Srinath Jena | HENB | Puri | April 19, 2017:: Amidst a protest of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) members and a group of Bajrangdal activists, an anxious CM WB Mamata Banerjee offered prayers to Lord Jagannath far from sanctum sanctorum by an arrangement of Jagannath Swain Mohapatra Daitapati, the proclaimed “Badagrahi” who was suspended and reinstated+ within some days by the Lord Jagannath Temple administration in June, 2015. Incidentally, this Jagannath Mohapartra is the family priest of Banerjee for Jagannath worship at her Kalighat home, as claimed by Mamata.
A section of priests led by Somnath Khuntia opposed the entry of Mamata Banerjee for her open support for beef eating and cow slaughter. Somnath and other three priest were detained by temple police on Tuesday. Mamata visited the temple on Wednesday evening.
Banerjee reached at the temple’s lion gate at 5.45 pm. She entered the temple with tight security, the Daitapati group and the temple administration and spent about 45 minutes in the temple and visited some temple in the Jagannath Temple complex.
Khuntia had claimed that servitors are annoyed with Mamata for allegedly supporting consumption of beef, which is against Indian culture and traditions.
While contacted, Khuntia told HENB, “It was shocking thing that a pro-cow-slaughter and beef propagator woman entered into the Lord’s temple with the help of some priest involved in vested interest. We didn’t want any division within the priest unity. But, indulging Mamata in the Jagannath temple was noting but a big sin. Hindus are shocked for the incident and everybody must pray to lord to forgive the sinner”.
Police said Mamata’s temple visit was peaceful. “We earlier detained four priests. A handful of youth tried to oppose her entry to the temple. We rounded them up and whisked away from the area. They were detained,” SP (Puri) Sarthak Sarangi told TOI.
Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of BJP confirmed they protested during Mamata’s visit. “Our supporters were hurt over her remarks supporting consumption of beef. We cannot tolerate if pro-beef supporters enter the temple,” BJYM’s Puri Town president Saswat Mohapatra told TOI. The protesters raised, “Gohatyakari Mamata Go back ” slogans.
Before visiting the temple, Mamata said BJP is trying to politicize her statement in a recent TV interview. “I had told the channel that people have the choice what to eat and what not. BJP politicised the issue,” Mamata said. Mamata said she has tremendous faith on Lord Jagannath and her family members frequently visit Puri.
Criticizing Mamata’s version BJYM’s Puri Town president Saswat Mohapatra told HENB that we can’t say anything about her faith in Lord Jagannath, but she has not full faith in Indian constitution as she openly contradicts the Art 48 of Indian Constitution where cow-slaughter is prohibited. Whenever Mamata speaks about ‘own choice of food habit’, she obviously mentions ‘beef eating without forgetting’, but she never speaks on ‘pork eating’.
“Mamata Banerjee came to Puri on her way to visit Bhubaneswar jail hospital where two her party leaders (Loksabha MP) are lodged in connection with Rose Valley Scam Case. Her main intention not to pay homage to Lord Jagannath, but to meet Odisha CM Nabin Pattaink to form an anti-BJP political group to challenge PM Modi. She is allowing Jihadi force in WB to attack Hindus where they become minority and now in Puri she is claiming herself as a ‘born Hindu’ in a huge contrast. We just made a symbolic protest to warn Mamata Banerjee to leave her anti-Hindu stand. We condemn her statement depicting ‘BJP as a scar on Hinduism’. She must not forget that BJP is the largest party and won the hearts of majority of Indian people. Unless, Mamata leave her anti-Hindu, anti-BJP stand, she will face a larger protest all over India”, Saswat told HENB.
Some Sevaits (servitor) of Lord Jagannath Temple have planned to meet Govardhana Peeth Shankaracharya Nischanalananda Saraswati to get his views on the matter and directions on how to protect the temple sanctity, if other ‘vidharmi’ (unrighteous) persons try to enter into Lord Jagannath Temple exercising their political powers.
