Upendra Bharti | HENB | Ranchi | June 26, 2018:: A designated family court in Ranchi granted divorce to national-level shooter Tara Shahdeo on Tuesday from her husband Ranjeet Singh Kohli alias Rakibul Hassan on grounds of cruelty.
In her divorce petition filed in January 2017, Shahdeo alleged that Kohli had married her in July 2014 without informing that he was a Muslim. Post-marriage, he began torturing her to force her into embracing Islam.
The allegations had sparked a controversy with the Union home ministry seeking a report on the purported case of ‘love jihad’. Then CM Hemant Soren later referred the case to the CBI on Shahdeo’s request.
Shahdeo’s lawyer argued that his client was made to believe that Kohli was a Hindu. “However, when she went to her in-law’s house, she found the environment similar to that of a Muslim family. The next day, the family brought a Muslim religious head to the house to solemnize the marriage under Islamic traditions. When she protested, Tara was confined to a house and was subjected to cruelty,” he said.
Principal judge of family court B K Gautam granted a divorce to Shahdeo, saying that evidence revealed that she was subjected to cruelty by Kohli and no one has the right to force any person to change his/her religion.
Tara’s counsel, L C N Shahdeo, said, “We had filed the divorce petition under Sections 12 (1) (c) (seeking annulment of marriage) and 13 (1) (I-A) (inflicting cruelty) of the Hindu Marriage Act. These sections pertain to marrying on giving false information and inflicting cruelty.
Principal Judge (Family Court) Brajesh Kumar Gautam granted divorce after hearing both the sides. It had reserved the judgement on June 4, when Raqibul had presented his arguments. Tara had submitted affidavit running into several pages seeking divorce primarily on the ground that the marriage was conducted on the basis of false information and, subsequently, led to domestic and physical abuse.
Talking to HENB after the verdict, Tara Shahdeo said: “We are looking for justice in the other connected cases, which the CBI has registered+. There is still a long way to go, but I am hoping that I will get justice.” She also said that the annulment of marriage would help to focus on her career in a much better way.
Giving his reaction on the verdict on Tara Shahdeo case, Upananda Brahmachari, the prominent Hindu Interlocutor and Editor of Hindu Existence web portal told HENB, “Muslims have developed the trend of hiding their Islamic identity when commit criminal offences like Love Jihad, Rape Jihad, Forced Marriage and then they flash an identity of Hindu name. In India maximum Hindu girls are the victim of the Muslim boys who take a Hindu name in order to get their success in Love Jihad franchise. Govt. must enact special law to punish those Muslims who make criminal offence by taking Hindu names”.
Many Hindu organisations demanded exemplary punishment to Muslim criminal Rakibul Hassan as he victimized a Hindu Girl, Tara Shahdeo, a champion shooter and sports personality of national fame.
