ET Online | Mumbai | Sept 6, 2019:: On Friday, began trending on Twitter with the hashtag #BanNetFlixInIndia doing the rounds.
The streaming platform ran into trouble when a member of the Shiv Sena, on Wednesday, filed a complaint against it for ‘defaming Hindus, India and the army’. Ramesh Solanki, whose Twitter bio describes him as ‘a very proud Hindu nationalist, Mumbai Secretary/Gujarat Sampark Pramukh BVS.YuvaSena/ShivSena IT Cell Core Committee’, took to the micro-blogging site to share a copy of his complaint.
The document names shows like ‘Sacred Games’, ‘Laila’ and ‘Ghoul’, along with comedian Hasan Minhaj’s ‘Patriot Act’ for showing ‘Hindus and India in bad light’.
“Filed complaint against @NetflixIndia for defaming Hindus, India and @adgpi. Almost every series is serious attempt to paint Hindus and India in bad light,” Solanki tweeted+.
The complaint, filed at Mumbai’s LT Marg police station, read, “Almost every series on Netflix India is with the intention to defame the country on a global level. It is with deep-rooted Hinduphobia that the platform is portraying the nation in a bad light.”
Solanki urged the police to “take necessary legal action” against Netflix for “hurting Hindu sentiments.”
Two days after the complaint, with the hashtag #BanNetFlixInIndia trending, Solanki once again took to the platform to tweet,”Enough is Enough. Its hightime we Hindus unite and tell everyone that HINDUS are not doormat that any Tom Dick Harry can just walk over. If you want our money if you want our subscription, stop disrespecting us@ippatel @ShefVaidya @KapilMishra_IND @TajinderBagga #BanNetFlixInIndia.”
