Madhuparna Das | News18.com Online | New Delhi | June 30, 2026:: A very few states across the country present a tougher test for BJP’s Hindutva project than West Bengal. With Muslims accounting for nearly 30 per cent of the population and a political culture shaped by decades of Left-liberal and socialist politics, the state has long resisted overt majoritarian mobilisation. Yet, Suvendu Adhikari, the new chief minister of Bengal, is attempting precisely that.
From pushing for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) to advocating an anti-Love-Jihad law, cracking down on illegal religious conversions and animal slaughter, and rolling back OBC reservations extended to several Muslim communities, Adhikari has unveiled an unmistakable ideological blueprint over the past month.
Bengal is not any other state that has UCC or is on its way to implement UCC. Bengal is not Uttarakhand or Gujarat and not even like Assam, even though Assam has a larger Muslim population. It is about society. So, Adhikari’s objective goes far beyond just governance; instead, it seeks to redefine Bengal’s political identity.
These are not isolated policy proposals. It has a pattern and a design. Together, they represent an attempt to replace Bengal’s traditional politics of class, welfare and secularism with one centred on religious identity, demographic anxiety and Hindu consolidation.
The sharpest flashpoints may include the implementation of UCC and OBC reservations. Through amendments to the state’s backward classes framework, the government has moved to remove several Muslim communities from the OBC list while significantly reducing the overall OBC quota. The BJP argues the previous system amounted to unconstitutional minority appeasement that deprived deserving Hindu backward classes of reservation benefits and the amendment duly followed the Calcutta HC directive.
For Adhikari, the move is as much political as administrative. It creates a narrative of historical correction while simultaneously weakening the minority-backed electoral coalition that powered successive Left Front and Trinamool Congress governments for decades.
The same political logic runs through proposals for the proposed UCC bill, anti-Love Jihad legislation and stricter action against illegal conversions and illegal animal slaughter. Each issue reinforces the BJP’s attempt to shift Bengal’s electoral conversation away from welfare politics towards questions of identity and civilisational assertion.
For decades, Bengal remained an exception to India’s larger political shift. The Left sustained power through class and land politics, Socialist-Communist ideas along with a strong cadre structure, while the Trinamool Congress blended appeasement-welfare with secular populism. Religious polarisation rarely became the defining axis of governance, though politically it was there.
Adhikari is seeking to overturn that decades-old societal pyramid.
