Girls: Hindutva Men Thrash Muslim Man in Varanasi to Crack Down on Alleged ‘Love Jihad’ Intentions.

Uttar Pradesh: Muslim Youth Allegedly Assaulted by Hindutva Group in Varanasi Over Crypto Interfaith Relation Concerns.

Upendra Bharti | HENB | Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh | May 17, 2026:: A Muslim youth was allegedly assaulted and publicly humiliated by members of a Hindutva group at Assi Ghat in Varanasi after he was seen in the company of several Hindu girls near the banks of the Ganga, according to reports and viral social media footage that surfaced on Friday. The incident has reignited concerns over  moral policing related to interfaith interactions in Uttar Pradesh.

Viral Video Sparks Outrage

The episode came to public attention after a video of the confrontation circulated widely on social media platforms. In the footage, a group of men can allegedly be seen surrounding the youth, verbally threatening him, and forcing him to apologise with folded hands. The men reportedly compelled him to publicly declare that he would neither speak to nor roam with Hindu girls in the future.

According to local reports, the youth is a resident of Bareilly and had travelled to Varanasi with friends. Members of the Hindutva group accused him and his companions of attempting to establish relationships with Hindu girls through social media under what they described as “Love Jihad” intentions to exploit Hindu girls and women. The term “Love Jihad” is described by some as controversial and politically charged, and is used by certain right-wing groups to allege organised efforts by Muslim men to convert Hindu women through romantic relationships.

Allegations of Police Inaction Leading to Public Vigilantism

Witness accounts and reports suggest that the Hindu group physically assaulted the Muslim youth before publicly humiliating him. He was reportedly released only after complying with the demands of the group.

The incident has once again highlighted the activities of self-styled vigilante groups that monitor and intervene in personal interactions between individuals of different faiths. Civil rights advocates and legal experts have repeatedly expressed concern that such actions amount to unlawful moral policing and can contribute to communal tensions.

Critics say that such vigilantism is a reaction to alleged police inaction despite repeated appeals from Hindu groups to prevent what they describe as the targeting or exploitation of Hindu girls and women by certain Muslim individuals under the alleged “Love Jihad” ploy.

Police Investigation Underway

Police personnel reportedly arrived at the spot after the confrontation and have begun reviewing the viral video footage to identify those involved in the alleged assault. Authorities have not yet released detailed information regarding arrests or legal proceedings connected to the case.

Officials have also not confirmed whether any complaint was formally lodged by the victim or his family at the time of reporting.

Pattern of Similar Incidents in Uttar Pradesh

The Varanasi episode is not an isolated case. In recent months, several incidents involving alleged attacks on interfaith gatherings or friendships have been reported across Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier this year in Bareilly, members of a Hindutva outfit allegedly disrupted a birthday celebration organised by a Hindu woman at a restaurant and assaulted Muslim youths attending the event. Police later registered cases in connection with the disturbance, and some individuals were detained before being released.

Observers note that such incidents often gain traction on social media, where communal narratives and allegations spread rapidly, sometimes intensifying local tensions before official investigations are completed.

Growing Debate Over Interfaith Freedom and Public Safety

The latest incident has renewed debate over the balance between public order, individual freedoms, and the role of vigilante groups in enforcing social or religious norms. Critics argue that moral policing in the name of religion undermines constitutional rights and encourages intimidation in public spaces.

Meanwhile, supporters of anti-“Love Jihad” campaigns claim they are acting to protect Hindu women from alleged coercion or religious conversion, although courts and investigative agencies in several cases have found no organised conspiracy behind such claims.

As the investigation continues, rights groups are calling for strict legal action against those involved in acts of violence and public humiliation, regardless of religious or political affiliations.
