Entry of non-Hindus in Jagannath temple unacceptable: Govardhan Peeth Shankaracharya, Puri King & Odisha VHP.

Govardhan Peeth Shankaracharya, Puri king, VHP oppose entry of non-Hindus in Jagannath temple.

Avani Dayiatapati | HENB | Puri | July 8, 2018::  Govardhan Peeth Shankaracharya Nischalananda Saraswati and Puri  King Gajapati Dibyasingha Dev, who is considered the first servitor of Lord Jagannath, have expressed opposition to allowing entry of non-Hindus into the Puri temple. A day earlier Supreme Court of India asked the Jagannath Temple Administration to consider if the non-Hindus could be permitted inside the temple sanctum for ‘darshan’.

Presently only Hindus are allowed to enter the 12th-century shrine and the issue relating to allowing entry of non-Hindus is being debated in Odisha after the Supreme Court direction on Thursday that the Shri Jagannath temple management should consider allowing all visitors, irrespective of their faith to offer prayers to the deities.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad too has strongly opposed the entry of people of non-Hindus into the 12th-century shrine and said it would file a review petition in the Supreme Court to reconsider its proposal on this.

Entry to all into Sri Mandir violating the age-old tradition of Sanatan religion is not acceptable to us, Shankaracharya Swami Nischalananda Saraswati of Govardhan Peeth, one of the four cardinal mutts, said in a release.

The Shankaracharya of Govardhan Peeth is the chief of Mukti Mandap, the apex body of pandits, inside Shri Jagannath Temple.

Gajapati King Dibyasingha Deb said the dieties – Lord Jagannath, Balaram and Subhadra are taken out the temple every year during the Rath Yatra to bless devotees of different religions and lakhs of people also get to see the them during the ‘Snan Ustav’ (bathing festival).

The Supreme Court’s proposal is like an interim order, the Gajapati King said adding the temple management committee will deliberate on the issue after the Rath Yatra and the Shri Jagannath Temple Administration will take steps accordingly.

He said when there is a question relating to religion, particularly the Sanatan Dharma and issues relating to Sri Mandir, Govardhan Peeth Shankaracharya’s decision is considered to be final and even the court will accept it.

Asked about the proposal of allowing non-Hindus into the shrine, Deb said: “For the sake of argument let me say that if the Shankaracharya says that there is no problem in allowing entry of people of all faith into the temple, then also the government has to consider several times keeping in mind the security of the shrine.”

“Can the government provide total security to temple when the entire globe is facing the threat of terrorism?” he asked and wondered about the necessity to bring such a change in tradition.

“The impact and consequences (of allowing non-Hindus) should also be considered seriously. One has to be very careful before taking any decision in this regard,” he said.

The Supreme Court should take the views of servitors, government and above all devotees before taking any final decision on the matter, he added.

The VHP state working president Badrinath Patnaik told PTI that the Gajapati King and Shankaracharya Nischalananda Saraswati should be consulted before taking any step with regard to the temple.

He also opposed the apex court’s proposal of abolishing the hereditary servitor tradition in the Shree Jagannath temple.

Patnaik said: “The state government will be urged to maintain its existing stand failing which we will file a review petition in a higher bench of the Supreme Court.”

Odisha Law Minister Pratap Jena said the state government is yet to receive the Supreme Court order.

On the entry of non-Hindus into the Jagannath temple, Jena said this is a “proposal” given by the apex court. The state government will take its decision after a unanimous conclusion is arrived at on the issue.

“We will examine the content of the order after getting a copy of it. The state government will take a decision after the apex court gives the final verdict,” he said.

Stating that the state government is keen on reforms in the Jagannath temple, Jena said that if necessary the government will amend the Jagannath Temple Act, 1954.

Senior BJP leader Bijay Mohapatra told a press conference here that stopping the servitors’ hereditary practice is difficult and if done, would create chaos.

Earlier, the Puri district judge had suggested to the Supreme Court to stop the hereditary services of the Jagannath temple servitors.

Stating that the hereditary service of the servitors is clearly mentioned in section 15 clause 1 of Shri Jagannath Temple Act, 1952, he wondered why the advocate general, who was representing the state government at the time of the submission of the report by the Puri district judge, did not oppose the recommendation of the apex court on the matter.

Mohapatra said there should be no comparison of Shree Jagannath temple with other temples. The Puri temple is an unique shrine because the servitors perform at least 120 rituals of the deities.

He suggested the Gajapati King, the Shankaracharya, the state chief secretary, law secretary and the advocate general should discuss the matter and take a final decision.

Puri Gajapati King told HENB, “the matter as asked by Hon’ble Supreme Court of India will be discussed elaborately and finalized after the ensuing Ratha Yatra (the chariot festival of Puri) is over. In the Ratha Yatra festival, Lord Jagannath with his elder bother Balabhadra and sister Subhdra will come to the streets for mingling with their devotees. So, there will be be no problem for anybody to meet the Lord of Universe from a very closer range”.

Upananda Brahmachari, the eminent Hindu interlocutor and Editor of Hindu Existence Website expressed his pleasure for taking a prompt action for the Jagannath Temple entry case by the Govardhan Peeth Shankaracharya, Puri Gajapati King and the Odisha unit of VHP.

“Hindus are the most law abiding people in India and the real protector of democratic system of the country. But, that does not mean the existing laws and system will be applied for demoralizing the Hindu people violating their tradition and sentiments”, Brahmachari told HENB.
