Srijato Das | HENB | Jalpaiguri | Aug 27, 2017:: According to PTI, two Muslim youths were allegedly lynched by a enraged mob, which dragged them out of a pick-up van carrying cows, at Barhoria village in Jalpaiguri district today, the police said.
Anwar Hussain (19) and Hafizul Sheikh (19) were beaten to death by the mob, which intercepted their vehicle and pulled them out of it in the early hours of Sunday, the police said, adding that the pick-up van was also badly damaged by the mob.
Police took Hussain and Sheikh to the Dhupguri hospital where they were declared brought dead.
The police also took charge of the cattle in the vehicle. A large contingent of police was deployed in the area.
The Hindu mob attacked the persons on a suspicion of being cow thieves who were passing the areas with 7 cows in a small vehicle in early hours in the dawn, a local man told HENB.
According to police sources, the incident took place at between 3 am to 4 am in Dadon 2 village about 15 kms from Dhupguri town. The deceased persons were sent to postmortem.
At first, the enraged mob wanted to check papers for the transportation of cows in border areas. But nobody in the vehicle could produce the papers and they were speaking in a very in-consistence manners which increased the suspicion of the mob.
It was not divulged where the cattle were being taken actually, whether in Cooch Behar, Assam of Bangladesh.
Monideepa Banerjie reports in NDTV, two men – both 19 years old – were beaten to death by a mob at Baruhalia village in north Bengal this morning on the suspicion that they were cow thieves.
Both men have been identified. One of them was from Cooch Behar district, another from Assam’s Dhubri district.
A third man who was driving the van managed to escape from the spot. He turned himself in at the Dhupguri police station where he is being questioned.
The three men were driving through the village around 4 am in a small truck carrying cattle when villagers patrolling at night because of recent cow thefts stopped it.
They took the cows out of the truck, pushed it on its side and almost set fire to it. A mob caught hold of two of the three men and beat them to death on the spot.
“We are trying to track down people actually involved in the lynching. But no one has been arrested yet,” said Jalpaiguri district superintendent of police Amitava Maiti.
This is the second such incident in north Bengal in recent times. In June, three men had been beaten to death in a village at Chopra in the North Dinajpur district.
The killings come just days before Eid al-Adha or Bakri Eid on September 2. Several cow vigilante groups have opposed cow slaughter to mark that occasion.
