Upananda Brahmachari | HENB | New Delhi | May 16, 2026:: : Tension erupted in West Bengal’s Asansol after a police outpost in the Jahangiri Mohalla area was allegedly attacked by a Muslim mob during an administrative awareness drive regarding loudspeaker regulations at religious places. The violence, which reportedly involved stone pelting and vandalism, led to damage to police property and several vehicles before security forces brought the situation under control.
According to reports, police personnel attached to the Jahangiri Mohalla outpost under the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate had been conducting an awareness campaign in the Railpar area regarding permissible sound limits for loudspeakers used at religious institutions, including mosques and temples.
Sources said the situation became tense when police interacted with local Muslim residents regarding lowering the volume of mosque loudspeakers in accordance with administrative guidelines. During the discussions, a division of opinion reportedly emerged within the local Muslim community.
While one section allegedly agreed to comply with the police directives and maintain the sound level within permissible limits, another section strongly objected, leading to a heated atmosphere in the locality. Officials and residents stated that tensions escalated rapidly following the disagreement.
Soon afterward, a large crowd allegedly gathered near the Kasai Mohalla–Jahangiri Mohalla police outpost. According to local reports and eyewitness accounts, a Muslim mob launched an attack on the outpost using bricks and stones.
Reports further alleged that a significant number of those involved in the violence were minor Muslim boys, who allegedly participated in stone pelting and vandalism during the unrest. However, authorities have not yet officially released details regarding the identities or ages of the accused individuals.
The attackers allegedly damaged portions of the police outpost and vandalised police vehicles, motorcycles, and several private civilian vehicles parked in the vicinity. The violence triggered panic across nearby localities, with residents describing scenes of chaos as tensions spread.
Police later resorted to a lathi charge to disperse the crowd and prevent further escalation of violence. Additional police forces were rushed to the area, and heavy deployment continues in sensitive pockets of Asansol to maintain law and order.
Senior police officials are closely monitoring the situation. Authorities have urged residents not to spread rumours or inflammatory messages and appealed for communal harmony.
Officials stated that the situation is currently under control, though security patrols remain active across the affected areas.
The administration has initiated a large-scale investigation into the incident. CCTV footage from the locality, along with local intelligence inputs, is being examined to identify individuals involved in the attack, vandalism, and stone pelting.
Police officials stated that strict legal action would be taken against those found responsible for attacking public property and disturbing public order.
Local Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillors appealed to residents to maintain peace and cooperate with police directives issued under legal provisions related to sound regulations.
BJP MLA and West Bengal Cabinet Minister Agnimitra Paul visited the affected locality and urged all religious institutions — including temples, mosques, and gurdwaras — to comply with the law and avoid any violation of sound regulations.
Meanwhile, members of the local BJP leadership accused “TMC-backed elements” of contributing to the deterioration of the situation and alleged administrative failure in preventing the attack on the police outpost. No official response from the TMC regarding the allegation was immediately available.
Police and security personnel continue patrolling the affected localities to prevent any fresh flare-up. Authorities have reiterated that maintaining peace and communal harmony remains the administration’s top priority as the investigation progresses.
The incident has intensified debate over the enforcement of loudspeaker regulations and the challenges faced by authorities while implementing administrative directives in communally sensitive regions.
