Upendra Bharti | HENB | May 1, 2026:: The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has said that the formation of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in West Bengal would be “important” and could work in the interest of Hindus while addressing key concerns such as internal security and demographic changes.
The poll for the West Bengal Assembly Election 2026 was completed on April 23 and April 29, and the results are scheduled to be declared on May 4. It is difficult to say who will win, as it is a very close contest, with TMC and BJP locked in a tight race and the BJP holding a slight edge.
Addressing a press conference in Shimla, VHP Central Organising General Secretary Milind Parande said that a change in governance could significantly influence policy direction, even if immediate resolution of all issues may not be possible.
“If the BJP government is formed in West Bengal, that would be important,” Parande stated, adding that governance aligned with “national and cultural interests” could gradually address long-standing challenges.
Parande alleged that demographic changes have already taken place in West Bengal, complicating the socio-political landscape. He linked this to concerns over illegal immigration, particularly along the India–Bangladesh border, which he described as a major internal security challenge.
He asserted that illegal entrants should not be allowed to influence India’s political processes or access public resources, emphasizing that the issue has implications beyond West Bengal and affects national security as a whole.
The remarks come amid the ongoing political discourse during the 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, where issues such as migration, identity, and border security have remained central to campaign narratives.
Raising the issue of religious institutions, Parande reiterated the VHP’s demand that Hindu temples be freed from government control. He argued that, unlike other religious places of worship, Hindu temples continue to be administered by the state, which he termed discriminatory.
“It is neither the job of courts nor governments to manage temples. They should be run autonomously,” he said.
He revealed that the VHP has prepared a draft law through a think tank comprising religious leaders, retired High Court chief justices, Supreme Court lawyers, and legal experts. The proposal envisions autonomous temple trusts without political appointments, inclusive representation—including women—and utilisation of funds for social service and promotion of Hindu traditions.
Parande also called for structured mechanisms to resolve disputes related to temple administration. He suggested the formation of advisory bodies at state and district levels consisting of experts in finance, management, law, and religious practices to ensure transparent and efficient governance.
Referring to Himachal Pradesh as “Devbhoomi,” the VHP leader stressed the need for stricter implementation of anti-conversion laws. He said that while legal provisions exist, enforcement remains weak and requires strengthening, including enhanced powers for law enforcement agencies.
He further raised concerns about what he described as organised religious conversions and called for stronger legal and administrative measures to curb such activities.
Parande concluded by stating that political leadership must prioritise “national and cultural interests.” He acknowledged that while a change in government may not yield immediate results, it can significantly shape long-term policy direction and governance outcomes.
The VHP’s remarks add to the broader political debate surrounding governance, identity, and security issues in West Bengal as the state awaits the counting of votes in the high-stakes assembly elections.
