Express News Service | Tirupati | December 21, 2013:: The construction of an Islamic University at Tondavada, 10 km from the temple town, is snowballing into a major controversy with Hindu religious leaders upping the ante and demanding its demolition.
Speaking at a well-attended public meeting, Hindu Garjana, at the TUDA grounds here Friday, several seers and pontiffs of various mutts slammed the State government for giving its nod to the university. The women’s university, which has 325 students, was originally supposed to be a G+1 building. However, six floors have been constructed.
The Hindu religious leaders demanded that it be shifted from its present location and alleged that it was a “deliberate attempt at destabilising social harmony” in Tirupati. A security cordon was thrown around the TUDA grounds where the meeting, attended by thousands, was organised by the Tirumala Tirupati Pavitrata Parirakshana Samiti and also at the Islamic University. Tension prevailed in the town prior to the meeting with the authorities refusing to give it permission till the last minute and the Samiti threatening to besiege the university.
Addressing the gathering, Visakha Sarada Peetam Pontiff Swaroopanandendra Saraswathi said, “The blind government officials, who permitted construction of the Islamic University unmindful of the risk involved, are now imposing curbs on us.” Citing the recent arrest of terrorists in Puttur and their aborted plan to target Srivari Brahmotsavams, he wondered how could the government let an Islamic University come up near Tirupati.
Demanding that the government cancel permission given to the University, he said they will continue the stir till it was demolished.
Express News Service | Tirupati| December 21, 2013:: The ‘Hindu Garjana’ organised in the temple town put the police on tenterhooks for some time. Heavy police bandobust was seen at the TUDA grounds where the meeting was held and also at the Islamic University at Tondavada against which the Hindu outfits held the protest.
The Tirumala Tirupati Pavitrata Samrakshana Vedika (TTPSV), which proposed the meeting, was denied permission by the authorities concerned. With this, Vedika leaders threatened to besiege the University, if they were denied permission to hold the meeting at TUDA grounds.
However, as tension started to build up, the authorities gave permission at the last minute but did not take any chances and put tight security at the university.
All the lanes leading to the Islamic University at Tondavada, more than 10 kilometres from Tirupati, were barricaded and policemen deployed there. They did not allow anyone to go near the premises.
Policemen kept guard even in bushes and small bylanes that lead to the university premises to prevent anyone reaching there.
Armed police and special parties were also deployed aniticpating trouble.
At TUDA grounds too, police and paramilitary forces were deployed around the premises to prevent any attempt to take out a rally or the activists to proceed towards the university.
Police heaved a sigh of relief after the meeting passed off peacefully and the activists left the place.
Violation of Norms – The Hindu: Presiding over the meet, Saiva Kshetra Peetadhipathi Siva Swamiji said a six-storey structure had been built in the ‘Pushkarini’ (tank) of the dilapidated temple of Thimmappa (as Kannadigas know Lord Venkateswara), in violation of building and urban development norms.
Swaroopanandendra Saraswathi, pontiff of the Sarada Peetham in Visakhapatnam, said seers had to take up the issue as political leaders had failed to address it.
He saw a looming security threat to the shrine in Tirumala. “Hindu temples enjoyed better patronage during the British rule.”
He said a Srivari Dandu (Lord’s army) would be formed to remove the structure.
Hindu Temples Protection Movement founder Kamalananda Bharathi saw a pattern in the periodic attempts by politicians to divide Hindus and Muslims.
“Hindus visit dargahs in Kadapa and Kasumur and participate in Rottela Panduga in Nellore, while many Muslims visit Tirumala. But the politicians are playing mischief.”
Vedika vice-president Srinivasananda, secretary Gouraiah, treasurer Chetan Janardhan, national secretary Ramesh Shinde and spokesperson A. Krishna Kishore took part in the event.
From the source of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti: Hindu Garjana Sabha was held on Indira Ground, Opp. TUDA office, Tirupati on 20th December Friday. Muslims circled the Tirupati’s SP office on 19th December demanding to stop the Sabha. Till 19th December evening Tirupati Police and TUDA did not give permission for the Sabha. TUDA authorities had even locked the gate of the Indira Ground on 20th December morning till 7 AM.
The TUDA was saying that our Hindu Garjana Sabha is illegal, but they should first answer if the Islamic University is illegal or not? Hindus from North India were asking whether they should come to this Sabha, but we told them that Hindus from Andhra Pradesh are strong enough to stop this University. Through this sabha, we warn the government that Tirupati is ours and we will not let Tirupati become another Ayodhya.
HJS Andhra Pradesh Spokesperson Shri Chetan Janardan called the Hindus to tighten the protest after this Garjana Sabha. He ensured that TTPSV will continue its protest till the Islamic University demolished.
Shri Kamalananda Swamiji, Hindu Makkal Kachhi founder Shri. Arjun Sampat, Hindu Dharma Raksha Samiti president Shri. Chedaluri Gaurayya, Activist Shri. Aakula Krishna Kishore, Hindu Leader Shri. Jayachandra Hindu and various state seers were present in this sabha.
