Sankirtan Das | HENB | Kolkata | Oct 10, 2026:: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has given CPM leader Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya 24 hours to delete or amend a social media post in which he blamed “Hindutva supporters” for an attack on his residence. Adhikari warned that legal action would follow if the post was not removed or corrected within the deadline.
Speaking to reporters, Adhikari criticised Bhattacharya for blaming Hindutva supporters before the people responsible for the attack had been identified. He said the CPM leader had insulted the entire Hindu community by making such an allegation without conclusive evidence.
“Police have already arrested a suspect based on a specific complaint. We will not tolerate any attempt to disturb law and order. A thorough investigation into the incident will be conducted. Under these circumstances, how can he write on social media that Hindutva activists carried out the attack?” Adhikari asked.
Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya alleged that a group of masked men arrived on motorcycles at around 5 am on Thursday and threw liquor bottles at his residence in Kalikapur, near Kolkata’s EM Bypass. He claimed that the attackers damaged windowpanes and a CCTV camera.
In a Facebook post, Bhattacharya wrote that “Hindutva hooligans attacked my house” and claimed that his domestic workers had narrowly escaped harm. He also lodged a complaint with the police.
Two FIRs have reportedly been registered against Bhattacharya at the Topsia and Garfa police stations over allegations that his social media statements could disturb communal harmony.
Available video footage of the incident reportedly shows a lone attacker arriving on a motorcycle and hurling a hard object at the house, breaking its glass windowpanes. The audio accompanying the footage also appears to capture the attacker using abusive language directed at CPM leader Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya. The individual’s face was concealed by a mask.

Although the attacker’s identity has not been established in the available footage, the apparent involvement of a lone individual has prompted questions about the basis for Bhattacharya’s immediate allegation against Hindutva supporters.
Several social media users criticised the CPM leader for attributing the attack to Hindutva activists before the investigation had established the identity or motive of the assailant. They described the allegation as premature, irresponsible and politically motivated.
The identity of the attacker, the motive behind the incident and the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault remain matters for the police investigation to establish.
