HENB | Rishikesh | Sept 23, 2015:: The Spiritual Guru of many and Iconic Vedantic Seer, Swami Dayanand, who was battling kidney failure and a host of related ailments, passed away at his Rishikesh ashram at on Wednesday night at Sheeshamjhadi area about 10-20 pm. Swamiji was 87.
Swami Dayanand breathed his last tonight, said his close aide and trustee of Dayanand Ashram, Shantatmanand Saraswati.
He had been brought back to the ashram earlier today after 10 days of treatment at the Jollygrant Himalayan Hospital, where his condition had begun to decline steadily, he said. The spiritual guru had been ailing for a long time.
On September 11, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had paid a visit to Swami Dayanand at his ashram to enquire after his health. PM Modi reveres Swami Dayananda as a Master in his spiritual life.
Swamiji was a teacher of Vedanta and Sanskrit in the tradition of Shankar. He was a legend in spiritual discourses over the hours.
Dayananda Saraswati Ashram network has more than 100 centres in India and abroad with major ashrams at Rishikesh, Coimbatore and Nagpur.
Swami Dayanand established All India Movement For Seva in 2000. He has been awarded by United Nations in 2005.
Swamiji was a strong proponent of Hindutva movement based upon character building and awakening of Dharma as the pillars of everything.
Swamiji’s close association with both RSS and VHP usually irked the secular section of people very frequently. Swami Dayananda Saraswati set up the unique Acharya Sabha, bringing pontiffs from all over the country on a common platform to take up the cause of Hinduism and debate the challenges on it. He was also an utter opponent of proselytisation, calling ‘religious conversion as assault on faith’ and criticized both the Islamic and Christian conversionists.
