Hridya Bharti | HENB | Panaji | Oct 15, 2026:: The Goa unit of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) said on Thursday that it did not support any statement, slogan, or action that hurt or disrespected religious beliefs or sentiments. The clarification followed criticism over an anti-Hindutva slogan allegedly raised during the party’s protest in Panaji, news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.
The statement came after Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant warned of stringent legal action against those who allegedly shouted “Hindutva Murdabad” during the party’s October 11 protest.
The controversy erupted after a video, purportedly showing demonstrators shouting “Hindutva Murdabad (Hinduvad Murdabad)” during Sunday’s protest, began circulating on social media. The demonstration was organised to demand the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Authorities prevented the protesters from entering Azad Maidan, and police detained seven people during the incident.
“We would also like to make our position absolutely clear. CJP respects all religions, castes, and communities. We do not endorse or support any statements, slogans, or actions that hurt or disrespect anyone’s religious beliefs or sentiments,” the CJP’s Goa unit said in a statement posted on Instagram, according to PTI.
The party maintained that the October 11 gathering was intended solely to demand Kumar’s resignation and raise public awareness about electoral integrity and the revision process.
“Our objective is clear and unwavering: to restore public trust in the Election Commission and uphold the integrity, transparency, and fairness of the electoral process. Our concerns are institutional and democratic, not religious or communal,” the statement said.
The CJP appealed to citizens not to associate its campaign for electoral accountability with statements or slogans that “go against our principles”. It added, “CJP Goa remains committed to constitutional values, democratic accountability, and electoral integrity.”
Referring to the circulating video, Sawant said on Wednesday that attempts were being made to create communal discord. “I have seen the social media post (video of the event). I have asked them (police) to conduct an investigation. The required legal action would be taken against them (CJP members),” he said, as reported by PTI.
The CJP reiterated that its protest focused on electoral accountability and distanced itself from slogans that could hurt religious sentiments. Meanwhile, the chief minister said the police would investigate the incident and take appropriate legal action.
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Tanavade also questioned the alleged slogans, arguing that the demonstration was intended to focus on electoral roll revision. He maintained that the protesters should have confined their demands to the SIR issue and alleged that certain individuals were attempting to provoke unrest. Tanavade also questioned why some protesters had covered their faces.
The BJP subsequently turned its attention to Congress leaders Sunil Kawthankar and Amit Palekar, seeking clarification on their positions regarding the alleged slogans. BJP Goa social media cell chief Shubham Parsekar referred to their earlier support for activist Amreen Shaikh after she was detained during the CJP agitation. He questioned whether the Congress leaders would respond to the latest controversy in the same manner.
In a separate statement, BJP Goa state media convenor Siddesh Shripad Naik accused Congress leaders of applying different standards depending on the political circumstances. He called on Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Girish Chodankar and other state Congress leaders to clarify their positions, insisting that religious sentiments should be treated consistently.
Kawthankar, meanwhile, condemned the reported slogans against Hindutva and called for stringent action against those found responsible for raising them.
Bailancho Ekvott convenor Auda Viegas said that although the protest might have been organised to pursue a particular cause, the slogan in question was inappropriate. She added that the authorities should act in accordance with the law if allegations of anti-national or anti-religious slogans were established.
Separately, the Bajrang Dal lodged a complaint against Amreen Shaikh at Curchorem Police Station over alleged derogatory remarks about Hindus during the CJP protest. Members of the organisation also burned an effigy of Shaikh near Curchorem Circle.
The controversy has brought the alleged anti-Hindutva slogans into the wider political debate in Goa, with the CJP distancing itself from the remarks, the chief minister warning of legal action following an investigation, and BJP leaders demanding clarifications from Congress representatives. The allegations and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain subject to investigation.
