Warning of Self-Immolation Over Encroachment on Deoria Ramlila Ground; Admin Assures Action.

Threat of Self-Immolation Over Encroachment on Historic Ramlila Ground in Deoria; Administration Assures Swift Action.

Upendra Bharti | HENB | Deoria, Uttar Pradesh | June 23, 2026: A controversy has erupted in Deoria district over the alleged encroachment of a historic Ramlila ground, with a local Hindu activist threatening self-immolation if the administration fails to remove the unauthorized structures and restore the site for public use.

Vishram Mani Tripathi, a prominent Hindu activist, has issued a stark warning to the district administration, stating that he will be compelled to take the extreme step of self-immolation if immediate action is not taken to clear encroachments from the ancient Ramlila ground located at Kaparwar Tiraha under the Barhaj police station area of Deoria district.

According to Tripathi, the ground, which has traditionally served as the venue for annual Ramlila performances, has gradually been encroached upon over the years through the construction of permanent structures around its premises. As a result, the open space required for staging the religious and cultural event has significantly diminished, leading to the discontinuation of Ramlila performances in recent years.

The issue has become a matter of concern for local residents and devotees who regard the Ramlila ground as an important center of cultural and religious heritage. Many villagers claim that the annual enactment of the Ramayana was once a major community event that attracted large gatherings and fostered social harmony. However, the alleged encroachments have effectively halted these traditional celebrations, causing widespread disappointment among the local population.

Members of several Hindu organizations have repeatedly approached both the tehsil and district administrations, demanding the removal of the encroachments and the restoration of the ground. Despite multiple complaints and representations, activists allege that no concrete action has been taken so far, leading to growing frustration among community members.

Expressing his dissatisfaction with what he described as administrative indifference, Vishram Mani Tripathi stated that the continued inaction has left him with no option but to intensify his protest. He warned that if the encroachments are not removed within a reasonable timeframe, he would resort to self-immolation as a mark of protest against the authorities’ failure to protect a site of religious and cultural significance.

The threat has drawn attention to the longstanding dispute and increased pressure on local officials to address the matter promptly.

Responding to the controversy, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Harishankar Lal assured that the administration is taking the issue seriously. He stated that a revenue department team would soon be constituted to conduct an assessment of the site and initiate the process of removing any unlawful encroachments from the Ramlila ground.

“The matter has come to our notice. A revenue team will be formed shortly, and necessary action will be taken in accordance with the law to clear the encroachments,” the SDM said.

Residents and community leaders have welcomed the administration’s assurance but remain cautious, emphasizing that similar promises in the past have not resulted in tangible action. They have urged authorities to act swiftly so that the historic ground can be restored and traditional Ramlila performances can resume.

As tensions continue to rise, the administration faces the challenge of balancing legal procedures with public sentiment while ensuring that the dispute is resolved peacefully and in accordance with established regulations. The coming weeks are likely to prove crucial in determining whether the promised action materializes and whether the historic Ramlila ground can once again become a center of cultural and religious activity in the region.
