Sankirtan Das | HENB | Kolkata | May 28, 2026:: The 144th birth anniversary of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, popularly known as Veer Savarkar, was observed in Kolkata on Wednesday through a programme organised by the Hindu Samaj Kalyan Samiti (HSKS). The event brought together several Hindutva figures, writers, researchers, and youth representatives from different districts of West Bengal, with organisers emphasizing ideological mobilisation and cultural consolidation among Bengali Hindu youths.
The programme was held at the Tripura Hitasadhani Sabha Hall near Calcutta University and witnessed the meaningful participation of activists and supporters associated with various Hindu nationalist organisations and initiatives.
Veer Savarkar, born on May 28, 1883, in Bhagur, Maharashtra, remains one of the most debated figures in modern Indian political history. A freedom activist, writer, political thinker, and proponent of Hindutva, Savarkar played a significant role in shaping the ideological framework of Hindu nationalism during the early 20th century. Savarkar Jayanti is annually commemorated by organisations and individuals who regard him as a revolutionary nationalist and social reformer.
According to the organisers, the objective of the Kolkata programme was not merely ceremonial but ideological in nature. Speakers repeatedly stressed the importance of unwavering dedication toward one’s ideals and commitment to serving Hindu society and the nation despite hardship, suffering, humiliation, or adversity. References were also made to Savarkar’s concept of “Atmarpan,” interpreted by participants as the voluntary embrace of death after fulfilling one’s duties with complete dedication.
Several speakers argued that Hindu society often becomes complacent whenever politically favourable governments come to power, warning against what they described as a “Kumbhakarna-like slumber.” The event further featured discussions on perceived geopolitical and ideological threats facing India, with speakers alleging that “Deep State” networks and powerful foreign interests were attempting to conspire against Bharat and its civilisational identity.
Among those present at the event were HSKS President Saurav Shasmal, veteran Hindutva activist and founder of Sankhanaad Samarasat Mission Balkrishna Lundia, and writer and Savarkar researcher Malay Patla.
A major highlight of the programme was the re-release of Malay Patla’s Bengali-language book Atmabismrita Bangalir Savarkar, which explores Savarkar’s ideological influence and his historical connection with Bengal. Organisers noted that the work is also available in Hindi under the title Bangal ke Veer Savarkar. The event additionally marked the Bengali rendering of Savarkar’s Marathi work Moplyanche Band: Arthaat Mala Kay Tyache?, released in Bengali as Mopala – Tate Amar Ki?
Addressing the gathering, Malay Patla spoke extensively on Bengal’s intellectual and revolutionary relationship with Savarkar. He discussed how Savarkar’s ideas influenced strands of revolutionary nationalism in Bengal and elaborated on the ideological slogan associated with Savarkar: “Hinduize the Politics and Militarize the Hindudom.” Patla argued that Bengal’s historical revolutionary spirit shared several ideological parallels with Savarkar’s nationalist vision.
In his address, HSKS President Saurav Shasmal called upon Bengali Hindu youths to align themselves with the ideological doctrines of Veer Savarkar, Syama Prasad Mookerjee, and Tapan Ghosh. He urged young Hindus in Bengal to organise socially and politically in response to what he described as “jihad” and political persecution faced by the Hindu majority community in the state over several decades.
The programme concluded with slogans, discussions among youth participants, and renewed calls by organisers for stronger ideological unity among Bengali Hindus in contemporary political and social discourse.
