Kamal Krishna Patel | HENB | London | Oct 1, 20916:: After a massive success of US Congressman Ted Poe’s initiation through an online petition to declare Pakistan a Terror State, now a petition asking the UK government to “strongly condemn Pakistan for providing safe haven for terrorists” has received 5015 signatures. And that number is climbing almost by the second in a rocket speed.
In the UK, petitions like this one receive a response from the government if they get 10,000 signatures. As many as 100,000 signatures, and UK law requires that they be considered for a Parliamentary debate.
Only British citizens or UK residents have the right to sign. See Present status here.
The petition calls out Pakistan on its “double-speak on (the) issue of terrorism.” It accuses Pakistan of harbouring UN-designated terrorist networks, and providing help to “enemies of the international coalition…against terrorism.” It cites former al-Qaida chief Osama Bin Laden’s hideout in the country as an example.
Senior officers in the Pakistan Army and its intelligence agency – the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) – are said to be in cahoots with several “militant and criminal groups,” the petition says. It adds that ISI is accused of “playing a role in major terrorist attacks across the world including the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States, terrorism in Kashmir, (the attack on) Indian Parliament….and (the) Mumbai terror attacks.”
A day after the Uri attack, the UK’s Foreign Minister rang External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to tell her that the UK stood shoulder-to shoulder with India in defeating terrorism.
And on September 21, a Indian-American petition asking the Obama Administration to declare Pakistan a ‘State Sponsor of Terrorism.’ The Petion came under a caption, “We the People ask the Administration to declare Pakistan, State Sponsor of Terrorism (H.R.6069)”. The White House has 60 days to respond to a petition once it gets 100,000 signatures in 30 days. The Indian-American appeal crossed that threshold less than a week after it was made. The goal of 100,000 signature reached a tremendous response of 460,818 signature within stipulated time.
It is apprehended that the peace loving citizens of UK and all Indian roots in UK are overwhelmingly participating the present online petition campaign against Pak Terrorism aiming an redressal in UK Parliament. The trend in the campaign shows clearly that UK government will have respond to this petition and it is likely steeping to a debate in the UK parliament too.
