Arindam Halder | HENB | Kolkata | June 20, 2026:: West Bengal marked a historic occasion on June 20, 2026, as the state officially observed Paschimbanga Diwas (West Bengal Day) with due significance across schools, government offices, educational institutions, and public establishments in accordance with official directives. The observance commemorated a date regarded by many as a defining moment in the history of Bengal and a turning point in determining the destiny of the Bengali people.
On the occasion, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended their greetings and warm wishes to the people of West Bengal. The celebrations were accompanied by tributes to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, whose role in the creation of West Bengal was highlighted throughout the commemorative events.
According to the state government, this marks the first time in decades that West Bengal Day has been officially observed with full recognition of the historical events surrounding the state’s formation. The government described the observance as the restoration of a significant chapter of Bengal’s history that had allegedly been neglected by previous administrations.
Addressing the occasion, the state government emphasized that June 20 occupies a unique place in Bengal’s historical journey. It maintained that earlier governments had failed to adequately acknowledge the importance of the day and the contributions of the leaders who played pivotal roles in ensuring the creation of West Bengal as a part of India. The present administration stated that the official observance seeks to reconnect the people, especially younger generations, with the state’s historical roots and foundational struggles.
Central to the celebrations was the remembrance of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, whose leadership during the tumultuous period preceding India’s independence was described as instrumental in securing the formation of West Bengal. Government speakers and participants paid tribute to his efforts in opposing proposals that would have placed the entirety of undivided Bengal within Pakistan.
According to historical accounts highlighted during the observance, Dr. Mookerjee’s political leadership, organizational efforts, and vision played a crucial role in mobilizing support for the creation of a separate province that would remain within India. State officials stated that without his intervention, the future of Bengali culture, language, and identity might have faced grave challenges.
Tributes were also paid to Swami Pranavananda Maharaj, the founder of Bharat Sevashram Sangha, along with numerous distinguished leaders and members of the then Bengal Legislative Assembly whose contributions were recognized as vital in shaping the state’s future. Speakers noted that their collective efforts provided what was described as a secure homeland for millions of Bengalis during a period of profound uncertainty.

In a message shared on Facebook, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari reiterated the state’s gratitude toward these historical figures. He stated that Bengal owed an “unrepayable debt” to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, Swami Pranavananda Maharaj, and all those who worked to ensure that West Bengal remained an integral part of India. He further observed that their historic decisions safeguarded the cultural, linguistic, and civilizational heritage of the Bengali people.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a message addressed to the Chief Minister, also underscored the significance of June 20 in the history of West Bengal. He congratulated the Government of West Bengal for formally recognizing the day as the state’s foundation day and stated that the initiative would help strengthen the historical consciousness of younger generations.

The Prime Minister noted that June 20 commemorates a democratic decision that preserved West Bengal’s distinct linguistic, cultural, and civilizational identity within India. He described it as a moment when history stood at a crossroads and credited visionary leadership with ensuring that millions retained their enduring connection with India. Referring to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, he stated that the leader’s contribution deserved respectful remembrance for articulating the aspirations of those who wished to remain within India during a period of uncertainty and political upheaval.
The Prime Minister further recalled the historic developments of June 20, 1947, when representatives from the western districts voted in favor of the partition of Bengal, thereby paving the way for the creation of West Bengal within the Indian Union.
Adding to the day’s significance, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation announced the renaming of Suhrawardy Avenue as Gopal Mukherjee Road in honor of the late Gopal Mukherjee. The decision was welcomed by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who described it as a historic step recognizing an important figure associated with Bengal’s past.
A major highlight of the celebrations took place in Tarakeswar, where West Bengal Day was observed in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The location carried special historical symbolism due to its association with the Tarakeswar Sammelan of the Bangiya Hindu Mahasabha, held between April 4 and April 7, 1947.
Historical references presented during the event recalled that the conference was led by Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee and presided over by Nirmal Chandra Chatterjee. It was at this gathering that a resolution was adopted advocating the creation of a separate Hindu-majority province to be known as West Bengal. Supporters of the observance described the conference as a landmark event that contributed significantly to the eventual formation of the state.
Throughout the day, commemorative programs, discussions, cultural events, and tribute ceremonies were organized across the state. Participants reflected on the sacrifices and decisions that shaped modern West Bengal while reaffirming a collective commitment to building a secure, prosperous, and progressive future.
As the celebrations concluded, state leaders emphasized that West Bengal Day is not merely a remembrance of historical events but also an occasion to honor the vision, determination, and sacrifices of those who played a role in securing the state’s place within India. They called upon citizens to draw inspiration from these historical figures and work toward realizing a stronger and more prosperous West Bengal in the years ahead.
The observance of Paschim Banga Diwas witnessed enthusiastic participation across numerous educational institutions throughout West Bengal. Reports from various districts indicated that schools organized special programs to commemorate the historic occasion and educate students about the significance of June 20 in the state’s history.

In South 24 Parganas district, both Ramgarhat High School and Jamtala Higher Secondary School observed the day with special events. At Jamtala Higher Secondary School, a drawing competition was organized, encouraging students to creatively express their understanding of Paschim Banga Diwas and Bengal’s historical heritage. Meanwhile, Ramgarhat Higher Secondary School hosted an elocution competition centered on the theme of Paschim Banga Diwas, where students delivered speeches highlighting the historical importance of the formation of West Bengal and the contributions of the leaders associated with the movement.

In Kolkata, a number of commemorative programs and public meetings were organized to mark West Bengal Day. Among the most significant was an event arranged by Bengal Volunteers at the historic Tripura Hitasadhani Sabha Griha in College Square. The gathering attracted scholars, social activists, and members of various organizations interested in preserving and promoting Bengal’s historical legacy.
The program featured addresses by veteran Hindu Mahasabha leader Subhas Chakraborty, Upananda Brahmachari, Editor of Hindu Existence, Bengal Volunteers leader Animitra Chakrabortyand, and Swami Shraddhananda of Sonatani Ashram of Betberia. The speakers highlighted the historical circumstances that led to the creation of West Bengal and emphasized the importance of preserving awareness of this chapter of Bengal’s history among future generations.
Two books in Bengali were also released at the Bengal Volunteers programme. The first was Singhopurush Shyamaprasad by Pankaj Samaddar, and the second was Khoma? Kake Khoma? (a poetry collection) by Parthasarathi Chattopadhyay. Copies of War Journal: Ameyavikrama, the annual publication of Bengal Volunteers, were also displayed and sold in significant numbers at the programme.
A notable aspect of the event was the presence of descendants of Hindu Veer Gopal Mukhopadhyay and the legendary Anushilan Samiti revolutionary Pulin Behari Das. During the program, participants paid tribute to the individuals and organizations whose efforts contributed to the creation of West Bengal and reflected upon the historical movement that sought to secure a homeland for Bengali Hindus within India.
Smt. Dolon Chakraborty enchanted the audience by reciting a poem on Paschim Banga Diwas written by Parthasarathi Chattopadhyay.
The event concluded with a collective reaffirmation of the need to preserve historical memory and to continue educating younger generations about the events, leaders, and movements that shaped the formation of modern West Bengal.
